The Disputed History of the Hot Dog

  • We're breaking down the history of the hot dog for #NationalHotDogDay on this episode of Food History. Where do hot dogs come from? (It's surprisingly contentious.) What is in a hot dog? (It might not be as bad as you imagine.) And why do we call it a hot dog, anyway? (You'll have to watch the video.)
    Hot dogs may be as American as apple pie, but they could be German or Austrian as well. The history behind hot dogs is on the menu in this episode of Food History.

      This is the first I'm hearing about them. Does a white hot taste different than a normal hot dog?

    • @gregman2013
      @gregman2013 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do taste different, I don’t like them but a lot of people around here like them better than a traditional red hot dog.
      From Wikipedia: The white hot originated in the 1920s in Rochester's German community as a white and porky. It was originally a cheaper alternative to high-price red hot dogs, made of the less desirable meat parts and various fillers; in contrast, modern versions are made from quality meats and are generally sold at higher prices than common hot dogs.

    • @boundbythecurve
      @boundbythecurve 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MentalFloss Yeah they became popular during WWI because of meat shortages. They have more of a sausage taste and they're amazing. One of my favorite Rochester foods. I actually prefer them over most garbage plates (another Rochester, NY thing)

    There is also the hot dog roll in New Englsnd. It looks like a slice of bread folded over. In use, it is toasted or grilled in butter, the pooch inserted then yellow mustard, sweet relish and chopped onions are added, maybe also a dash of ketchup. The traditional drink is Coke or Pepsi, but equally good choices are Sprite and good strong gingetr ale. If you prefer, you can have it wit "bug juice". Hot dogs in the Philippines are special. Bright red in color. Really bright red. Looks radioactive. And they put them chopped up into spaghetti sauce like it is normal. Their spaghetti sauce is already half sugar, and now it has radioactive red chunks of hot dog mixed in. I always pass. And you can't find mustard in the country to put on a hot dog in a bun. I have to bring my own little packages of mustard that I rip off from a fast food joint if I want mustard over there. People look at that bright yellow stuff and have no idea of what I just squeezed on the dog.

    Slightly dissapointed you did not talk about the new-England Bun Variant. Traditional New-England hot dog rolls are longer than coney-island ones and are flat on both sides so you can spread butter on them and grill them, although that step is optional. it is claimed by some that they technically predate the coney-island bun, but may not have been the first to be used for hot-dogs as they were originally designed for clam strip rolls.
