Followed your clear instructions exactly and got the remote working again, after weeks of frustration. Thanks! Keep the good work! This is what TH-cam and the internet should be for.

Weeks? For me it was years! Just the button to skip forward a bunch wasn't working, and over the years I probably wasted hours waiting while it more slowly advanced. Works perfect now!

Six years later, your video is still helping folks. My remote wasn't working, I assumed it needed new batteries (even though it has occasionally *momentarily* not worked in the past, requiring just a quick slap against the table to resume working fine-- I'd assumed the batteries had occasionally wiggled a tiny bit out of allignment or something, but now I think it was the dirty inner workings), but new batteries didn't fix it. Anyway I watched a couple vids on TH-cam, wondered if it was worth the trouble and decided to go for it. Wasn't sure where my guitar picks were so a slender, small straighthead screwdriver worked fine. Yes it was greasy inside. Washed the rubber keyboard in Dawn liquid dish soap (for handwashing dishes) as I didn't need or want a rosemary-mint-smelling remote control. I used Kleenex instead of Q-tips, just feeling lazy not wanting to search for the Q-tips, Kleenex semi-soaked in rubbing alcohol for the circuit board and for the post-washed keyboard. After drying the circuit board, the rubber keyboard and the plastic cover with Kleenex I then placed them in front of my fan for a few minutes to assure it was dry. Snapped it together. Voila. Ready for Frasier or StarTrek or whatever. Thank you for a clear, concise, sensible tutorial. Way better than ordering a new remote online or shopping for one, along with having to wait for it. And spending the money. Thanks!

Have a 20 year old Yamaha theater remote that the power button quit. I looked into replacement to the tune of 35.00. Followed your suggestion, as soon as I took it apart the power button area on circuit was black. I cleaned it all and now it works like new! Thanks so much!

Thanks dial2fast! Yea! Following this video fixed my tv remote that has been such a pain even when it was new (3 years.) upon opening the remote case, I found oily material on the circuit board and the rubbery button sheet, which I presume was applied intentionally during manufacturing. I wondered if it was a good idea to take this off with soap and water followed by q-tip and alcohol. It turns out it was VERY good to do that.

Before washing, it might be an idea to place the plug in the sink incase something important separates from the rubber and gets washed away.

I use CBC QD Contact Cleaner. I bought a can a couple of decades ago for various projects (cleaning off residue from exploded batteries, etc.). So a can will last you forever. Spray some in a disposable cup and dip a Q-tip in it.

I'm usually disappointed when following these "DIY fixit" video on YT but this worked perfectly. Remote control now fully functional after half hours work. The hardest part was prying apart the casing. In my case it was some hidden screws under a stuck on panel (logitech harmony 350). You also really do need a plastic pry tool like a guitar pick. I managed to get by with an old credit card. Thanks to the uploader of this video.

Tip to add: I've had to do this many times. I started about 5 years ago to get into the habit of keeping the remotes face down on a coffee table, night stand, wherever. It stops the dust from settling into the buttons. I have many devices that use a remote and some might sit for a week without being used, or even longer. They stay so much cleaner if you keep them face down on the table top!
I've done this often with many cordless phones too!

    • @Warzau
      @Warzau 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I actually leave mine face up for the simple fact that once the batteries leaked in a remote and it spilled all over the innards. So if I do forget another time. I’d they do leak it leaks always from the board.

Thanks once again

Hi, so it finally worked! I did abuse the case of the remote, but that's ok. I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, and dried it with a Q- tip. It didn't work for awhile. Maybe it took a little while to dry completely. I pushed the button of my remote and it worked! I thank you for teaching patience doing this. Well, I'll try other things in the future since I learned some patience while doing this. Thanks again! 👍 🙂

It would probably be easier to do the opposite of the video and fit the rubber pad into the front cover first, and then with that facing up, lower the rear of the remote down on to it.

Thanks for giving me the courage to crack open my remote control. Because I can tell you the worst fear a DIY person has is to open something up and a bunch of springs shootout..... although there were actually a couple of springs near The Battery area, they pretty much stayed in place. I'm put all of the components under warm sudsy water and afterwards I dunk them in rubbing alcohol..... dried everything off, and what temperature to put everything back in the remote the same way it was when I took it out. I must say that my remote now works better than new. thanks again for your video

    Hi...Thanks for video.
My remote was really stubborn and very tight. I would get my old credit card in but if it slipped out it would close again. I found that putting 3 more credit cards in a downward angle, all around did help but still couldn't pull apart or keep it open.
So I just twisted halves to look for debris or mess on circuit board...and yes...it was sticky syrup or something. I wiped off both the rubber buttons and the circuit board with an alchohol wipe. Then blew it dry and snapped it back together.
    😁it works👍
Haier TV remote HTR-D09B for my Haier TV stopped working. The CH-&- and volume buttons should not move cursor on INPUT or Menu to select functions or make changes.

