      For me my grandparents, they briefly emigrated to NY and my blue haven was their fave song as after a long day at work my grandfather would come home to his wife and baby makes 3...then it was back to 4 and they moved back to Ireland and then it was 8 lucky for me as my mum was no 7.All lived long and fruitful lives each better than the other and my Aunt who lived in US in the 20s still alive and in good health in Devon...

    Well, I can only sit here and ponder the fact why I would find this music so utterly satisfying. I am not a modern man by any meassurement, I primarily listen to 60's, 70's and some gems from the 80's.
    Somehow i eventually end up here or on some other strange blast from the past.

    I always find it interesting that in the dark days of war and the Great Depression, music was upbeat, happy and positive. Angry, nihilistic, depressing pop music only became popular during more recent times of peace and plenty.

      ... Have you looked at surrealism (which came out after WWI. Was basically art saying "the world is hell, humans are bad, and there is no beauty.) It was some pretty dark stuff

    • @Londonfogey
      @Londonfogey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@w.k.astrolabe280 True, but it wasn't a mass art form, it was mainly for the intellectual elite. Mass-market nihilism didn't really occur until the late 1960s.

    Beautiful music. Reminds me of lovely Sunday brunches at the Eaton's 9th Floor Art Deco restaurant in Montreal. Now sadly closed. (Another unique architectural gem that bit the dust). Despite the many efforts and petitions to revive the place, I get the impression, it will come to nothing. At least by listening to this music, I can enjoy and share in the spirit of art deco at home. ;)

    Every era produces crap. Even the good old days. I am not a nostalgia buff. But I do prefer music from the 30s and 40s. The good stuff. Same with movies, all forms of entertainment - they had a lot of junk back then too. I find that most people enjoy music they grew up with, usually their late teens or 20s. But the music on this album - I play it a lot - people who were 20 years old back then would be in their 100s today. But if those people were alive today you could approach them at random and most wouldn't know the songs on this album. I do think the music of today is mostly garbage. Sometimes something good comes along. I don't think it's so much the era as what endures. As an updated example I enjoy Chet Baker and Jeri Southern and other singers and musicians from the 50s - June Christy too. Someone in their early 20s during the popularity of those people would be in their 70s today - like me. But if you were to walk up to the average 70 or 80 year old I don't think they'd recognize the people I just mentioned. So it's not just nostalgia or certain eras, it's the really good stuff that endures from those eras. Some stuff is remembered and enjoyed for nostalgia only. Nothing wrong with that. But with this music, with most music, for me it's not nostalgia - it's just good music. Real good music. I really love Al Bowl's stuff. Some of the characters on this album that I didn't care much for in the beginning grew on me. Whoever puts this stuff together is to be commended. Lots of compilations are tossed together without any thought. This is a well done album - has an aura to it - as if it were recorded all on the same day. Thanks, and sorry for the length.

    Some of the music directly influenced the movie SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959), which is set in the Roaring Twenties.
    They are not direct copies, but strikingly similar. You can see the movie versions on youtube if you search the titles.
    Marylin's heartbroken song, "I'm Through With Love" sung in the club when Tony finally reveals that he is a man and in love with her, is very similar to mark 01:16:39 Al Bowlly Love Locked Out. You can definitely hear the similarities. Look up Marilyn Monroe: I'm Through with Love - Some Like It Hot, on TH-cam and you will see.
    Also, the love theme as played when Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis meet on the yacht, "Learning to Kiss " is very similar to mark 01:25:34 Greta Keller Stairway To The Stars. That one is even more similar. Look up the title Some Like It Hot (9/11) Movie CLIP - Learning to Kiss (1959) on TH-cam and you will see.
    I was listening to this playlist, and thought; Hey! Those songs are similar to the movie, haha. There is a whole lot more music inspired by the Twenties in the movie and I think it would make an excellent inspired playlist to do all of it.

    In these days I listen to this music in between the Agatha Christie series with Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple on this TH-cam channel. apparently this kind of entertainment is not controversial..It's incredible how people managed to keep up the spirits in between two world wars. In these days there are not many signs of optimistic and artistic expression. It's doom and gloom.

    This would an ideal site, with great music - if it weren't so frequently and abruptly interrupted with "loud" ads and the crap music that accompanies it, which then completely kills the mood. Just an observation.

    This music is bitter sweet to me . I had a neighbor back in 1950 . Her name was Mrs. Creegan , widow very old . I would hear the music coming from her apt. . My neighborhood was pretty much Hispanic by that time. White flight, so sad she was the last of her people left behind . No family, maybe . Sad 😢😢😢
