What a waste of human effort and natural resources. There may be many proposed reasons behind the construction for the cult like followers and idol worshippers but the main reason is mostly image portrayal and PR work for both the leaders of the countries involved. The resources spent for building such a structure could've lifted many families from poverty and hunger first. In the ancient times it was much easier to pursue such opulent blunder because the cost of human lives was dirt cheap and slavery was mostly a norm in some way, shape or form. There's no real inherent value for the common population to take up such projects in the 21st century instead of tending to the most needed improvement of human livelihood right in front of their eyes. And the citizens? Oh yea, they'll get all sensitive and insecure if anybody pointed out anything other than blindly praise their hocus pocus practices crap. Nobody is stopping anybody or any culture from any physical, mental and spiritual practices for the growth of human consciousness, wellbeing and harmony with nature.
