- Braces Explained: Detailing Wire Bends
In this video, I will be talking about something that you may notice later on in your treatment when you see your orthodontist bending wire. Wire can be bent by orthodontist for a number of reasons but the reason I’m going to discuss in this video is for “finishing and detailing bends.” Braces can be put on as ideally as possible but once all your teeth are lined up, your orthodontist may notice that a few teeth need minor adjustments. Brackets can either be repositioned to achieve the ideal goal or the wire can be bent to achieve the sought after result!
In this video, I discuss two different types of detailing wire bends: a “step” bend and a “z” bend. The example I use in this video is a step-up bend to help a lower premolar that is too intruded be extruded to its ideal position. Also I demonstrate a z-bend on a premolar that is tipped too far forward (or mesial). This will correct the root by moving it more towards the front of the mouth and uprighting the slanted crown

My ortho doesn’t tell me nothing. Thank you for these videos!
Mine is also not great about explaining things. He often leaves his assistants do it and they only speak Spanish. My Spanish is very good, but I sometimes only get the big picture. So I understood when I came out yesterday with a bend in my wire that it was to do "something" to my canines. Thanks to this video, now I know they are probably going to be moved downwards. Which explains why I was warned that I was in for a world of hurt in my final weeks of treatment (yep).
lmao same
Same here 😂
😂
I learnt from this channel that you don't spit after brushing
I love how he keeps saying "at the end of treatment"
I'm almost done!!!!
My orthodontist told me it would only take two or three more checkups... That was 18 months ago. 😒
Damn i just got started in august :(
@@evergreentree8042 LMFAOO! He lied to yo ass fam
Me too! But i have to go for a jaw surgery in 4 months😬😒
Love you
I truly enjoy these videos. I’m nearing the end of my treatment and these videos give me a better pic of what’s happening.
That's so fantastic. I'm glad to help you out with your journey! Congrats on almost being done
This is good to hear, I'm supposed to take my braces off in a month but my front teeth are not in the same height an one is a little rotated. Thought this was corrected early on so it's reassuring to know it can still be fixed :) Thanks!
my sister is nearing the end of her treatment and realised that her #11 is slightly tipped and she's super uncomfortable seeing that. I thought it was unsalvageable at first but thank god for your video, now I know it can be fixed!🙌🏼
It's good to know that I'm actually at the finishing stages of my treatment😩😩😩👏
Sweeet! And now you know why theyre wire bending too!
I've been waiting on videos like this!!! great job! I've been an ortho assistant for 7 years and i just got to work with a well none orthodontist that does this but never asked her ahahaha now i really understand why this wire bending is being done. thank you for the thoroughness! I'm enjoying the videos and I'm still learning. THANKS! :)
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind works & that's so great! I love having other dental professionals chime in! Congrats on the new job!
Hi! I'm a dental assistant in Canada. I am currently studying for my Ortho certification. Thank you for making such great videos! Many of them have helped me better understand and visualize what I'm learning :)
Hello do you know what is a final wire?
@@eeee6114 hi, it is usually a thick rectangular wire used to finalized the last movements of the teeth near the end of treatment
@@kiarhamontinola5226 so we can’t use it to fix the bite?
@@eeee6114 it would probably be too ridgid to fix bite with and could probably cause complications like root resorption if it's used too soon. But I'm also not an orthodontist, I'm just an assistant so I would ask an orthodontist for more clarity.
@@kiarhamontinola5226 Okay thank you^^
I have a month or two left in my braces journey and my ortho put bends in my wire bring two of my upper teeth down. I was not expecting it to hurt this much😩 thank u...this video explains it perfectly.🙏🏽
That's so awesome! (not the pain) but knowing what is going on
Bro I’ve had my first wire for my braces on for like 2 years. (I have to get extractions before we move on so that’s why it’s been so long) and 5 hours after I had the braces put on it felt like my teeth were going to fall out. Just pure pain. For the next two weeks my teeth were extremely loose. So I stopped eating as much and lost a few pounds.
Just got this done yesterday, and I felt it all day afterwards on my bottom row. Whew!😅. Grateful for Orajel and Motrin lol. My Ortho says my braces will be off in a few months. Thanks for explaining this procedure in detail.
can you do a wire video explaining different wires you get and why?
