I once dated someone who couldn't understand how anyone could watch "such a miserably depressing movie" as "Dancer in the Dark". "Pointless" is how they described it.
We didn't date much longer after that.
I realized that someone who cannot understand the extraordinary beauty found in Selma's sacrifice really can't understand love.
If they see the ending as a senseless tragedy rather than a selfless triumph then there must not be anyone in their lives they care about more than themselves.

    • @Snarl616
      @Snarl616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Well I find this movie very good (the only good one from Von Trier), but there is actually something very pointless: Selma is a beautiful and heroic character so it's natural to be by her side, but let's face it: the cold reality is that she ruined her life by herself. She committed the homicide after a mistake she made, she has a guy that likes her and that could avoid bad future for Selma and her son, but she disregards him, she played a contradictory crazy role in the court like she was nasty and insane.
I repeat: Selma is a beautiful character, but what is the point of her character, except Von Trier uselessly messing with female protagonists and destroying them (like in basically all of his movies)?

@@Snarl616 i understand your point but Selma did this things not because she was being mean or dumb, she didn’t want to date Jeff because she was too busy working to afford his son’s operation, and anything that she could have said in court could have been used against her, she had everything to loose from more innocent she was, I mean an immigrant women from a communist country in the 60’s kills a cop “one of Americas defenders” was like having Satan sitting in court, she was actually very smart in those aspects

    • @lucy-ep6cl
      @lucy-ep6cl ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Snarl616how is having a guy liking her could save her future? lets say they both could ve afforded her sons surgery but isnt it unfair for him if she married him when she knows so well shes becomimg blind? she could not drag him into her misery and lets say some stuff are indeed "pointless" (I totally think theres nothing pointless) isnt it lame and useless for the movie to have a happy ending? its a realistic movie that describes cruel reality and how a beautiful and an innocent soul thats in the same time isnt so innocent could get that much damage and hate from society and the world in general

    • @Snarl616
      @Snarl616 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@lucy-ep6cl You all Von Trier's fans seem to talk with emphasis about things you really know not so much about or don't really get. She kills a cop after a mistake she did, and her character is so written with no depth that in court she acts and behaves totally different, but yeah poor lady: she gets the evil because she's (and I quote from you) "innocent soul thats in the same time isnt so innocent". She killed a cop, but she gets damage and hate so that's ok, right?

    • @bigtony1434
      @bigtony1434 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Snarl616 She’s naive and desperate - that’s why she kills the cop after he begs her to. Then later during the court scenes, her perception of reality is so turned around that she’s too confused to answer any of the questions properly and doesn’t understand that she’s incriminating herself. She’s a hopelessly naive foreigner with poor vision, of course she’s not going to be able to manage herself in court that well.
Your point that she was wrong for not marrying Jeff after finding out he liked her is also insane. She wasn’t comfortable being married, it’s not fair to say she should’ve forced herself into a situation like that.

Not getting at least one alternate demo on a collection album was such a huge disservice to Peter Stormare. Sure, he’s not an accomplished singer, but the sentiment of his performance here is still effective!

i haven't seen this movie since high school; i rented it from the library bcus i love Bjork and put it on while i was folding laundry. the end started happening and i had to sit the fuck down and i just remember bawling. like vocal, making sound bawling. no other movie has ever done that to me. bjork's ability to act really shines at the end. i couldn't believe how talented and raw she is.

    • @malkinmalone

I graduated in 2001 and remember watching this around that time as well. It is so interesting to look back at that time now. All the good things in movies and music were sort of underground. By that time the popular music and movies were so awful that they really pushed our generation away. I mean the radio was playing Limp Bizkit and britney spears at that point. No 17 year old with half a brain is going to listen to that. At least we had people like bjork and thom yorke that weren’t too difficult to find if you looked around a little.

    I've seen it all
    I have seen the trees
I have seen the willow leaves
    Dancing in the breeze
    I've seen a man killed
    By his best friend,
    And lives that were over
    Before they were spent.
    I've seen what I was
And I know what I'll be
    I've seen it all
There is no more to see
    You haven't seen elephants
    Kings or Peru
    I'm happy to say
    I had better to do
    What about China?
Have you seen the Great Wall?
    All walls are great
    If the roof doesn't fall
And the man you will marry
    The home you will share
    To be honest
    I really don't care
    [gibberish]
    You've never been
    To Niagara Falls
    I have seen water
    It's water, that's all
    The Eiffel Tower
    The Empire State
    My pulse was as high
    On my very first date
    And your grandson's hand
As he plays with your hair
    To be honest
    I really don't care
    [gibberish]
    I've seen it all
    I've seen the dark
    I've seen the brightness
    In one little spark
    I've seen what I chose
And I've seen what I need
    And that is enough
To want more would be greed
    I've seen what I was
And I know what I'll be
    I've seen it all
There is no more to see
    You've seen it all
    And all you have seen
    You can always review on
    Your own little screen
    The light and the dark
    The big and the small
    Just keep in mind
You need no more at all
    You've seen what you were
    And know what you'll be
    You've seen it all
There is no more to see
    [gibberish]

Yes indeed a masterpiece... Breaking the waves was also a massive blow for me but Dancer in the dark is unique. I liked also Catherine Deneuve acting in this mouvie a good trjbute to Les parapluies de Cherbourg or Les demoiselles de Rochefort. I know that it is coming from far but i've found that the final scene of the Teheran Law is a least as vibrant as the one in this mouvie.😢

It's a shame that Björk spoke so negatively about von Trier. Of course, only after the film won the Palme d'Or in Cannes.
