As a 10 year alcoholic, the low quality sleep is one of the worst parts of the addiction. 4-5 hours after passing out, I'd wake up and be tired as hell but couldn't fall back asleep for at least another 4-5 hours of laying in bed feeling like shit. It's exhausting and there's no wonder why the shit ages you prematurely.

Nail on the head with the alcohol comments. I was a massive weekend drinker until 12 months ago when I got a Garmin and learnt about HRV and tracked my sleep. Giving up drinking was a no brainer. I now run marathons whereas I used to struggle to run a bath on a Sunday.

Awesome, same with me regarding Cannabis. When I smoked my sleep was around ~6 hours and there was less deep / REM. As I sobered up, my sleep instantly began hovering ~8 hours with better REM. I still had restlessness throughout the night (probably withdrawal symptoms) but it has gotten better in just a months time.

Wow! This video came at the right time. I've been sober now for an entire week after getting drunk consistently every night for the past 3 years now. Sleep was very difficult for the first day or two but once your mind adjusts to falling asleep naturally, you'll feel so relaxed and in the morning you'll wake up feeling extremely rested. I drank because I told myself I couldn't sleep without it but now I can see that it was the one thing preventing me from getting good sleep. Make the change, it'll change your life!

    • @grantwlms
      @grantwlms ปีที่แล้ว +5

If you look at the science, alcohol makes yours sleep 60% worse and prevents your brain from fully recovering.. which is why we sleep in the first place. Alcohol significantly decreases natural melatonin production for multiple hours of your sleep which stops you from actually getting any meaningful deep sleep. If you did this for any longer you would have some pretty bad long term side effects from your lack of ability to fully recover. People think it helps them sleep because it knocks you out but that couldn't be further from the truth. I used to drink all the time too but it's 100% best to keep it to a once per week thing.

Switch to pouches as an intermediary stage if you have trouble quitting vaping or smoking. The nicotine takes a longer path in the bloodstream, slowing the lag between consumption and it hitting the brain, which makes it less addictive and habit forming.
Pouches also have barely any negative side effects (loss of membrane on lip and gum) in case you choose to stick with nicotine but not be a slave to it. Nicotine in of itself does not harm your health.

Vaping saves lives. When you said you don’t see a point in vaping, the entire purpose and reason vaping was created was to help smokers quit cigarettes. And it is extremely effective at doing that. I smoked for 3 years and quit cigarettes in 4 day thanks to vaping. I’ve been vaping 5 years now and have had zero negative health issues. Not only that, I feel much better than when I smoked.
The question should not be “is vaping safe”, even though it is, in my opinion. And I will also add that not only is vaping safer, after many years of study, vaping has been found to be 95-98% safer than cigarettes. However, you are correct about nicotine; it is not the problem.

@@Logan_Patrick8 you’re speaking nonsense. Do you even know how vaping works? Do some research before you start spewing incorrect information all over the internet about a technology that literally has saves MILLIONS of lives, including my own. Zyn is a good product also, I’ve seen it work for people.
However, vaping has and will continue to save way more lives than Zyn ever will..and it’s not even close. I’ll tell you how vaping works. There is a wicking material (usually cotton) wrapped around or inside of a heating element (a coil), usually made out of Kanthal or Nichrome wire. The cotton is soaked in eliquid (made up of 2-3 base ingredients plus flavoring, all safe for human consumption and is consumed in food already). The heating element/coil is heated up with battery power, thus creating a vapor that emits from the cotton and coil. The metal is just there to heat up the eliquid that is soaked in the cotton. The metal/coil does not emit smoke itself. It’s simply there to heat up eliquid.

There are no combustible products in modern vape devices so long as your wicks stay saturated. There's no reason to believe it's completely harmless, but neither is breathing the air in an urban or suburban area. Every study not funded by a pharmaceutical company has concluded that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking. In other words, it's probably not worth starting compared to another method if you want to add nicotine to your life. But, it is unquestionably better than smoking. And as a side benefit, switching from smoking to vaping doesn't feel like quitting. It just feels like you forget to smoke. After which, smoking is no longer a positive experience.

Started vaping about 10 years ago to get myself off cigarettes. Vaping was still very new, not many people knew about it, so I was one of the first (at least in my area).
About a year and a half ago, my health started to rapidly deteriorate, and in Feb 2022 I was diagnosed with leukemia. Three rounds of chemotherapy, one stem cell transplant, and a long year of recovery later, I am finally starting to feel normal again. No family history of leukemia, and otherwise I was in very good health.