Absolutely ! I plan on doing that one very soon so hang tight!
IT WOULD BE SOOOO HELPFULLY! 💕
Braces Explained 1 year still waiting !
@@DrGregAsatrian and what is the difference between the red wire and the white and what they do
I'm at the end. Yay!!! Had a bend put in today, I asked what it was for and he said to pull my tooth down and out. All I know is I will be out of braces between next month and Dec. Longest 3 1/2 years of my life
I can't take my eyes off your teeth :D they r so perfectly aligned
Thank you so much!!
And white🦷✨🤍
I just had an adjustment today and when you said “at the end of treatment” I got so excited bc mine bent my wire and I was super confused why he did it. IM ALMOST DONEEE
We're you really almost done because mine bent my wires the other day like this and it hurts so much... I really hope I'm almost done too... lol
I got a new wire put in today and my orthodontist put about 3 bends in the wire (I'm about half way through my treatment). It was so painful after about an hour! My ortho also doesn't really explain things but I can see that one of them is to straighten up a tooth that's tilted to one side. So clever!
Very true they don’t say nothing .. that’s why I watch your videos you are the best thank you for your time🤗 I have 2 month’s with my braces..🙄😬
This whole channel has been more than helpful. Thank you !
Of course! I'm so glad that I've bee able to help !! More videos coming weekly :D haha
I just had my appointment a couple days ago. I’m not sure if you remember, but I made a list of concerns from watching your videos lol
My Doc was pretty impressed with my list, (glad I didn’t offend her knowledge) she was happy to know, I’m pretty involved in my braces journey and that when I see something I express myself.
I told her, she has you to blame lol!!
1. We spoke about my midline.
2. Passive Coils springs.
3. Smoothing my front tooth while wearing my braces... etc lol okay I’m done
Thanks again!
I ask questions to my Othro and his assistant and they act like they cant be bothered to explain anything. Its like pulling teeth to get a response out of them! thx, this explains a lot. I pray their actual work is better than their communication and customer service skills.
Keep killing it with the videos!
Yeeeyuh - when is our collab? I alrdy got the topic.. get @ me bruh
I’ve been in the detail phase for over 8 months. I’m so ready to take these off
Your video explaining braces is the best! It gives me a lot of knowledge about braces and it helps me to well cooperate with the ortho. treatment.
That is so awesome! I Hope to keep bringing you useful content!
VERY HELPFUL! I just got my lower wires detailed today, was wondering about it. Thank you :)
This is what I’m getting in the beginning of March 🤓 excited to know I’m almost done!
Thank you for all the clear info. That's great you went to UCLA for Ortho! Gosh, I wish I could have gone to you instead for my daughters' treatment! (My brother went there for Aerospace. Class of '12)
Aw thats great! I'd love to have seen your daughters for treatment - Go Bruins!
Thank you for uploading this! I've been trying to learn more about wire bends but haven't been able to find much info on them.
Of course ! I'm glad it was helpful! =]
You have like the best videos😃
Aww thank you so much!!! I really appreciate this =]
I like how he said that these bends are supposed to be towards the end of treatment but I’m only like 7 months into my 2 year treatment and I have 3 bends on my bottom wire and 1 on my top wire
Dr Greg is great. Shearing is caring. WE HAVE TO CHANGE BRACKET SLOT FOR PIGGY WIRE 1.5 UP AND 1.5 DOWN FROM MAIN SLOT SO THAT WE CAN INTRUDE AND EXTRUDE UPPER/LOWER FRONT TEETH JUST CHANGEING SLOT AND LITTLE BENDING WIRE OR NO BENDING AT ALL.
Thank you! This was so helpful, my ortho bent my top and bottom wire today and wow there’s some pressure
Right? But pressure means that teeth are moving so that's great! Pretty awesome that you were able to understand what was going on!
This is such a painful process it feels like when I first got my braces..but he said they do this near the end of treatment :,) it's almost over.
