I live in the Algarve, and I would say the weather and the affordable cost of living with regard to everything except housing are major pros. A major con not often talked about is the low build quality and mold and damp issues. The mold here is next level, and not just in old country houses. It is a problem in expensive new builds, in apartments, in condos, in houses. It's a huge issue.

It's definitely a struggle! I hear from people who have lived or still own properties in other coastal parts of the world as well and they report the same. Surely we'll find a solution to this (hopefully sooner rather than later)!

@@livinginthealgarve The issues here are much worse unfortunately than in many other coastal areas around the world. I definitely recommend coming here and spending a lot of time checking it out if you are considering buying property here. The lack of insulation, proper foundations, modern roofing, and heating and cooling that function well are ubiquitous. It has shocked me how bad it is even in high priced real estate. I love the Algarve! It's beautiful, but this is a really serious issue here.

Yes, I've extensive civil engineering and construction experience and in my initial investigation of housing in the Algrave I was shocked at the lack of environmentally compatible construction of residential housing even at the $1MM level.

I have a place in Carvoiero which I love because it does not empty in the winter, one pro I am very happy is that Portuguese people are so friendly and warm, if you try and speak their language they really like it even if, like me , you are hopeless, I have had so many conversations where I speak in Portuguese and they speak in English.

I’ve been living in Portugal for over 2 1/2 years having moved here from California. I started in the north for a few months then went to the Algarve lived in Tavira for a few months and then finally in Lisbon where I’ve been for almost 2 years. in the Algarve, I lived in Tavira during the winter and it was dead. I came here with my dog and thought to there is a nice town. It just felt like a ghost town to a big degree. I don’t wanna live in city Central Lisbon nor do I want to have to drive 2 1/2 hours to get here so I’ve decided my focus will be outside of bed near to Lisbon and that would be either Cascais and Estoril or comporta and Troia. Cascais and Estoril. are just about a half hour from Lisbon by train. They’re very well established communities year round, having been the home of exiled royalty, and a hotel that serves as the model for “casino Royale, “the James Bond movie. Comporta and Troia are newer on the scene, and getting very popular as they are about a half hour south of Lisbon. Troia is on a peninsula surrounded by water and they are attracting very wealthy and celebrities who wanna have an exclusive area on the beach but still be close to the city. I’m going to visit there soon and get a good sense of of it. I just find that these areas outside of Lisbon give you the best of both worlds with access to museums theater opera but as well as my medical care and other things that I’ve already established here but you don’t have to deal with the problems of Citi life. I like Algarve, but not as a place to live. I just find it a bit thin, especially in the winter.
