    I bought the 500 when they were first available in the US. I am on my 3rd box of 1800 5mm dominoes. Essentially I have used just shy of 6000 5 mm dominoes and that equates to over 10,000 5 mm mortises. I primarily build furniture and the 500 is plenty adequate. I have never wanted for a larger mortiser.
    If I was building heavy oak doors or enormous conference tables and maybe even doing timber framing I would get the XL.
    There really should be no question as to which to get. If you always build really big and heavy get the XL. If you build furniture out of 4/4 and 5/4 stock the 500 is absolutely big enough.
    AND as mentioned in the video the XL is heavy, the 500 is no feather weight. My experience is that the easier the tool is to lug around the shop the more likely you will be to use it. I seriously had no idea that I would use the 500 as much as I have. Oh, and one more thing. I'm still using the same 5 mm bit that came with the 500. These are quality machines built to last a very long time.
    I think what I am trying to say is buy the machine that you will use daily, not the one that you might need on occasion if you are trying to decide which one to buy.

    Great information, thank you for another great video! When faced with the decision, I ended up buying the XL and aftermarket converters from Seneca Woodworking to let me cut smaller mortices and closer to top surface (Imperial standoffs). As you point out, I can't cut some mortices referencing the bottom surface like I could with the smaller unit - but I can do almost everything else. The Domino is very expensive, but it really is a game changer in the shop.

      @@chrisdonner2910 Thanks Chris! If I was doing production cabinet work I would probably get myself a 500 as well. For my volume and type of use, the 700 with the smaller bit adaptor has worked quite well. Which one to buy? It’s easy, you buy the DF 700 and then you purchase the adapter from Infinity Tools that allows you to use the smaller bits for the smaller size dominos but of course you gotta get the set of smaller bits too but yeah, that’s what I have done and now I can use the full size from smallest to largest using the 700 🤙🏻🤙🏻

  • @Harko-

    I use the 500, and as I mainly do smaller work, the compactness and light weight is really helpful. Although I do see how reinforcing a joint after gluing can also be very attractive.

    • @11211lcb
      @11211lcb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I build a lot of drawers, hundreds, out of 1/2" Baltic birch stock with rabbited corners. After assembly I plunge mortises and add dominos in the corners to reinforce.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are reinforcing a joint after gluing you could do it with dowels. It means you do not have to be super accurate just drill straight through and then put dowel through.
      Obviously a DF700 is far more versatile than using dowels.

    • @11211lcb
      @11211lcb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bighands69 Absolutely, you can reinforce joints with dowels and as you commented you do not have to be super accurate. With a Domino it is very easy to be super accurate. FWIW I was on a job site assisting with building the cabinets and drawers for a kitchen and 2 bath room remodel. The kitchen drawers were all 3/4" DT's in maple. There were a few drawers that were too large in height to effectively use DT's. These were recycle and wast bin drawers. In this case I used the Domino to reinforce the rabbit joints. The home owner had another contractor, during the same time period, build the drawers for the bathroom renovations, 31 drawers to be exact. Those drawers were reinforced with dowels. Before those bathroom drawers were installed, the home owner compared the waste bin and recycle bin drawers, reinforced with Dominos, and the bathroom drawers reinforced with dowel pins. All of the drawers for the bathrooms were reordered to be built again and reinforced with Dominoes. This sounds shocking but in this case money was no object and the appearance of the domino over the dowel was the clear winner for this customer. If you own the Domino 500 make the most of it.

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@11211lcb
      Main problem when using dowels is that people do not use enough glue on the dowel its self and when only dowel has glue on it it means it will come apart.
      My grander made tables and chairs over 60 years ago with dowels and they still have not come apart.
      If you own the DF500 you could combine it will through drilled dowels for extra support if you desire.
      My point is not that dowels are better. I have never had issues with dowels, domino's or biscuits. They all work.

    Always love your videos. I am currently shopping for a Domino for an upcoming barn dining table I want to make and am trying to figure out whether the largest tenon that the 500 can accommodate would be big enough for 1.5" - 2" thick breadboards on the end of the table or if I would need to step up to the 700. I was leaning towards buying the 700 because I know that you can buy an adapter from Seneca that allows you to use 500 bits but when I saw in your video that the 700 couldn't do thinner materials (bit would be past center on thinner material) I went back into this-or-that mode. Thoughts?

    I'm considering the MAFELL DDF40, what are your thoughts on the duo doweller. Excellent video by the way, I have the DOMINO XL and am looking at the df500 or the ddf40, would really appreciate your input

    • @BischBaschBosch
      @BischBaschBosch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love my DDF40 but am considering getting a Domino as well. The DDF40 excels for carcassing cupboards, units and shelves etc. The Domino, particularly the large one would be better if you want more structural joints for doors or window frames etc. You can of course get large cutters and dowels for the DDF40 that offer a more structural solution but the large Domino would still be the better option - aside from actual mortise and tenon joinery of course. So, depends what your needs/work is Simon.

      An alternative would be Mafell biscuit jointer. With this approach you could use standard wooden biscuit abut also use metal and plastic biscuits.
      The Mafell DDF40 is better for doing construction grade projects than the likes of the domino xl.

      Blade prices are nothing if you are doing enough commercial work with them. A table could sold for £1000 or $1000 and you could do several of them with the one blade.
      If people had better accounting and finances they would understand the true value and not be so quick to think things are expensive or cheap.
      I know people that think that Lamello connectors are expensive and when you talk to them you realize that they are using them in projects that are worth thousands of dollars which makes not sense.

    Still don’t understand the perception of this tool as something special. Loose tenons aren’t unique to Festool domino. Bead lock, dowels and router mortise are all the same functional joint. The domino is a high priced uni-tasker, I’ll take a drill and doweling jig or a router mortising jig any day. From a price and multi function standpoint the drill or router have WAY more utility than the domino.
