  • New York Times Bestselling author Amanda Montell discusses her book “The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality.” Magical thinking can be broadly defined as the belief that one’s internal thoughts can affect unrelated events in the external world. Amanda’s prevailing message is one of hope, empathy, and ultimately forgiveness for our anxiety-addled human selves. If you have all but lost faith in our ability to reason, Amanda aims to make some sense of the senseless. To crack open a window in our minds, and let a warm breeze in. To help quiet the cacophony for a while, or even hear a melody in it.

Really great talk, thank you kindly for uploading. All the biases were familiar but it was still very stimulating as many were expresed with novel nuances, especially in the context of modern life. Amanda’s honesty in relating them to her own life made it more engaging too.

I wonder if the whole “what’s your purpose” movement is just another magical thinking exercise. At some point, I just want to feed my kids became not enough.

I still that having a sense of purpose is important in life, but the obsession with a predestined purpose is probably unhelpful. It's like the idea that we must find our predestined soulmate.

I watched the entire interview. As an Information Scientist who has focused on Psychology and Sociology for the past 22 years, I find myself puzzled and scratching my head. Where to start to comment? Chuck Erik Erickson for openers. Plenty of potential. Beyond that, I dunno.
