  • The city's ancient name is Lychnidos, which probably means "city of light". By 879 AD, the town was referred to as Ohrid which translated from most Slavic languages means "on hill". The city carries the epithet "Jerusalem of the Balkans" because of its spiritual and religious importance. In addition to the 365 Churches, you'll find a few mosques built by the Turks during their five centuries-long reign in the Balkans. Traces of life from the NEOLITHIC PERIOD, the IRON AGE, the CLASSICAL PERIOD (HELLENISTIC and ROMAN), and the EARLY CHRISTIAN PERIOD have been found in the city and in its most immediate surroundings which shows that the city was alive for a very long time. OHRID Lake together with its neighboring lake of PRESPA is more than 1 MILLION years old and they are two of the oldest in Europe. This is the reason why the city OHRID and OHRID Lake are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In the OLD BAZAAR STREET, there is a CHINAR TREE that is between 600 and 1100 years old and there you'll find everything that you can find in a modern shopping mall. It's worth mentioning that OHRID is famous for its PEARLS since the 1920s. There are two families that produce these everlasting jewels: TALEVI & FILEVI. Here are the links to their webshops:
    talevi.mk/
    ohridpearlwebshop.com/en/home-2/
At the MAIN SQUARE, you'll find the statues of St. Clement and St. Naum which are the patrons of the city, and can have the best FISH STEW for only 4.5 EUR overlooking the CITY PORT. You can also have a beautiful dinner in the famous restaurants in the OLD TOWN. These are the prices you may encounter:
    SHOPSKA SALAD: 4 EUR
    DRAFT BEER (500ml.): 4.5 EUR
    BURGER: 9.5 EUR & BACON & KAJMAK
PORK FILLET: 12.5 EUR & GORGONZOLA SAUCE
OHRID is also famous for its very pleasant climate. For example, in the peak of the summer season, during the months of July and August, the Average high temperature is 28 °C and the average low is 14 °C. It's much less hot than some other popular Mediterranean destinations.
There is a lot of accommodation along the Riviera, which stretches on the left side of the PORT, in the OLD TOWN, and everywhere in the city. For example, if you stay in the OLD TOWN you might expect to pay 50 EUR per night for an apartment. You may find chipper apartments if you want to but, you'll have to stay further away from the OLD TOWN or compromise comfort.
There are few beaches and beach bars in the OLD TOWN. Among the most famous are POTPESH & KANEO BEACH but, if you don't mind walking for 1km you'll find some of the best beach bars beyond the city Riviera, on the outskirts of the city. Other popular beaches on the lake include:
LAGADIN 10km away from the center of the city
PESHTANI 22km away from the center of the city
TRPEJCA 33km away from the center of the city
LJUBANISHTA 43km away from the center of the city
WATER QUALITY is 10/10 Keep in mind that the water is a bit colder from usual Mediterranean destinations.
You may enter the OLD TOWN from the LOWER or UPPER GATE. Together with the SAMUEL'S FORTRESS, they were built in the 11th AD but, there is evidence that the fortress was first built in the 4th BC by King Phillip the 2nd of Macedon.
250m below the fortress you will find one of the most significant Christian archeological sites in Europe and in the world PLAOSNIK. There is evidence that St. Paul the Apostle stopped and preached here in the 1st AD. The existing church of STS. CLEMENT & PANTELEIMON was built on the foundations of a 4th-century basilica.
Walking around the streets of the OLD TOWN you will notice the distinctive white OHRID Houses which were built between the 9th and 19th century AD. ROBEV FAMILY HOUSE (1827 AD) is one of those houses that is a true representative of that architecture.
200m away from the ROBEV FAMILY HOUSE you will find CHURCH ST. SOPHIA. Built in the 9th century AD on the foundations of the mid-6th century cathedral is a true representative of medieval architecture and art.
250m above the church you'll find the ANCIENT THEATRE built 200 BC and it represents a true marvel of the Hellenistic era in Ohrid. 200m above the Theatre you'll find a complex of the CHURCH of HOLY MARY PREYVLEPTOS (1295), a Museum of ICONS, OHRID ARCHBISHOPRIC (1018), and the CHURCH of STS. CONSTANTINE & HELENA.
Last, you may visit the CHURCH of ST. JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN (KANEO) and enjoy the view from its premises. It was built in the 13th AD and its 200m away from PLAOSHNIK.

Never swim at Lake Ohrid. One famous pianist & vlogged his family trip there showed snakes near the water's edge while waiting for other family members disembarked from their rented boat Take care.

We’ve been to Ohrid more than 10 times… we usualy go there for a couple of days when we go to Greece. Yes there are snakes occasionally and they live neer cane. We’ve have never encounter one and you should not be afraid becouse they are very small and they are not poisonous from what we have heard. So avoid cane in the water and basicaly you have 0,001% of seeing one. Even if you do see one, it ‘s going to get away from you. Even it doesent get away it can do nothing to you since it’s very small (less than 50 cm) and it’s not poisonous. So you should be swimming in Ohrid lake with NO WORRIES and NO RISK of getting attacked nor bitten by a snake. 🤓😊
