Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid Review: The Sporty Plug-In Crossover
The Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid is an intriguing plug-in hybrid crossover that injects some sporting flair into the often mundane world of electrified family haulers. With striking coupe-like styling and a potent powertrain, it aims to bring excitement to eco-conscious driving. But does the reality live up to the premise?
Fiery Style, But At A Cost
There's no mistaking the Formentor's aggressive, modern design. The swooping roofline, dynamic creases, and angular lighting give it a properly athletic appearance that sets it apart from conventional crossovers. Upscale trim levels with matte paint amplify the sporty vibe even further. However, that rakish shape compromises practicality, with a cramped rear seat and merely adequate 345-liter cargo area once you account for hybrid battery intrusion.
Frisky Performance, With A Catch
Cupra offers two e-Hybrid powertrain variants. The base 201-horsepower version hits 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, while the 241-hp model I tested cuts that time to 7.0 seconds flat. Both use a 1.4-liter turbo four-cylinder and 12.8-kWh battery, with the latter achieving an estimated 34 miles of electric range.
On a favorite twisty road, the Formentor e-Hybrid revealed its split personality. With the electric motor's abundant torque, it exhibited feisty off-the-line acceleration. The sports-tuned suspension kept body motions nicely controlled, and steering was precise if a tad numb on center. However, push too hard and you'll encounter unmistakable torque steer as the front tires struggle for traction exiting corners. An artificial exhaust note also drones in sportier driving modes.
A Mild Thrill At Best
While certainly more involving than most plug-in crossovers, the Formentor e-Hybrid's driving dynamics still left me wanting more genuine thrills. It simply doesn't deliver the sort of outright performance or handling poise you'd expect given its racy looks. Blame must go to the front-wheel-drive layout and lack of a purer, more powerful powertrain option.
Sporty Style Without The Sacrifices
At the same time, the Formentor makes fewer compromises than a traditional hot hatch in terms of ride quality and everyday livability. The cabin offers a decent amount of space for a vehicle its size, with impressive material quality and generous standard equipment. You'll also enjoy effortless cruising capability and electric driving for most daily errands.
Ultimately, the Cupra Formentor e-Hybrid feels like an intriguing, design-led alternative for buyers seeking some sporty personality without the harsh tradeoffs of a conventional performance vehicle. It won't satisfy enthusiasts, but its racy looks and punchy hybrid powertrains could appeal to those prioritizing style and mild thrills over outright speed or practicality. Just be prepared to pay a premium for those emotional indulgences.
