Here is a great romantic composition for horn and piano. Julius Röntgen is often referred to as “the Dutch Brahms”. Being a lifetime-friend of Edvard Grieg, he visited Norway frequently. The two composers made long hike-trips in the “Jotunheimen” mountains, where Röntgen wrote down the folksongs he heard. He composed a suite over these folksongs, originally for violin and piano, later also for Orchestra. In 1903, he wrote a version with 5 movements for horn and piano for the well-known Vienna hornist Louis Savart. I started playing it from the manuscript, which lies in the community museum in The Hague. John Smit made the first printed edition; I helped revising it before print. What a pleasure to hear this work, and to hear it played so phenomenally well!
