Fixing a stuck ignition key in a 2007 Jeep Wrangler

- When I was in Park, I couldn't remove the key from the ignition switch. Doing a bit a reading and digging around the transmission shifter I found out my problem. I had broken a piece of the shifter indexing that lodged itself into the Park position, thus preventing the ignition switch from releasing the key.

This was helpful but my fix I learned at '"Jeep Liberty Shift Interlock cable and Gear shift adjustment" the gear shift adjustment. Thanks for the help.

Yes, I’m having the same problem. The jeep went in the garage last week for an MOT. There was no issues with the key being stuck in the ignition until they had it- I posted the keys through their letterbox. The problem happened while it was with them, and they are now denying responsibility so i guess I’ll have to sort it out myself.
Yesterday I found this video and will be tearing apart the console this weekend. Gratefully the shifter cable works and I can still drive the Jeep, just have to disconnect the battery every time I stop to keep from draining it. Have to be very careful so as not to have her stolen. Thank you. What is that second cable called?
When i put my jeep in park the shifter hits really hard and the black piece gets pushed out

On your dash did it register it was in park...did your park indicator on your dash light up?
Yes. The transmission was in Park and the showed that it was in park.
What was the black plastic part that broke? Mine is doing this too..first it was stuck in park, then it was loose and disconnected. I replaced the linkage bushing, but now I can't put it in park and the key gets stuck in the ignition. Do I need to replace the whole shift assembly or is there a way to get that black plastic lever to function again? I did find a small black piece of broken plastic like the one you had

I've thinking of installing on fancy pieces to the center console but before I do that, I want to remove it and clean everything. Is it save to use soap and water on the inner parts?
luis alvarez I used soap and water on all the plastic pieces of the center console that I removed. The section that is still in the center with the gear shift lever could be scrubbed as well, I wouldn't get there mechanism underneath soaking wet, but if it was dried off right away, it shouldn't cause any problems.
