  • Mustafa finishes a visit to my home with a third number, singing and improvising around one of his own compositions, based on some of the quatrains of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Amazing oud, amazing vocals, amazing Mustafa!

    The guitar is in fact a cut down version of the oud. The guitar was introduced to europe (spain) as an adaptation of the oud during the Islamic reign in spain.

    @smokingblunts1 No. Mustafa is Egyptian. But he plays lots of Turkish music as well as other music from other places.

    @AbsurdBrane You are most welcome. Mustafa is one of the world's finest oud players, and I feel honored that he is willing to drop by as a friend and share his music with me, and with the TH-cam world.

    @crash9321 Thanks, on Mustafa's behalf and my own. I have nothing but the highest regard for Mustafa, certainly one of the greates young oud players alive. And a good singer who gets real emotion into the songs he sings.

    There's a good chance that Mustafa will be performing in many places during the coming months and years. When he is back in Cairo for more than a few days, I will try to find out more about his long term residence ideas. He is a man on the move.

    @wazzapgangsta Thanks for the comment. Hopefully Mustafa will be back in Cairo soon, and we can perhaps do more of this.

    @TheFolksinger - I actually looked it up after your last reply, and learn how it and the fretted European lute are offshoots of the same ancient instrument. I really like those (forgive my musical ignorance) in between non-chromatic intervals that he's able to play on the oud.

  • @TheFolksinger
    @TheFolksinger  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Hoopermazing Those intervals are integral to the maqams, which are sort of like scales, but which at least to me seem much more complex and make use of half flatted notes in many ways. Makes the music exciting as well as beautiful.

  • @TheFolksinger
    @TheFolksinger  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @crash9321 Thanks again. I have the greatest respect fo Mustafa, certainly one of the finest young oud players in the world. And a fine singer as well, projecting and injecting deep emotion into the words of his song.

  • @TheFolksinger
    @TheFolksinger  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Hoopermazing Actually, I assumed that. But for the general public, the oud may seem to some as a new instrument, though it is indeed historically old.

  • @TheFolksinger
    @TheFolksinger  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @elnivan I agree entirely. I am waiting for Mustafa to return to Egypt (presently he is studying and performing in Beirut) so we can do some more like this. That is, if he agrees. Cheers for Mustafa!

    @cafeespresso99 I guess there is a lot of truth in this historical linkage. Nice that now both exist and function quite differently.

    @TheFolksinger tried posting a translation for wahech007's message but it fails to appear...Here's one last try:
    ghinaaa asilll --> authentic / traditional singing
    w 3azeff la yo3laaa 3lehhh --> and playing (of instrument) which cannot be surpassed
    alla yi7mik ya rabb --> may Allah protect you

  • @Hoopermazing
    @Hoopermazing 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    @TheFolksinger I'm more or less unfamiliar with that instrument.
    In fact, a first glance, I thought that it was a craviola. However, I was speaking (tongue in cheek) from the perspective of a guitarist with the headstock comment.

    95% ...he is not typically blind - like genetically 100%... what happened is his father was exposed to Israeli chemical weapons which caused damage to his DNA, therefore Mustafa and his brother Modhammed both have a kind of 95% blindness. It can be cured with a special new type of surgery.
