    We welcome back Yuri Goloubev this week in his second interview with us, all about double bass set up. Yuri has quite a unique setup and tells us about why he likes to set up in that way, what strings he likes, and about his basses. There’s also an excellent solo performance at the end of the video where Yuri performs ‘If I should lose you’ by Ralph Rainger.

    Yes, very informative, namely suggestion about flatness of fingerboard,string higher

    Very helpful video. I'm about to call my local luthier to have setup work done. This confirms to me that 7-10 mm string height (G to E) at the end of the fingerboard is maybe just a LITTLE high for practicing the upper register.

    Even though I play electric fretless bass, I love to listen to acoustic bassists play and discuss music and set-up nuances. Great interview on an excellent channel, cheers!✌🏾👍🏽🤗

    How can I communicate with Yuri. /
    Yuri has some great concepts regarding the fingerboard the instrument set up and that is ultra important to maximizing playing ability

    Wouldn't "negative slope" make the bass unplayable with the bow?

    Hi, awesome video and channel! Is the string height he's talking about measured at the end of the fretboard or at the 12th fret?

    • @DiscoverDoubleBass
      @DiscoverDoubleBass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For double bass it's always measured at the end of the fingerboard.
      }Thanks for watching :-)

    Does Yuri always sit when playing and does sit vs stand make him adapt differently??

      I'm afraid I don't know, but I've only ever seen him play seated.

    Sir. I should ask a question out of the subject. Sorry. Are you still using D'addario Zyex strings? Your interview was ringing true to me. Do you still reccommend them? Thank you in advance. Best regards. This also great video as usual. :))

    • @DiscoverDoubleBass
      @DiscoverDoubleBass  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I'm not using Zyex at the moment but would still recommend them. I normally use Spirocore weich or Evah Pirazzi Weich... but the D'Addario helicore and Zyex range are superb.
      In this video Yuri recommends D'Addario Helicore Pizz and Spiro weich as well. Both are great options!

      I got it. Normally I use Thomastik too. But medium tension. I want to switch light model. I started 2 years ago to play double bass. Altough I have big tinnitus; my intonation is good. Zyex strings sounds to me birght. And I need it. Apperantly I missed Yuri's recommends on video. Thank you so much again. You are saving my life. :))

    How do you know when your bass is to small for you?

    • @DiscoverDoubleBass
      @DiscoverDoubleBass  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Instrument size is partially a personal preference, so it's hard to say. It might be that you are not getting enough sound out of a smaller bass, or perhaps it's less comfortable than a regular 3/4 size instrument. For the vast majority of adults a 3/4 is a great option, but you do also get some playing on fractional size instruments.
