- Wiring Diagrams are vital to efficiently diagnose today's cars. In part 4 of our wiring diagram series, we show you how to apply wiring diagrams to the diagnosis itself. We're working on a 2006 Ford F250 6.0L that has numerous issues across multiple systems. Enjoy

Found that many times, saved a bunch of time and work.
I was told at the Ford Training Center years ago......If you get multiple codes on your scan tool, look to see where their powers and grounds are located and if they are commonly powered and/or grounded.
It worked many times for electrical problems.

I like the training aid you used. Just an hour ago I repaired a dim HVAC display by re-soldering the resistors. You and other techs that share your skills as helped me a lot. I appreciate that Mike.
I used to own a 1986 Corvette in the late 1990s. These had the digital dashboards and were very problematic. Mine would go dim sometimes but always do to a bump in the road. I pulled the multi-later boards out (which was simple) and re-soldered each capacitor. It was as bright as the heavens afterwards!

junk solder. this is where a 2 channel scope is priceless. monitor the power going in and the power going out. see which one drops out. the old days are gone when a voltmeter was king. great explanation on looking for the common denominator. its easy to get confused doing this the whiteboard idea was a good one.

Thank you, Mike. You're a great teacher! I owned a 2006 F250 and I bought the truck with the same exact issue due to that connector. There is so much strain on that connector because the harness seems to have zero slack, so the typical 'truck ride' and strain on the board connection leads to failure.

Mike excellent video with lots of schematic reading info. Heat and vibration I have found out to being main causes for circuit board failures. I know a gentleman his name and company is Maic Salazar automotive diagnostics. Great individual and he personally does the repairs. He is located in northern Virginia close to where my daughter lives and I told him I would highly recommend his business. Anyway I have to look at my windows 365 package and see if I have that whiteboard option. If not I will get it. Great way to trace out circuits without using reams of paper and ink which is not cheap. Thanks again Mike for sharing your knowledge. Artie 😊 we all need a smily face nowadays especially today being Election Day. Stay well and safe 👍 just for info sake their are boards between boards like a sandwich that can go bad and can’t be fixed that the wiggle test will not confirm. Sometimes tapping and flexing the board can help locate the problem. Just some insight.

Sorry I'm late! Got WAY behind on my videos. Great procedure you outlined here. I'd probably be alot more successful if I started writing things down like this, lol - can't remember crap these days! I try to find commonalities, then I forget where I started halfway through my diag ... 😂
Was worth a shot reflowing the solder. I've repaired 2 separate issues on my '93 Volvo 940 doing that in the cluster, and HVAC unit. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but worth a shot nonetheless. Great stuff as usual, Mike!

There is a repair facility in Syracuse NY that is called United Radio that repairs instrument clusters along with other electrical items. I've never used them but I hear of other people that have had them do repairs and they do a good job with pretty quick turn around time after repair.

Great video Mike ... I was thinking powers and grounds right away, but probably would have chased my tail for a good bit to hit on the IC .... United Radio is another company that will repair IC's ... they have always done a good job for me and they also give a 1 year guarantee. In talking to the techs there, it seems there has been a change in the solder formulation that allows the joints to crack requiring them to be re-flowed...

Hi Mike. Great video thanks for using your time to make them. I had a gmc (imagine that) that the dash would just go out randomly. Gauges lights everything. I finally caught it when I could verify power and ground when it was out. Had to be in the dash. I sent it off to circuit board medics. They fixed it and got it right back. I think it was 3 days turnaround. Great people to deal with and fast service. They did have a issue with it. They called and said it had some pulled pads on the board and it was going to cost a added $50 to fix. Was that ok with me. I said yes and they said they would get it fixed and shipped out the same day. And they did. Good place to get a dash repaired. Thanks again for the videos.

Great video. We have a 1990 ford f250.ford says we need the f150 computer 8900 to 10,000 lb. vehicle and i say the wireing cluster colors are the same on this 1990 as the 1991,so this makes it more confuseing.what computer do we get.

Good question, most of the time if the dealer uses the vin to look up the parts they are correct. The other option would be to pull out the cluster and look for a part number to cross reference.

Awesome instruction. I have a question maybe you can help me with. I'm trying to troubleshoot a parasitic draw. When I pull the fuse that the IPM lid identifies as "HZRD LP" most of the draw goes away. When I pull the fuse identified as "IOD" the rest of it goes away. How do I use the words "HZRD LP" and "IOD" to relate to the schematic, which uses numbers, as in "Fuse 2" and "Fuse 26" etc? Thanks.
24:40 From this angle, pins 5 and 18 counting 1 at top left look like they might have fused.
24:42, once it cools, if it's not joined, it's a tiny gap - maybe one that could build capacitance, spark over causing a brief glitch?

Is the instrument cluster a gateway module or on a lin bus?
An easy mistake to make is to assume that because you find an active fault that this is the only problem. It probably is the instrument cluster but did you check the fuses and power/grounds as well as relays etc?

Wiring diagrams is like a map you have to follow to figure out a problem
I had similar problems once. The root cause was that the negative pole of the battery - body connection was too rusted. Had to be cleaned, contact sprayed and reconnected.
My 03 F-350 6.0 Diesel Voltage regulator failed, overcharged the batteries blowing the secondary up. After replacing the generator and batteries and all the fuses it is a no crank no start. The accessories all come on when the key is in the on position but when you turn it to start it all cuts out until you release the key back to run. I read a short coming from f2-22 it doesn't seem to be getting power at the PCM but I can't seem to locate the issue . If anyone has a suggestion I'm all ears
Is there a reason you did not suspect a faulty ground connection?

Yep. Go find the common denominator between all the problems. First thing that should be done not chase down all the problems separately.

Most shops charge by the hour so they want you to take your time so they make money. Can't really think about chasing down all the problems myself. Never went at mechanics that way. Hope you taught someone a good lesson doing this way for them to see without arguement. Lol.
I would have been all over those solder connections with a magnifying glass, and looking for the cracked or dull solder joint(s)
Yes it's time consuming, but super cheap if you find and fix the problem.
15 minutes, and 15 cents worth of solder is a lot cheaper than a several hundred dollar cluster.