Thanks for posting this very helpful video. After tipping over half a glass of beer I didn’t realize that the remote got wet as well. The next day when I hit the power button nothing happened and that’s when I noticed it was sticky. I figured it was fried and I would need to buy a new remote. Day 3 I thought maybe just try and clean it really good so I watched the video and followed your advice. There was one screw in the battery area and 6 more smaller ones inside. After a thorough cleaning and trying to remember how to get it back together I could not believe my eyes when I hit the power button and saw the red light come on. It works perfectly and I’m not sure why. It should have been fried.

A Medium weight guitar pick works great for separating the two plastic halves. Jam it in at the half way point along the long side and then once it's in, slide up and down to separate the clips. Works great and no marring of the plastic that would result from using a screwdriver.

@Soccy Rivas ...I looked at repair kits online. Many used a silver based paint to restore the contacts. But I also saw a repair paint made with carbon. It seemed like carbon was what the manufacturer had originally used on the contacts of my remote, since I could see a black film clearly present on most of them. (Not so much on the faulty buttons, however.) So, after washing the keypad and cleaning the circuit board with alchohol and cotton swabs. I scraped dust from a charcoal sketching pencil onto those contacts that had little or no black film (the same buttons that weren't working/barely worked). Once I coated the contacts with a fine black layer, I snapped my remote back together. It works wonderfully now. I'm sure the professional repair paints might last longer than my improvised solution, but the remote works like new again, and it didn't cost me anything but a little time and effort to do it. (I'm glad I didn't try to use acetone. The alchohol worked perfectly. Good advice!)

Mine is a Shaw Direct / Arris IRC 600 Remote Control
Some of the buttons were sticky due to ?? At a guess pancake syrup!
It was not too difficult to unsnap the main body after removing the two screws located in the battery compartment. They are tiny Phillips head screws and were deeply recessed.
I used an Exacto Chisel blade to pry the case apart far enough to insert a plastic putty/ silicone spreader into the side slot on one side. With a little twisting effort the case pops apart .
Inside is a circuit board and a moulded Silicone Button Board!
I took pictures of all the parts .

Thanks for the video. I tried this with my LG magic remote. It still doesn’t work that well. Any pointers.

I've read somewhere the silicone used by all manufacturers, leach oil over time, and they weren't baked enough in the oven during processing. I used to think it was dirt going inside.

What would you use to paint the black back onto the rubber contacts on the remote? Some of the buttons have lost that black satin finish paint they once had. Thanks

I didn't have any nail polish remover but I used a Unversal Adhesive Remover Wipe.

My original remote for a Samsung smart TV 2013 (bought in january 2014) became so laggy (in 2021-2022) and a strange feeling when pressing the buttons.
I opened the remote up in a similar way as in this video. And I found the reason why remote was laggy: it was WET inside! No idea how that liquid appeared there. Maybe moist or something.
    So here's what I did:
1 - used q tips to remove as much liquid as possible from all parts.
2 - washed all parts except for the circuit board, with dish water
3 - helped the parts to dry faster
4 - putted all parts together when it all was dry enough
    WORKED PERFECT!
Now this remote is not laggy at all. My TV feels "fast" again! And no need to buy a replacement remote!
This was the first time ever that I've opened up a TV remote and I don't have the perfect tools. I used what I could find. Sadly a few small plastic pieces fell off but seems like that was not very important pieces. That remote is from early 2014. So I'm happy that I could fix it!
Also, I don't have that strong alcohol. Wish I've had. But it worked fine without it this time. And no idea where to buy it.
I would only recommend doing this if there's true problems with the remote. I got a few other remotes but those work great! It's always a risk when trying to open them up that you scratch the plastic or sone small plastic part will fall off.
And one more thing: the plastic part where you will connect the batteries, on my remote you can remove that metal piece between where these two batteries belong. So remove it before cleaning that plastic part!
Might be a good thing to buy that "iFixit toolkit" for smartphones and computers so you got a tool to open up the remote. Or a similar toolkit with another name.
And once again: if your remote works great and is pretty clean, don't open it up!
But what I'm thinking of is the best way to clean the remote after X months/years when it got much dust and stuff on it. How to do it the best way without opening it up?
