Giant Shovelnose Ray

  • This Giant Shovelnose Ray (Glaucostegus typus) is a long time resident at Mangrove Beach at Jiigurru, Lizard Island on the Northern Great Barrier Reef.
    On our recent September 2022 expedition we were lucky enough to find the animal in a relaxed mood and were able to get some close quarters video of this magnificent beast in the late afternoon light.
    These animals are not dangerous, having neither sharp teeth nor poisonous spines. They feed on molluscs and other invertebrates over sandy areas at night.

    why is their not a breeding program for this animal?