This is exactly what I was looking for
Thank you for your explanation. I live in france and i have put the brace on for 9 months. I have a teeth which is lower and the premolar is tipped far forward. The orthodontist has not done anything so far to shift that teeth in the straight position and when i asked her she didnot give any well explanation. All what she has done during 9 months were changing the thicker wires / appointment. I have 4 appointments in 9 months. Im réally disappointed. The problem here is that the more the i have to were the brace the more i have to pay. I really want to change to another orthodontist !!!!!
Can you do a colour video of which colours to get and what they look like on real people's teeth? Oh and good colour combos xD
That's a fantastic idea! I will definitely do something like that in an upcoming video =]
I love your video!💜 you explain it so that it is very easy to understand👍🏻
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad that they're helpful =]
these videos are really helpful! thank you for making them
Of course! Glad that I can help out =]!
:)
Why does it take so long to get braces of
And why have I had the same wire for 8 months
You don't want to move your teeth too fast because that's unhealthy for your teeth and your body! The final wire we work with (that we place these bends in) is used for several months at the end of your treatment!
Dr. Greg Asatrian I’m at the beginning of treatment tho
toykidz they do this to stop your teeth from moving while they’re trying to fix one problem area first. After the problem area is dealt with they’ll change the wire. Hope this helps
Off*
@@DrGregAsatrian Hi. what's the biggest gap that can be fixed between 24 and 25 ?
Just got my first bend a few days ago. My treatment is scheduled to be complete November this year but hopefully sooner.
Saweeeet! Hope so too!
i love this man lols
Loll aw thank you
If the ortho bring a front teeth down with the wire bend is it possible/happen that it go short/back again even though if you wear retainers regularly?? Please answer I really need help!!
I have braces now about 4 months . I noticed after the first month I was getting gaps between my lower teeth I never had before. Is this normal ? My teeth in certain areas seem more spaced/crooked then ever.
I know it's late but yes it's normal . I felt the same with my braces
Here after my orthodontist put some bends in my wire. I haven’t felt pain in a while but oh man that’ll do it! Lol
The first time they bent my wires I thought they made a mistake because as I was feeling the wire with my tongue it felt like it was sticking out, so I went back to tell them that the wires are coming off and they told me its suppose to be like that lmao Okay Doc. only if you had just walked me step by step what where you doing to my teeth I wouldn't look so stupid coming in to fix the out-of-place wires LMAO 🤣 what a day 😅
I was surprised when my orthodontist made a deep bend to my wire to pull down the 2 of my 3 impacted canines.
Great video I would definitely want a future video on other reasons for wire bending but this was a amazing video keep up the good work
Absolutely ! I will definitely do that !
Please make a video on sequence of wires, e.g which wire to be placed first and it should be changed to the next one
These are dependent on the patients needs and the providers experience and preference - there is no cookie-cutter way to do orthodontics
I really love all of your videos!!! 💕💕💕
This is my third time getting braces and I’m really not happy with my orthodontist and my results and I think it’s so unfair that they charge me for emergency visits just because I’m picky about the placement of my teeth and sometimes my orthodontist bends my wires in a way that makes me teeth crooked just because he’s too busy to reposition my brackets. I called them a few days ago to schedule an extra appointment and they said I come in too much and I have to wait for my appointment in a rude tone. Like I’m paying a lot of money for this service and I deserve to walk out happy with my results.
Any videos on different types of wires and why?
I just got my premolars and wisdom teeth extracted (2 premolars at the top, 2 premolars at the bottom, and all four wisdom teeth) on Friday. Now, my orthodontist is finally going to connect the wires through to my back molars (right now they’re only on my front 7 teeth, top and bottom) to fix my protrusion. I said all of that to say, my mouth hurts so bad 😭😂
The tough part is over my friend! Now its the time that you'll start seeing changes in your teeth. Excited for you! Keep me up to date with your progress - I'd love to hear how it goes!
