With most of Prince's long version songs, they only played them on the radio during late night because Prince was raw and the stations couldn't risk being fined by FCC. This is when they would play the entire album.
Listen, I couldn't even buy a Prince album until high school and that was Purple Rain. His stuff was then was considered kinda near X-rated back then.
I had the famous poster of Prince in the shower wearing some bikini trunks. I had to hide it inside my closet cuz Chile.....
Prince came out in 1979 and he was Mr Controversy. He rarely gave interviews. He and the band dressed scandalously...wearing them pumps and it was the big thing about whether he was gay or not. He kept folks guessing and gagging. Musically he was WAY ahead of his time. Of course, years later, he made it obvious that he loved the womenz.
His music lyrics was always so simplistic yet layered and complex all at the same time. Hidden meanings and everything.
The stuff that's in his vault, we may never know just the depths of his music...that's a travesty.

***PRINCE TRIVIA TIME!!! *** ...it could cause controverseeeeee...... (8:37)....
    - ...Prince became the Talk O' the Town with this tune; It was his first #1, ANYWHERE (#1 Dance for SIX WEEKS, Dec. 1981), and, one of the first instances where someone's sexuality was questioned on a "Pop" hit in the 80's ("Johnny Are You Queer", came in 1982)....
    - Prince didn't HELP with the G-y rumors, by releasing a pull-out "Poster" of himself, in the Album cover jacket....In a shower, WET, wearing a black bikini brief, gold chain waist, makeup & a CROSS on the bathroom tile..... Google IS your friend.....
...The "Controversy" LP wanted to do JUST that....with titles like, "Sexuality", "Do Me Baby", Annie Christian", "Ronnie, Talk To Russia", and, ummm.... "Jack U Off", he showed us he WANTED to be talked about.... (4:31)...
    - ....Then, after this Album, he gave us "1999"....ba-BOOOOOM.....

"Controversy" was the lead single to Prince's 1981 album of the same name. It was a big hit on the dance charts. The "controversy" over Prince makes little sense today but social mores were different back then and Prince hit the scene right as the mainstream backlash to the sixties counterculture began to hit its stride. What sets the song a cut above for me is the hook in the chorus. "Do you get high? Does your daddy cry? -- Do I believe in God? Do I believe in me? (Yeah, ooh yeah) \ Some people wanna die so they can be free \ I said life is just a game, we're all just the same (Do you wanna play?)"

I got to see see him live 6 times... AMAZING. 97-2004 4 times very close. He gave me a 'five' (well sorta: he was touching some girls' hands and I reached over... he gave me a look and touched my hand... (Later he knocked a mic stand over and it almost hit a security guy but I caught it and shoved it back up to Prince. At another show(at a small club) he was walking in and there was a white chain blocking his way and I moved it out of the way and he said "thank you."

Great reaction Empress! I have never heard this extended version before with the Lords Prayer and the little rap towards the end and that abrupt ending. That’s one of the issues growing up in the age of the music video and also being really young when this song came out, I sometimes didn’t get the full context of the song as they edited them down for MTV. Also I was probably so mesmerized by Prince in this video and the funkiness of the song that I could have missed some of the details you caught just by listening to the song lol! I do remember people used to question Prince’s sexuality and maybe his ethnicity although not sure. I was drawn to him as a brilliant artist so all of that was trivial of course. So glad I got to see him live before he passed away may he RIP.

@@dalee72 I actually saw him in Chicago at the United Center in 2012. He played 3 or 4 nights if I am remembering correctly and the first show was plagued by some technical glitches but I saw him the 2nd or 3rd night and the show was flawless! Janelle Monae was his special guest on that night and she performed a song or 2 with him (I believe Jennifer Hudson was his special guest the first night). He also did 4 or 5 encores so people kept having to run back into the arena because they kept thinking the show was over 😂. I don’t think his band even knew when he was going stop because they kind of stuck around a little bit at the end looking a bit confused and then finally left the stage. That was our cue that he was done lol! It was an amazing show!

This song was thier first single of the ''Controversy'' album. It's not one of his most know albums and the same thing with this single. He gained recognition with the years by fans after started became a successful career in the 80's. He was at his fourth album when he recording and wrote this album. It's was his third US entry and it's was only a club hit back in 1981. But this song and the album open the door of the success he arrived with the next album and the impact he give during the 80's after the ''1999'' album.

Before Prince there was Little Richard who was influenced by Esquerita (born Eskew Reeder, Jr. in 1935 or 1938, in S. Carolina) who I inadvertently discovered a couple-a-days ago!!! All were a disruption to the nervous centers of the adults of their day!!! Lol

    JAMM!
This was 1980. You gotta imagine Prince walking onstage in high heels, makeup, jockstrap, and a trenchcoat singing in a high falsetto, when movies at the time like, "Rambo" and "The Terminator" were dictating male culture. Plus, like Sly & the Family Stone, he purposely put together a mixed-race band. This was one of his "tamer" songs, unlike his previous funk bombs, like "Dirty Mind" and "Head." 🤩

I’m so glad you had the album version of this song. Most of Prince’s songs that were released as singles turned out to be only the tip of a very deep iceberg when you find the album each song is from and listen to it. So much is cut off on the singles that you hear on the radio. Any song of his that you’ve heard, if you find it on the album, you will hear so much more than you’ve ever heard before.

Prince had the idea for this song because his previous album (Dirty Mind) was radically different from his two albums at the beginning of his career and induced some rejection, both due to the fact the music was influenced by British punk and new wave (hence his "Rude Boy" badge on his coat, a reference to The Clash eponymous film) and the very explicit lyrics (especially "Head" and "Sister"). He also remembered what Owen Husney (his first manager) told him : "Controversy is press", that also why both sides of his album cover used its song titles like a newspaper headline.

I think that he was considered controversial during those times. I think he would still be considered controversial nowadays with this song because Americans find any lay person using religion in their art controversial.
I think that it's OK and good to be controversial for the right reasons. A coworker friend thinks that Madonna was being unnecessarily controversial with her Like a Prayer music video but I thought it was good of her to have done it the way she did. Controversy makes people think and question their values and beliefs about certain things.
