June 11, 2018 | Sidney Madden -- It's a good thing the weather was gloomy the day Jorja Smith rolled in for her Tiny Desk concert. Even though the skies threatened rain and thunder, the overcast light lingering in our dimmed office space allowed the teardrop pendant lights, hung from the ceiling by her lighting team, to cast the desk in a warm, honey-hued glow. And while the nimble guitar strings and double-time drums of her supporting band was enough to dizzy the focus in the room, it was the U.K. singer's slow, silky cadence that anchored the performance in tranquility.
As Smith worked her way up the scales to each high note in "On My Mind" (a track usually sung over a reverberated garage beat) and "Teenage Fantasy" (a ballad to love lost written when she was 16), there wasn't an ounce of pressure evident in her face or body language. When she closed her eyes to deliver the rap verse of "Blue Lights," the anti-injustice song that first positioned her as a SoundCloud darling in 2016, a hush fell over the room in awe of her precision.
Though Smith's boldface collaborations to date range from Drake to Kali Uchis, her debut album Lost & Found is free of featured acts. Much like this Tiny Desk performance, those 12 tracks show off Smith's talent in a minimalist way - musing about life and love with the ambiguity and sense of agency that only comes with newfound freedom.
After she finished, but before retreating to the comfort of Supreme sweats, Smith and her band bestowed the Tiny Desk with a blue lava lamp signed by every member. Keep an eye out for that Easter egg in future episodes.

"Teenage Fantasy"
"Blue Lights"

she needs to make a live album, groovy and jazzy like this…band is insane
I know right?! I keep coming back to this every now and then since it was published. Has album potential honestly
Pleaseeeeeeeee
There actually is a live recording of her latest album on her TH-cam channel :)
Omg she is so beatifull!!!.
O
Back here in 2024 - still a vibe.
Never left
what makes this tiny desk isn't just the singing but the absolutely CLEAN instrumentals
Yes. I think the best is always the bands backing the the main talent. It is much appreciated 💖💖
For real
She sounds good but why is everybody these days trying not to open the mouth when they sing? The mumbling drives me nuts
The sound guy does an amazing job.
@ in my opinion music flows together in a way you can’t replicate, you just let go and everyone vibes. The collaboration of artists in this way makes for some truly wonderful art each aspect adding onto the other to bring us this multi dimensional masterpiece.
I have such a bittersweet relationship with the tiny desk concerts because every artist sounds so amazing and unique here but I go back and listen to the same song in iTunes and most of the time it’s too digitized and missing the soul of the music like they show so beautifully here. But I truly hope Tiny Desk never stops it’s a true gift to music!!!
EXACTLY OMFG AHHHHH
I agree, but this one so much more so than others. Hands down one of my favourite ever tiny desks, but really really not a fan of her studio stuff.
they should release the audio as some like "Live Sessions" as albums on streaming services. Would be very good for most artist, but I guess not for their record company...
@@SamyDeluxeFan1993 It could work as a tax write-off if half the proceeds of every album would count towards supporting NPR
It's been a big problem for many years; soul-less music production sucks the life out of individuality and spark. All we are left with is junk food for a fast food music society. It's a shame as I beleive most music lovers have a much more diverse pallate...

The thing I love about Tiny Desk is that every performance is so different.
This is equally is beautiful because it’s not like a copy of any other song.
but can we talk about the drummer
Yes 😫😂
Ikr it’s so hard to find a really good one and most people don’t notice
Femi is a machine. You should check his band Ezra Collective.
Jada Nicole I WAS GONNA COMMENT
how about the bassist
Can someone please replace MTV with NPR!?!?!?!
Adam Peri why ?
Thibaut Step “If you know, you know”
NPR doesn't need to be MTV. They have a much smaller audience and that probably works out for the best
I disagree, if NPR could reach more people, then the world would be exposed to more amazing, original, inspiring artists. Having a "small audience" is not what NPR are aiming for either, I'm pretty sure they'd prefer a bigger audience
YES!!!!!
That guitar lick in on my mind sounds majestic. Drummer killed it. DONT SLEEP ON THE BASIST.
This band is a whole VIBE. Jorja sings so effortlessly. THIS is GREAT Music!!!
The drummers timing on “on my mind” is incredible.
Thank you for pointing that out tbh!!
He was literal metronome 🔥
Was feeling him at 17 secs. Great bad
The amazing Femi Koleoso who is in Ezra Collective
It's a beautiful performance.
Jorja's skin makes me want to stay hydrated and eat veggies
acne left the chat room***
if only it were that simple lol