Dr. Greg, can you do a video about repo (repositioning) appointments, what's involved, and how an orthodontist uses a pano x-ray for determining the repositioning? I've had Damon braces for well over a year now, and my dear friend, who is an orthodontics professor across the country, has been telling me from early on that many of my brackets were not in the correct positions and encouraging me to ask my orthodontist to reposition them immediately. My orthodontist disagreed, saying that with Damon braces, repositioning is only done in the second year after the scheduled pano, even though at the same time he wondered why my progress was so slow (my professor friend said, "it's because you need repo!!"). At my last appointment, my orthodontist finally did the second pano x-ray in preparation for repositioning my brackets, so I'm curious to see how many brackets will be repositioned and how. In the meantime, can you explain why orthodontists do detailed wire bends instead of just repositioning the bracket on the tooth in question? Thank you for all that you do!
Is this why they did an x-ray halfway through my treatment? To see if the roots were straight?
hi doc, can u show some other bends! thanks
Sure! =] I'd be happy to do a part 2 of this video sometime and do some more detailing bends !!
Hi Doctor so today I have my visit and the place I go to rotates the doctors I see. I always have someone knew… but today she switched my wire to stainless steel what would be the reason ? I didn’t hear her mention they had to do any bends. All she said is we going to continue closing your spaces .
Just curious for myself I never get like a detailed discussion with them
Thanks Doctor! GREAT STUFF!! an idea for another videos ...explaining wire sizes and more detailes about wires :)
Fantastic idea! I actually have a video something like coming out tomorrow morning so hang tight ! Just finishing it up right now =]
Video on twin block appliance/ expander on adults and orthodontic relapse, please
could you do a video on what the little dots are that the put on the wire
I could but need clarify it a bit more =] Is it the little tubes that go around the wire?
Thank you so much for sharing
Will you please make the third orthodontic wire bending
Very great as always doc❤
Thank you so much Lilly =] I really appreciate it!
So my front tooth, one is shorter than the other i dont have my wire cause of an expander but will this work for my front tooth! Also i love your videos so much💞💞 ive been watching for awhile
Hi Greg! Love your videos. Are you able to do a video about torque bends. I have a stubborn canine tooth and my orthodontists put a bend in the wire that is for torque and I would like to understand it more. It seems different than the tilt bend you described in this video. Thank you!
Excellent quality video!
Thank you so much =]
So amazing how much wires can do
Thank you for explaining.
Great video! Can detailing also be done using heavy gauge BT wires?
I just got bends in my top wire for two teeth. When they snapped the wire back into the bracket, It was the most pain I have felt my entire treatment. Luckily only three more months to go.
good stuff Dr. Greg! keep it up !
Thanks doc
Absolutely! Thank you for watching =]
I have a slight bend on the top front teeth wire. I thought it was an accident done at ortho!😁😆
I got a tma wire and my ortho is using it to close gaps. can u maybe make a video explaining this a bit more and tma wires in general?
Hi,
Thanks for all the informative content in your videos. I just have a quick question. My orthodontist told me that I would be starting detailing next visit and I was wondering how long this process normally takes.
Thanks!
I’m convinced at this point this is like sorcery 😂 lol but for real this is intense knowledge understanding all of this
Sir can you plz make video on ortho wire sequence
What about on that is out of lien? I get mine off soon next appointment and on my lower molars on each side to two of them are out of line and at my last appointment they send bending a lot
These videos are awesome! Thank you
Ah thank you so much!! I really appreciate your support 😀
Hi Dr. Greg. Can u make a video showing what kind of pliers to use for bending. I guess there are some special pliers for it. Btw ur videos are informative. Thank you
Yup, moving forward I can definitely do a video on the different pliers I use =]
Okay help I got my wire bent like the Z bend and it’s only a day later but my wire at the back bracket has gone and I don’t know what to do it’s like there’s now a gap in between the bracket where wire should be 😕
love your video and detailed explanation, my ortho make me a elongated u-turn wire bend near the gap where my tooth was extracted and can you suggest what it for? thank you
Is their anyway teeth can be whitened with braces???
I advise against whitening your teeth WHILE in braces because it will whiten everything except the little part that's covered with the brackets. I do advise whitening though a few months after you get the braces off!
Dr. Greg Asatrian thank you so much!
I love your videos, I find them so helpful. Im wondering if you can do a video explaining the use of 2 archwires in my brackets, my original one and another one. Today was my 8 week 1st adjustment. I have damon clear braces.
Thank you.
Very informative, doctor thank you.