What I wanted to say about your comment is that if you smoked cigarettes before you started vaping, then it's really hard to tell if it was the vaping or the smoking that ultimately was the problem (or neither). As a wellness obsessed physician and a regular listener to Attia’s podcast, the Drive, I am shocked to hear him state that he uses nicotine! Beyond the anxiety inducing withdrawl from nicotine there is evidence that nicotine ITSELF can lead to cancer via increased cell proliferation, micronuclei formation, angiogenesis, genotoxicity, chromosomal aberrations, etc. (source T. Sanner, Frontiers in Oncology, 2015). Sure maybe not yet proven in the most pristine prospective double blind human trials that nicotine gum causes cancer, and sure the harmful effects of the gum are less than smoking cigarettes, but as a risk obsessed longevity concierge physician Attia should at least acknowledge that there is evidence pointing towards harmful effects of nicotine ITSELF.

I’ve observed some unique, bigger picture issues with vaping:
    1. Lots of kids, teens, adults picking it up that normally would not have picked up smoking.
    2. The liter especially from disposable vapes like Elf Bars and alike is insane. Go to any urban area they’re all over the sidewalks and God knows where else.
    3. I work with several people currently that quit smoking cigarettes years ago, took up vaping and haven’t quit but want to. They both said they found vaping more difficult to quit because of the habitual aspect and how convenient it is to vape compared to cigs which leads me to….
    4. Most people who vape are doing it practically all day because it doesn’t have the repercussions smoking a cigarette has in your house, business, car, etc. I’m curious as to the effects on health and addiction are from ingesting such high levels of nicotine over the course of a day.

Your reasoning is exactly why I never switched to vaping to help quit smoking. For me, 90% of the joy of a cigarette was taking a break and going outside for ten minutes to smoke one. I reasoned like you did that if I started vaping, I could just sit in my house and do it all day long, without breaks. I reasoned that would make vaping even harder to quit than smoking. Not to mention vaping doesn't carry the social stigma, the bad smell on clothes and taste in your mouth, etc.
So I let myself smoke until I felt ready to quit, and then just stopped. When you're really ready, it's not that hard. You just have to make it through the first day, and then you know you can do it. Taking long walks helped, and I started those probably a year before I quit.

    • @grazzitdvram
      @grazzitdvram ปีที่แล้ว +2

Vapes generally have fairly low concentrations of nicotine because it feels quite harsh on the throat in higher quantities. Its part of the reason why someone who vapes tends to be hitting it constantly because it's a fairly low amount in comparison to a cigarette. Also you start getting the runs and nausea long before you would reach some dangerous level of nicotine, almost exactly like you'd feel from smoking too many cigarettes in a row.
The concern is what the constant exposure to propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin in vapor form will do to the lungs at high doses over years. They're both FDA approved food grade additives that are also commonly used in smoke machines, but there really isn't a study on what breathing in that vapor consistently for 10+ years will do to you. There are only 2 other ingredients that should be in the "juice" nicootine and fda approved food flavoring btw.

They were pleasantly aromatic, especially the pipes.
A lot of the movies I watched had actors smoking. It was something adults did and when you're young often you mimic the actions of adults.
For me there's something vaguely seductive about the way the smoke twirls, dances and lingers on the air.
Back in the day there was some kind of camaraderie among smokers. It also presented opportunities to talk to women, namely outside of bars before smartphones were invented.
Tobacco can have a taste similar to coffee or very dark chocolate. Rich, bitter and complex.

