    I watched this whole video shaking my head, still marveling that the builder who could remove their ego and listen to the needs of the customer found the sailors who have the experience and research to know what is really needed, and these two formed a partnership that is producing a watershed type boat. I cannot wait to see it, but I think, like the iPhone, even if you don’t buy this particular boat, the changes will trickle down into other manufacturers’ designs and the entire sailing community will benefit.

    I have seen a number of informal studies have suggested that induction cooking is quicker and more efficient than the gas. That being said it is always good to have a back up gas for the grill especially for the outside cooking. I would do induction inside and gas on the outside grill. That is how I set up my overland truck.

    Never even been on a real sail boat like yours but thoroughly enjoy your build out thought process. Induction cooktop…again. Had one installed when we remodeled our kitchen. Loved it, it it failed after about 6 years. Originally $4,000(US). Bad burnet unit could not be replaced-outdated. New cooktop $2,000 and better technology. Still like it but not at much as original unit. Great for my non-floating home, but (not with standing it not meeting your electrical schema) I’m not convinced it’s suitable for your boat being offshore with no service technician or easy replacement available. I do believe your gas solution is a better world-traveling solution. Much prefer electricity, but not convinced it’s ready for your environment. Best of luck in your being able to watch the build. And, I believe there is an impending Birthday! Happy birthday!

    I had to make a coffee and settle in to watch this. Brilliant tech talk. It's music really. Qualified commentary on a new build... Energy management is everything. In a house, ya just hit the switch and power is there. You are building a life support pod really, that sails... You need the capability to generate, store and measure. It's a survival thing... Love the galley... RR2 is going to be amazing...

    Congratulations Ruby Rose 2 is going to be fantastic. I vote for induction cooktop. Less time filling gas bottles and less fumes and heat in the saloon. And yes still keep the gas bbq. Have fun and enjoy. I really enjoy your informative videos and learning from your experience.

    To me, and others, this video was not dry. It does show your dedication to detail and provides a bit of insight into how you made your selections. Do you plan to do any cold weather/water cruising (like Uma, or Ran)? If so, will you have a heating system? Insulated hulls, etc.? Did you ever consider a soft wing sail for your main?

    • @sailingrubyrose
      @sailingrubyrose  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This boat will have reverse cycle air con. So it will have heating.
      Probably no wing sail as we will be working with an asymmetric to get the best VMG

  • @edwardhewer8530
    @edwardhewer8530 3 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    My two cents. Go the induction, you can still keep the gas BBQ, but indoors induction is fantastic, especially if you are going to have 11KWH battery pack. Really like your choices as well as the deck matting. That looks really interesting for any boat.

    • @world-traveller6949

      Also using gas inside creates more heat and moisture is a biproduct of burning gas. Add to that, that is it possible to run out of gas and not have the ability to refill emidiately.
      We just spent 4 days in th3 caribean without gas -> no coffee in the morning and no warm danner either :)
      Loved the presentation though.

    • @Prisma591
      @Prisma591 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, induction - especially if you are going to hot countries where cooking on gas is so uncomfortable. Gas is not quicker, either. Listen to your wife!

    • @snoopybluejeans
      @snoopybluejeans 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Prisma591 _ Induction cooks much faster and it doesn't let off heat. Best thing for boats.

    • @norarivkis2513
      @norarivkis2513 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Induction reduces the risk of fire on board, which is its biggest advantage. Open flames when you're bouncing around on the waves are not the best idea if you've got a viable alternative, and you do.

    Not dry at all, in fact, very useful. I'm sure many people appreciate the details about why certain options were chosen and others weren't as it may help them spec their boat (or know what to look for in a boat). I find it enlightening... also looking forward to all the info in the future regarding electronics and how that all works. I'm not ready to go sailing yet, but when I do, I'm really looking forward to an electric setup like yours... seems perfect IMO.

      I thought they were just standard upgrades that anyone would choose if they can afford.
      More powerful engines mmmmm that’s a tough one especially as there is very little weight penalty.
      Genset obvs not required with alternators that size.
      Huge lithium battery bank probably would be on most people’s list if they could afford.
      Carbon coach roof mmmmm that’s a tough one , are there any disadvantages?
      Bigger TV - probably not a huge weight consideration there!
      The best sails vs not the best sails - not a difficult choice if you plan to sail a lot and can afford.
      A very decent sized tender, or one that is 20cm longer.
      It would be more revealing to know what serious options you didn’t choose and why. All you have done is tried to justify the ‘need’ for getting the best. I’m sure Seawind have thrown them in for free anyway on the back of this publicity deal / promomertial (if that’s even a word!).
      I would like to see more stuff that I would have half a chance of fixing in remote places. That is what serious sailors factor in. There’s a hell of a lot of gadgets performing essential jobs that will fail, hopefully not on some remote pacific island.

    • @AliasJimWirth

      @@abbbee8918 I think that is my point. As example: by choosing 200A alternators they can say no to a genset. But I think I have a right to appreciate Nick and Theresa and all they have done. Their choices were not all about money nor about obvious choices. I do agree with you on their reliance on electronic based devices. That caught my attention too. I trust mechanical things, often, more than a digital alternative, because of experiences. But I must admire anyone who puts so much effort into research, like they have, because it seems so uncommon today. Even if they make some mistakes. Thank you for responding. I totally appreciate you and your opinion.

      @@AliasJimWirth Don’t forget this is their life!
      Most people their age are earning a living and raising a family which means greater priorities, and obviously leaves little time to research this extensively - hats off to them for producing such a valuable resource and at least getting others to consider all these important factors when choosing a boat. Educated customers is the way forward.
      We have to realise that the manufacturers are there to build boats for us, not to try and sell us their boats.

