His work pulls on our souls and calls us back to a time when we were more connected to our bodies, to the elements, to God. His videos are a cleansing therapy. You are not alone!
Quintessential Martijn. He needs rocks of a very specific type, size and weight so he creates a quary on the edge of his property. He figures out how to transport the rocks to his stone house. He determines how to cut the rocks and spends hours figuring out exactly which rock fit into a very precise pattern to make his wall. And he keeps us under his thrall every step of the way.
The only time I get sad watching your videos is the ending because I know I have to wait another week to live vicariously through you in the Italian alps. Your videos are so beautiful and relaxing to me. I’m always impressed with all your projects and how amazing they turn out. I also appreciate how you take the time to explain your methods and reasoning why you build things a certain way. It’s very educational. I’ve been watching theses series since the beginning. And it’s been pretty relaxed until the moment Martjin was piercing the tent for the heat pipe. Maaan, this was really intense... felt like the concentration span was up to its fullest

Like the new wood-burner in the tent. I have one very similar, but did find it’s essential to support the chimney with cables - you really don’t want a hot pipe flailing about if a storm comes.

I have been watching these videos for some time now and i am getting more and more engrossed in them. They are so beautifully made and positive. They are also informative. The backdrop is spectacular and Martijn has a really relaxing and calm manner about him that actually makes me feel calmer. I look forward to watching every week and sometimes watch them over again so i don't miss anything.
As You will not move camp, have You thought about putting some stones into the tent? They would store some of the heat of the oven. I would start by putting some behind the oven, so this past of the radiation hits them instead the tentwall. Same goes for the space under the oven. Maybe You have a nice big flat one You can put the oven onto, or even pour a small concrete plate for that purpose.
I came here to say this. Consider putting the stove on a spare piece of slate. You wouldn't want an unnoticed stray spark to smoulder in your beautiful rug.
You know what would be awesome, a multi hour video of just the mountain views and sounds (wind in the trees, faint cowbells, etc) from your property, just for people to play in the background, I know I would...

The energy seemed different this time. Although you still took time to manage your familiar routines I felt you were pushing yourself as the days started drawing in and the walls required more effort to complete to your aesthetic standards. Watching you meticulously labor stacking each stone one-by-one has given me a greater appreciation for the homes I see constructed in stack stone. @25:15, I absolutely loved the scenery after picking up chestnuts. Scribing a line on both sides of the stone using a hammer and chisel also works well and leaves a more natural edge. Although your method is definitely a labor/ time saver!

Hey Martijn, You know this all ready, but just just in case you may not have thought about it yet, here's a suggestion to keep you warm all night long in your tent this winter after the fire goes out. Stack some of the stones you have under the stove, and in the back. Stack the stone wall in back in a curved manner at least as high as the stove, the more stone the better. You will stay nice and warm all night.Just thinking about you my friend.

great content as always. However, I would recommend you to store your firewood above ground. The bottom layer of your stack of firewood will be wet and unusable with this way of building. Also your firewood needs some kind of a roof or tarp above it, or else it will become wet from rain and snow
It hurt my heart when you pierced the tent for the stove pipe opening. Don't know why but with this tent quality I imagined there would have been a trick stove vent opening in the top. Thanks for sharing it is very relaxing watching a master at work surrounded by nature's backdrop. As a child I would follow my dad at home keeping him supplied with mortar and bricks. So remember keeping bricks wet and the proper mixture of sand, water and cement. As you have stated the time and thought put into the wall will pay off in the end and your masterpiece will last well beyond your years. What a joy it is at the end of the day to see what you're hands have created. My dad always needed to be acknowledged for his work which kept his momentum going. Get a scrubbing brush for your potatoes that way you can brush the soil off when it's dry and they will store longer. Then you can only wash those you're cooking that day. Great harvest from your small orto. Oh and collecting chestnuts my favourite time of year.

Several years ago, I was given a truckload of scraps of dimensional lumber that was safe to burn. My nephews 'helped' stack it. Can I just say, your stack of split logs is neater than their "stack" of wooden cubes. Thank heaven neither of them decided to build houses for a living!

Holy cow(s)! Loved this one for many reasons, but first and foremost is the masonry. I hope people will learn and continue to appreciate not only the historical significance here, but the degree of patience, skill, and effort required to keep any rehabilitations as this structurally and aesthetically accurate. It is my wish that owners will practice in kind like methods of duplicating this masonry and/or find someone skilled who can in order to maintain integrity and homogeneity. Ultimately, this work becomes the mortar that binds us with the hard-earned foundations of the past. My sincere thanks for helping to preserve the permaculture, beauty, and the 120 year old architectural heritage of Valle Pellice territories of the Alps in an exemplary manner for posterity’s sake. In Canada, what we call Beech and Birch are considered hardwoods. I’ve used them both in a wood stove. Of course, if I owned a property similar to yours, I wouldn’t cut them for firewood either. 😊

I am an artist who loves architecture, traveling, painting and people. I have been a solo traveler since I was 17....(45)years..... from the west Indies to the Lap Land I have been quite a loner but have met many beautiful souls on Earth...no language needed. So I get your watermelon story. I had a beautiful encounter last year on a bus in Paris (during the pandemic)(I think I was the only American)with a woman who had recently lost her father. She spoke no English and I spoke no French but we were friends within minutes. we understood each others pain and loses and soon we were laughing and giggling until it was her stop and then she had to get off . We were smiling and waving as the bus drove away ,until I was out of sight. I had a smile on my face and so did she. Our day had improved over a simple encounter. And I still think of her and her smiling and waving as the bus pulled away. I wonder about her to this day. That is just one example how one can effect another's life. Just you sharing your day may seem one thing to you but may be different for someone else. Thanks for sharing. Jeanette