Long-term nicotine exposure is also linked with an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, as well as disruptions to fetal brain development during pregnancy.
From a physiological perspective, nicotine use is associated with pronounced cardiovascular effects, including increased blood pressure and heart rate, which can promote the development of heart disease and stroke. Nicotine also damages the lining of blood vessels, making them more vulnerable to plaque formation and blockages, as well as contributing to peripheral vascular disease and aortic aneurysms. The speed at which the nicotine hits the brain seems to be the main factor for how addictive it is. Meaning, how long is the duration from intake to appearing in the brain.
With cigarettes and vapes, the nicotine is absorbed in the lungs. Blood in the lungs quickly go directly to the heart, then a portion of that blood goes directly to the brain. Takes literally a couple of seconds (2 to 5).
With pouches and patches, the nicotine is absorbed in veins on the skin/lip. That blood then goes to the lungs slowly, then same path as above. Takes between 20 to 40 seconds.
With gum, the nicotine is swallowed (only gums give burning throat sensation), then absorbed in the gut. Gut -> lungs -> heart -> brain. Takes between 30 to 60 seconds.
I've used pouches for like 7 months. Roughly 60 mg nicotine per day. Ran out of pouches a few months back and didn't have any for 3 days. Got a headache first day which was remedied by 200 mg caffeine. Otherwise no issues at all during those 3 days. This guy is quite right that he doesn't know enough about vaping to comment on it, first off vaping when done correctly burns nothing, if you burn the wicking material or have hot spots on the heating element (spots that are not in contact with the wick) that's a bad thing and the vaper will immediately detect the difference because its quite unpleasant. 2nd there is legislation in all the states of the USA on what you need to do to be able to create the "juice" which straight up requires a lab quality clean room with legislation constantly marching towards stricter and more expensive regulations to meet which is likely going to make the product even better but its also how big tobacco is just positioning themselves to be the ultimate winners.
The vape itself is basically a really small fog machine and operates the same way with a combination of vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol heated to produce the vapor with the addition of fda approved food flavoring and nicotine.

@@dant.6364 Because drinking alcohol is fun. Cycling has mostly European roots where alcohol is part of the social order. So in the Tour de France you see champagne at the finish for many years (like in car racing). In the US there has been a recent trend toward beer drinking associated with cycling, mainly in mountain biking but with hipsters and millennials I’ve seen it be cool to talk about how you drink beer in association with riding. But to answer your question, cycling “culture” is human culture. And humans self-medicate. One might say it is as fundamental to the species as food, water, shelter, belonging, language, etc. So other than cultures specifically forbidding alcohol, human culture is most often alcohol-centric. Oh, and by the way, COFFEE is more a part of cycling culture than alcohol. Cyclists are coffee fanatics. And what is coffee but self-medication? Cycling training and racing involves a significant amount of self-induced pain. Alcohol helps with the pain. But I’ve never seen an alcoholic bike racer and I’ve been racing my bike over 50 years and coached elite cyclists for decades. Once a week heavy drinker here (then don’t even bother with a single drink any other days).
I find that I often wake up the day after drinking feeling very good. My mood is boosted, and it’s almost like the buzz is carrying over. I can only imagine that my biochemistry is facilitating this, but there’s also something to be said for the cognitive moral boost alcohol can carry over into the next day. I would like to see studies investigating this.

I dislike most all longevity experts because the true objective seems to be the delusional modern iteration of shooting for immortality. So you’re starting from an irrational space to begin with. Much better to focus on the significant harm reduction from vaping which is already well documented. Living to 90 to 100 most likely is not in the cards for anyone including podcasters.

"Chewing tobacco" is a different thing. I use the same thing he's talking about I think. Nicotine pouches, they're just cellulose fibre soaked in nicotine and optionally flavours whereas oral tobacco products have all sorts of different chemicals which make their risks higher and harder to quantify.

I do not consume a lot of alcohol, generally speaking. I do not drink during the week except very rarely, and only if I can justify it (A 'stressful day' is not one of the justifications).
When I do drink, it is only the top shelf liquor. The saying "The cheaper the liquor, the more expensive the hangover" is DAMN true. I can consume many more units of high quality whiskey, rum, brandy, and even vodka, than I can the cheap stuff before I have to stop.
The cheap stuff sends the alcohol straight to the head. You drink BECAUSE you want to get drunk.

I use nicotine pouches as well. Volt Deep Freeze. 12.5mg per pouch, 21 pouches per box, about 3$ per box.
Helps me be a productive programmer and doesn't affect sleep the way caffeine or moda does. Basically no downsides except some loss of membrane on the inside of the lip and on the gum.
Nicotine in of itself isn't harmful, and while it is addictive, the addictive properties are highly reliant on the speed at which it reaches the brain. Vaping and smoking makes it hit the brain extremely fast, which is why they are so addictive. Chewing gums, patches and pouches take much longer and IMO are barely addictive at all.
I'll probably quit or take a break when I start bulking in the gym due to the reduction in appetite.

@@vincer7824 I don't personally get any discomfort in the throat from pouches, whereas I did from gum. With cigarettes it's not only smoke. It's tar and a bunch of other nasty stuff. Not to mention tobacco bio-accumulates heavy metals. It's terrible for several reasons.
Vapes don't actually produce steam. They vaporize glycerol. Nicotine is safe, and glycerol seems safe. The flavorings are risky though. If you get a bad batch you might need a lung transplant.