Are these rectangular NiTi wires?
Thank you very much! The wires used in this video were a rectangular steel wire
Hi Dr.Greg love your video your awesome dentist explaining step by step😊 I want to know where your dentist office located 😊
Can you also make a video explaining if you can wear Hawley Retainers after doing implant. Thank you so much☺
Ah thank you so much! I am actually working at UCLA for just under 1 more year and then I dont know where I will be but I will probably video update of where I end up! =] Also, I will make a video on Hawley retainers soon!
Good evening Dr.
can you please tell me how can we intrude molar teeth with out surgical interference even by using surgical screw.. because the patient is afraid of that..
thank you so much..
Dr. Greg...what do you do if one side is open bite...would you step down the whole group of teeth? Would you let them settle later? Wouldn't a retainer prevent settling?
Can you do a video on occlusal canting and possible solutions?
Hey when are you gonna make the head gear video my orthodontist said I need one
Hopefully soon! I'm trying to get to making these videos as fast as I can!
Does the wire go straight once in right spot?
Can you make a video on lace wire? I just got mine today 😭 almost a year since I started my treatment 😊
Yea! I think I may do that one next =]
Can you show me how to correct tipping in extraction sites..
What is the effect of open vertical loops in the archwire? And what is the effect once the orthodontics skewed the vertical loop a bit?
Nice doc, I was wondering that heheh what a coincidence? I have a question or I think it is a idea request about the importance of use all the time the elastic bands and how we can remember use them after brush teeth or eat
That's awesome idea & Yea! I'll get around to posting something on that soon!
Hi Dr. What's up?
When I tracted upper 4 distally in severly crowded CL 1 molar and canine relationship with 17 * 25 ss wire with stopper..at the end.. the upper 6 was tilted (mesially intruded and distally extruded).. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️.
Please Dr., how can I upright it again by simple technique if I couldn't do it by wire bending like L loop? 🙏🙏🌹🌹.
note.. the upper 5 was heavily filled, so it was indicated for extraction.
Thanks for this very helpful video doc, but I've wondered after watching this video, what happens when someone has a tooth that's actually higher than the other teeth. How do orthodontist go about fixing that issue?
There are a few different ways but usually by using a shape memory wire (check out my video on NiTi wires)
Dr. Greg Asatrian thank you for responding (^_^) I actually already watched that video. I may have watched all your videos already lol. My question was just out of curiosity after watching your vid (and know of persons with the issue), but ironically I've realized that my Ortho inadvertently did a step up treatment on my lower incisors and cuspids in an attempt to correct protruding teeth with the aid of elastics. I really hope he can fix it; as my lower arch now resembles ascending steps....
Hi! Can you please explain why I have a normal wire and then a twisted one on top of that?
Hi
You should make presentation about about the back and turgid, usage wire different step-by-step
I've had some bends put in my wires today to bring one of my top teeth down and amazingly my tooth is already where it needs to be, if not a little too far past the other tooth now. It also seems like the way the wire has been bent, its forcing the tooth backwards too, so they're no longer super straight. Should this correct itself or is this something the ortho will have to address at my next appointment?
Hi doc. Can you make a video about fixing a rotated tooth?
I can in the future! Check out my video on NiTi wires. Should help explain it!
Lol I didn’t know my treatment was coming to an end. A lady just told me the doctor was going to detail my wire, and once they were put in I felt immediate pressure that I haven’t felt since I got them on, even with tightening.
Usually detailing is on specific teeth so you feel a lot of pressure on specific teeth!
Braces Explained yeah it’s crazy, and I also have my wisdom teeth coming in. Talk about pain!! 😅
Hi doc i like your videos too much, very informative and concepts clearing thanks alot
Ah thank you so much! I really appreciate it =]
Which wire do u use for the finishing bend? SS or TMA. What dimensions for the 022 slot?
Can you do a video explaining how to bend the wire to fix a teeth that is uneven/poking out compared to the rest of the teeth? All my other teeth are perfectly aligned but my ortho can't seem to get 1 teeth aligned and whenever the wire is bent it causes a shift in the other teeth and everything just gets screwed up. 😞
Please show or explain on patient