And this drumming is breathtaking
OMG! In the first few seconds I got chills, because I can hear the ghost of Amy Winehouse in Jorja Smith's voice! Long may Jorja Smith grace us with her incredible voice!
I literally thought the same thing!!!!
@@erikrichardson6239yes!!!!!!!
The drummer didn't play any games
D. Val for realz
In Blue Lights he gave his best imho
He set the tone hard right off the bat
D. Val the drummer is amazing. He did a solo during her tour and he killed it. He’s very talented.
He's the drummer for the jazz band Ezra Collective. They did a song with Jorja on their album called Reason in Disguise.
Whoever chooses the artists at NPR has insanely good taste 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Joyce Chahine - Pianist As well as @THE COLOURS-SHOW 👏
NPR doesn't choose them, they choose NPR.
You should check out KEXP out of Seattle, similar taste and their sound engineer is unbelievable. They and NPR have some of the cleanest sounding audio, and you get a little taste of the live energy of the bands. Little Dragon had a stellar performance on their show, check it out.
Joy Nkirote yes love colours!!
Yes to everyone in this sub. NPR, KEXP, and Colours all have the best live music/artists/quality of most other channels, hands down
The drummer is smooth, whole band has great chemistry. And of course Jorja is amazing 🤩
Jorja's voice is like therapy
That drummer is phenomenal. Not only does he effortlessly display a mastery of both technical ability and creativity, he manages to play so appropriately for each song. Lovely fresh little grooves while keeping it simple when necessary. Never too much, never boring. You can't teach that kind of drumming.
I fell in love with Jorja a long time ago but this drummer has stolen my heart. Pure class.
Truth!
It's Femi Koleoso! Drums for Ezra Collective if you want to hear more
@@guyinahat1 nice one, absolutely loved them thanks man❤

Literally looks like she doesn’t even have to try to sing as beautifully as she does.
gw05smiles I love that about her. Effortless soul coming at you fast!
Looks effortless for the band as well, it’s just natural to them, especially the drummer.
I kind of wish she showed more emotion, but I’m being picky. She’s clearly awesome.
I agree that it seems effortless. But having listened to this performance several times now, I do find her overdrive a bit tiresome in the long run. She has a beautiful voice, if was able to keep it out of overdrive a bit more (I've no idea if that is asking too much technically, if she would be able to or if it is generally very very difficult to avoid for any singer) I would enjoy it even more :)
That’s what you call a singer lol
Drummer seems to be on some kind of serious mission, love him
You know they raw when the live is better than the actual version 💯💪
I see everyone freaking out how beautiful Jorja is. Yee, sure. BUT this band is amazing. Pure talent on every instrument and extremely well played together. Kudos to the them!

Imagine being born that beautiful and with a great voice too.
I bet it's not that easy to live like that ESPECIALLY if you have social anxiety. Men lookin' at you like you are a freshly cooked steak all the time and falling to their knees before they even know anything about who you really are. People are so sensitive to the golden ratio.. I would not like to be in her shoes I think.. and wonder often what is this thing called beauty that makes people value one over the other, generally speaking.
@@WazigeLogica Wow that was beautifully written!
Thank you @Nadia Josephina
I Love very interesting point of view. I never really thought about the disadvantages of being so beautiful before lol
@@WazigeLogica With a beautiful daughter of the same complexion who also has a wonderful, naturally gifted voice at the age of 8, I worry constantly about these very same things when she gets older.... Thank you for sharing the other point of view, this world can be so sad and infuriating with the way they objectify "beautiful" women, especially men. I pray my daughter isn't negatively impacted by those facts you stated... She will be a star, no doubt in my mind, and I hope no one will have the power to dim the light that shines within her.
She's looking so nonchalant, which gives you the impression that what she's doing is easy. She's super talented. The way she controls her voice is amazing.
When you towards the end of a tour the material is soooo familiar that it's effortless
She's a mumbler FFS.
its simply the expression of her talent!
She's super cool 😎

Time for Tiny Desk to drop a live Album with some of the best performances.

My thoughts exactly
What a skin ! :)
Her soul's vibe is unexplicable and eternal also.
Man, I kinda wish these types of music just played in real life instead of only online.
Ok fair enough she is amazing ! But let’s give credit to that insane drummer and the band in general.. all the good artists really are depending on the sensational music that embraces their crafted talent !
Tell em
yeah i feel like these tiny desk concerts are more the live musicians than the artists. it give me that similar feeling when i hear live music in the subway platform while en route of my commute. it's just that captivating! Ps. plus the reason i say that is cause also a musician haha #supportlivemusic

We must protest!
This singer has really a lot of charm, this laidback attitude, her voice, this mixure of youth voice and mature feelings, without mentionning she has a very nice skin (when you shot video, it has a relative but real importance). The last song was perfect, really. Thanks for sharing.

Big credit to the crowd for just letting the talent be heard, and massive credit due to the band. So incredible!
Came for Jorja, stayed for the drummer. DAMN!
I think she might be the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen.
MsPark I think resemble is the proper word here. Cornrows are universal. Alicia doesn't own them. And her attitude seems quite organic. Effortless. Just like Sadé. The similarities are quite apparent, I'll agree, but I don't see any imitation here; just a talented woman who is reminiscent of other talented women.
MsPark muses come in many shapes and flavors. The more, the merrier. :)
I agree
weenermeat i swear!!!
weenermeat Jorja is already my Queen. Her style, her voice brings something good for real music. And her debut album is incredibly beautiful. The album must soon be a classic.

What I love about her the most is her British accent and that got me wondering, how different would a musician/vocalist sound if they were born in a different part of the world?
