Been a lifelong terry Gilliam fan, just finally watched Brazil for the first time last night. All I can say is I have never been so floored, euphoric, and crushed all in one cinematic experience. This film has managed to capture a dream which I feel we all share, and the ending/ face of reality we all share is something that I hope is never lost. They can take our lives, but they can never capture the dream

I'm and expat living in Brasil, still surfing and young in a young country (I'm 67); I play this song in my head a lot, and there's still plenty of radicals here who haven't given up and aren't beaten down by a dangerously insane system. I haven't watched the film in decades--dystopian movies and books (think 1984) usually turn out bad for the poor schmuck who dares to dream, but loved it and can relate even more now that I'm living in a rundown shack at the beach. People tell me that I should be scared--lots of violence if you're poor. But I live in the moment and made it through Vietnam and quite a few near drownings, so I don't have a past and the future takes care of itself. Brazil, La, La, La, La, La, La.

There's certainly lines that can be drawn between the two, but Brazils message is ultimately more playful in its delivery.
I love 1984 as much as the next person, but it's excessive finger wagging is unashamedly dour. Brazil chooses to be less preachy in that sense. It's still a cautionary tale about bureaucracy, but it recognises the inherent stupidity within it more then its dangers.
