- I know very few people who actually use 28-point speed tables yet they offer very effective ways to customize how your locomotives respond to throttle commands. In this video I'll show you how you can use DecoderPro to create customized speed tables that will make your locomotives operate much more like the prototype locomotives they are based on.

Hey Larry. Personally I love your brief synopsis at the start of your videos. I hope you keep enjoy making videos. IMHO your the best teacher I've listened to and have learned so much. It has given me the confidence to learn new skills (soldering) and try new things (decoder installation). Next up, teach myself how my computer works and learn Decoder Pro from your early videos. Larry, I like it when you talk. You tell us what your going to tell us, you tell us, you tell us what you told us and why it could be useful to us. Easy to see and understand practical examples along the way too. Some of your content is such that is not relevant to me and which I will never use. However, I can't remember any of your videos that I skipped through once started. Endeavor to persevere.

Hi Larry, another great video. It's "funny" that you discussed viewer comments about you "waffling" because just a few days ago I was watching another TH-cam channel where the host also addressed his viewers commenting on him "waffling " too long at the beginning of his videos. Don't change anything, your videos are fine as they are.
Don't mind them people that complain about you talking....these are learning videos and you have to explain to teach ! I enjoy how you explain how you do everything cause I'm trying to learn DCC and how to convert my DC over to DCC....you're doing a great job !! Keep up the good videos

Nice vid. For what it's worth, I'm viewing to see what knowledge you have to impart on any particular day. I'm back in the hobby after a couple decades and know enough to know how much I don't know. DCC solved the issues that previously caused me to lose interest, and is what brought me back to this hobby. While I may question you closely from time to time, I accept that you have the cred to be an authority whose opinion and observations I trust. Respect.

Hey Larry. I feel your pain about the comments. I get similar comments and have a similar philosophy. I want to explain for those who want explanation, and those who don't can skip forward with no effort if they choose.
WOW Larry boy you really took us into the Nuts& Bolts of How -to ..I must admit I found myself all Crossthreaded however I can go back again & again..Oh on the whinners..Maybe there NOT familiar with HOW INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS TEACH there the ones we can no longer SPANK or maybe they never experienced School or ability to recognize a exellent teacher!
New to DCC. Just bought my first DCC locomotive (Athearn Genesis) and the NCS PowerCab starter kit. Do off-the-shelf DCC Locos come with pre-programmed speed curves? Enjoy all your videos, Larry, find them very helpful. Purchased a copy of your wiring book. Ignore the social media trolls.
They should already be optimized for that specific loco model. However individual modelers like to further customize the decoders settings for their preferences. For example the sound volumes are often too loud for my preferences. I think they do this somas to impress folks who want to hear them before they buy and volume seems to impress, at least until you get it home to the confines of your layout. And if you get several droning on at the same time it can get downright annoying!

I have not done that since it would require having accessory decoders attached to all my Tortoises. It would require a major refit at this point.

A quick glance around YooToob shows us there are a ton of model railroad videos available, and a good handful of producers who have racked up large collections of videos to choose from.
The reason I prefer your work above all others is because of the 'chatter' subject you mention. I enjoy a model railroad conversation as much as the next person. But I tire of people who insist on presenting five minutes of useful information in a 45-minute video. Even though their intentions may be the highest, few others take the time to plan their presentations as you do, with the result that we have to live through a lot of verbal wandering around before they arrive at anything useful or interesting to say.
I wonder if you have formal teaching in your background, because you don't waste any of our time. From the get-go your presentation is, and stays on point. That can only happen because the instructor (you) put as much planning into their presentation as they have into learning their subject. A lot of people could learn useful things from watching your videos, and it isn't just about the nuts and bolts of model railroading. Thanks again, Larry.