    Dry? not a bit. Confirmed gearhead here, I love this stuff. I think the configuration is spot on for YOUR needs...and you guys are building her to fit those needs, so all can the naysayers can choose their stuff for them.
    I find myself nodding in agreement with the energy production choices, and the weight you save by eliminating a genset is a big chunk o' iron that wont be there. I wouldn't want plastic counters in my home, either. That is a no brainer.
    All in all I love it and can't wait for the build to begin. Makes me wish I was young again and doing this instead of planning "the last house build" for our retirement...actually I couldn't do what you guys don. too many toys with wheels and tools that I simply cannot give up.

    As someone who plans on getting a cat when I retire, I thoroughly welcome vids like this and enjoy them immensely. I am still a few years away from making the transition from a land lubber to a worldwide cruiser such as yourselves, but I appreciate the knowledge folks can glean from your previous experiences in a mono hull to a cat. Not everyone will agree with your choices, and that is perfectly fine. I value the education, whether I agree with it all or not. Keep posting what you feel like posting and I will watch. Maybe one day in the not so distant future we can anchor up nearby and swap stories over a cold one.

    My favourite moment so far is at 5:06 and about 5:19 when Nick is talking VERY earnestly about battery banks and power load and solar panels and Terysa looks straight into the camera as if to say..."INSERT CAPTION HERE"...."See what I put up with?" "He had a lot of coffee this morning." "I have laundry to do." "He doesn't seem to know we only have so much power in those camera batteries." "Maybe we could power the boat with his mouth." "Someday, someday, I'll be able to talk on one of these tech episodes." Sorry. It was just a fun moment in the episode. Good expressions. Now to continue with watching...

    Ever think about adding a retractable, small wind power generator (500-1000 w) for those "inevitable" cloudy days that go on for days on anchor? As an emergency back-up if something happens to engines... bad fuel... etc.

      @@PreacherwithoutaPulpit Yeah. All of that is true, but it would suck to be in the middle of the ocean and NOT have electrical power. I think I could deal with a little noise, vibration, and inconvenience if it was my ONLY source of power. Also, I'm not talking about main power. This would be a backup to the backup. Solar power first level, if that fails (on cloudy days), then dual engine charging with 200 amp alternators. IF BOTH OF THOSE fail, then pull out the wind power generator out of the locker and set it up. Nick is probably correct that it is NOT worth the hassle of dragging one around for the possible 3 levels of failure. I haven't run the MTBF analysis on this scenario, but the batteries or AC transformers would probably fail first before those 3 levels of failure would occur. What can I say... I'm an engineer. We always like to have more options for that possible 3 sigma event. Remember Apollo 13?

    Thank you for the update. I believe you may want more solar and batteries. Remember you said it a bunch in this video alone. ("It is our home") so I believe you need to be as comfortable as possible. The Boat is already fast. So if the boat can't take a few extras it may not be the boat for you.
    But that's just my opinion.
    So Thank You so much for the update. Looking forward for more.
    Until next week,

    Thanks guys, I'm loving these tech videos.
    While cruising I'm hearing more and more folks ditching the plotters for tablets and laptops, including professionals like the people at 59north.
    Usually with arguments like better hardware and cheaper charts and more customizable for a lot less money.
    I'd love to hear your reasoning for getting your two new plotters.
    Thanks again for your great videos

    Two things to note that you may want to look into. Cruise and Comfort makes a 12v air conditioner that people use on their vans. The LG sidekick washer dryer uses less power. No clue if those could work on a sailboat, just coming from the van build world. Some new stuff out there that are huge power savers.

    We had two 9 kilo gas bottles using a gas stove/grill/oven for cooking in the galley, a gas bbq and gas hot water. Each bottle lasted 6 weeks with 2 onboard full time and the occasional other couple for a week here and there over 8 months sailing last year. As long as you have airflow pushing the cooking fumes overboard heat was never a problem in the tropics. We also only had 1000w of solar and would have liked more but didn’t need more.

    Great choices, regarding solar panels my experience with flexible ones they are like lead acid batteries from the moment you start using them they start depreciating and quite quickly after about a years use. We have had lithium battery's for about 6 years great leap ahead you will be amazed how quickly they will re charge with your alternators, main problem is keeping the alternators cool we had to control the output. Cheers and good luck

    I was wondering, have you have thought about installing permanent cameras for your "TH-cam" recordings throughout the catamaran? one or two in the cockpit and salon set at standard angles that are accessible through your laptops for quick recordings on the fly. Also, you may consider a "NAS" (network-attached storage) for storing and working with your videos.

    Could feel your passion and excitement , it will be a near perfect catamaran or as close as you can get to one !!! One area that no one addresses being full time liveaboard sailors would be to set up a fitness circuit training set up. Ask a fitness equipment designer to customize a set of equipment that is easily packed , light weight and just as easily set up to allow you to do a proper workout to keep your exercise / fitness levels consistent !!! maybe a circuit training sequence that takes you around the boat and involves all the right set of exercises / etc.......so much attention to the kitchen, barbeques, layout for comfort and lifestyle, I think if I was to build I would dig deep into this area and design such a fitness circuit training set up on my boat - every other area of detail you have covered , am a big supporter of RR2 and Seawind !!!!

      @@sailingrubyrose Was the Leopard designed to release the raft down into the water, and the seas simply battered the hatch open? I can also see how that would make the raft accessible in the event of capsizing.

      @@petesheppard1709 The double doors is designed so that if the cat is capsized you can access the a raft from either way. Basically if you capsize you can get onto the bridge deck floor through the escape hatchs and get out the a life raft. Personally I would prefer the way seawind do it with a recess in the transom the you can reach over and just drag it straight into the water