I haven't chosen my throttle system yet and I gather that each maker must make their own and then their are ones called sprog and dccxx so I was just curious what you would recommend? perhaps I am again overthinking it but I find your explanation very useful. also thank you for the lighting and constant power electronic videos, perfect for us non electronic types. I've been trying to get this all figured out for our fleet. I've been speed matching them using the way you explained in the last video with CVs 2, 5 and 6. My question is, can I put the corresponding values from the 3 CVs to the corresponding CVs in the speed table and then put a check mark in the one on the far left and right, and the middle and then "match ends" to get a clean speed curve? Also, with the majority of the diesel locos I would like them to rev up to like notch 2 before moving, so should the first 2 or 3 speed steps be set the same?
I’ll have to test that to see what you mean. On the second question I would expect that by setting the first 2 steps to “0” the loco would not move but I am not sue whether the prime mover sound would ramp up-easy enough to test using ops mode and DecoderPro.

Hi Larry, love your videos so stickI to your guns - I’ve got staging with 4 track return loops - what’s the best way to wire in dcc - does each track need an auto reverser ($$$) or put one on the lead track ?
If the staging tracks are all within one reverse loop then one autoreverser will handle the job.
Great video Larry. I am a neophyte when comes to DCC your videos may it a lot easier you use. I have a question. Why do some locomotive run very fast on the same speed setting. I have an n scale RDC that does 200 mph and with all the same setting my GP 4o will only ever get to 70 mph. I use the Accutrack II Model Train Speedometer to measure their speeds. Thanks
Different manufacturers use different gear ratios and different motors which run at different speeds. All that means your locos will respond differently to the same throttle setting. It is also why speed matching is necessary to run multiple locos in a consist.
How do speed tables interact with acceleration and deceleration rates?
I have this question too. I have digitrax stuff and they have to be the worst at explaining their equipment. I have a PR4 and the documentation (that I have seen) doesn't even explain what the buttons are.
You explained speed tables for freight & passenger locos fine. What about switch engines?
Just cut it down a bit more can even truncate the top of the speed curve to s moving slow.
I have Decoder Pro and a PR3. I’m running all narrow gauge steam engines, On30 BLI C-16s. I’m eyeing the speed tables for another use. Mainly to keep my grandson from running my locos like slot cars. I have replaced the Original QSI DCC with Tsunami 2200 Steam 2 decoders with the larger Current Keepers. I want to limit the top speed the engines can run. I normally run my C-16s slowly. For example on the DCS-52 the throttle is set to less than 1. Most of the time half way between 0 and 1. The C-16s run fantastic. You can really notice a change in sound when these start into a grade. Any thoughts on limiting top speed on these locos?
If using a 3 point curve then just set CV 5 to a value about the same as CV 6. That way it will accelerate to the midpoint speed and then not increase or only a small amount. With the 28 point curve you can “shape” the response curve more if desired.
Speaking of speed, when I go to convert old dc locomotives to dcc, I use digitrax decorders because that's all the decoders that my store sells. Now when I test them out on my NCE system they crawl like pretty slow and don't go past 1/2 speed, now when I put them on my bachmann dcc system, they fly. Is it the decoders that I'm using hinder the speed of those models?
That is really odd. I have been using Digitrax decoders on various DCC systems since 1994 and never have seen that behavior. How many decoders do you have that do this?

Check the voltage of the power supply. Both these systems are voltage followers meaning the voltage supplied to the decoder will be proportional to what is being supplied to the system. So if your Bachmann power supply has a significantly higher voltage than the NCE then that might be the reason.

Try 1000 ohms, most LEDs will do fine with that.

That depends on a lot of factors. I think K discussed that in my video on command stations and boosters.
I also say stick with your original format. Many of us need a detailed explanation. I am a bit confused by one point. It is my understanding that DCC does not use increasing or decreasing voltage to control motor speed yet your explanation of forward and reverse trim does increase or decrease voltage. Also, I noted that the Decoder Pro speed chart says 28 points but only shows 14. Just an observation here. 14 works just fine.