You could cure your potatoes on your stone table in the sunshine. Skins will toughen and keep much longer. Fresh potatoes and meatballs…yum! Stone mason extraordinaire!
Your lumber pile gives me a feeling of happiness for some reason. I think because I enjoy the thought of having a surplus of good quality fire wood for the winter, being warm and cooking over it, smelling its aroma etc. Pretty incredible 😊🪵🔥
Hi Martjin, I have the exact same canvascamp tent as you and here's a few tips. The stove you have is OK, but it's too small for that tent. Don't forget you have 210 sq feet of area to heat. Look for a bigger wood stove - I had one that size before in my Sibley 500 and froze with it. Another even bigger problem is the location, I like you, put it off to one side of the tent but that's a big mistake. (too late now but, trust me, get the hole patched) and do it over, just order a new bigger exit jack and get patched professionally by canvas tent shop. Get a stove that has at least a 5 or 6" diameter chimney and run it right up the middle of the stove at the front peak, it should be about 18" away from the pole. What that does, is instead of having only about 18" to 2 feet of stove pipe in the tent - if you run it up the middle you'll wind up with close to 9 FEET of stove pipe in the tent radiating all that wonderful heat. It's much more efficient to have 9 FEET or stove pipe putting out heat in the tent than having the majority of it Outside. Also for the stove - the Winnerwell is cute but you're not mobile so you don't need to care about the lightness and portability of the stove. Go look at one like the Camp Chef CS-14 it's a solid well built welded stove that will outlast that Winnerwell, and yes, it's also 85 lbs. You want that heavy thermal mass in the tent - plus for winter you can actually load it up and not have to refill the stove every hour. I can make mine last about 3 hours between re-loads. I've been quite comfy in it at -38C here in Canada. Also go look at the 3 gal water tank that hooks up to the side, you don't need it with the flash heater you have but in snow over winter its nice to have it in the tent.
But...but...I'm so anxious for the stone layer! To see this finally completed will be amazing, seeing all the work that went into it. I had no idea there were so many layers to lay down. So anxious............

It’s so wonderful there. I swear that once after the fantastical chorus of cowbells diminished for a second I could hear a Majestic Mountain Mule’s song. There are levels to the fantasticalness you experience there on a daily basis
there may still be time to put insulating foam boards between the horizontal rafters, then the sheet metal cover, then the roof stones. The fluffy insulation material put earlier is not thick enough, it may get moist, dormice may pull out the material for nesting or even nest in it under the roof. They'll find ways in, as do other, smaller animals. Foam panels would have been better. - I enjoy and admire your work immensely!

I have been watching these videos for some time now and i am getting more and more engrossed in them. They are so beautifully made and positive. They are also informative. The backdrop is spectacular and Martijn has a really relaxing and calm manner about him that actually makes me feel calmer. I look forward to watching every week and sometimes watch them over again so i don't miss anything.

As You will not move camp, have You thought about putting some stones into the tent? They would store some of the heat of the oven. I would start by putting some behind the oven, so this past of the radiation hits them instead the tentwall. Same goes for the space under the oven. Maybe You have a nice big flat one You can put the oven onto, or even pour a small concrete plate for that purpose.
I came here to say this. Consider putting the stove on a spare piece of slate. You wouldn't want an unnoticed stray spark to smoulder in your beautiful rug.
Perhaps just some radiator foil? Flexible and easier to manage.

The energy seemed different this time. Although you still took time to manage your familiar routines I felt you were pushing yourself as the days started drawing in and the walls required more effort to complete to your aesthetic standards. Nice to see Johannes back. The mountains are amazingly beautiful with cloud and fog swirling through them. Thanks for inviting us in.
I felt a definite sense of urgency this episode, despite the usual chilled atmosphere, the seasons change fast up in the mountains!

I can recommend @TA Outdoors or @Erik Grankvist, the first one is about bushcraft and construction of Viking houses for example. The second one is a Swedish guy making his own log cabin without any electricity!
Watching you meticulously labor stacking each stone one-by-one has given me a greater appreciation for the homes I see constructed in stack stone. @25:15, I absolutely loved the scenery after picking up chestnuts. Scribing a line on both sides of the stone using a hammer and chisel also works well and leaves a more natural edge. Although your method is definitely a labor/ time saver!
@@Oldmane-420 yes correct definitely a time & labor saver and of course using my method you would certainly be putting the cut edge/s facing inwards so as not to be visible on the exterior. and maintain the natural appearance.

Hey Martijn, You know this all ready, but just just in case you may not have thought about it yet, here's a suggestion to keep you warm all night long in your tent this winter after the fire goes out. Stack some of the stones you have under the stove, and in the back. Stack the stone wall in back in a curved manner at least as high as the stove, the more stone the better. You will stay nice and warm all night.Just thinking about you my friend.

great content as always. However, I would recommend you to store your firewood above ground. The bottom layer of your stack of firewood will be wet and unusable with this way of building. Also your firewood needs some kind of a roof or tarp above it, or else it will become wet from rain and snow
It hurt my heart when you pierced the tent for the stove pipe opening. Don't know why but with this tent quality I imagined there would have been a trick stove vent opening in the top.

As a child I would follow my dad at home keeping him supplied with mortar and bricks. So remember keeping bricks wet and the proper mixture of sand, water and cement.

The cows sound like there having a helluva time.
Get a scrubbing brush for your potatoes that way you can brush the soil off when it's dry and they will store longer. Then you can only wash those you're cooking that day. Great harvest from your small orto. Oh and collecting chestnuts my favourite time of year.

Several years ago, I was given a truckload of scraps of dimensional lumber that was safe to burn. My nephews 'helped' stack it.

Holy cow(s)! Loved this one for many reasons, but first and foremost is the masonry. I hope people will learn and continue to appreciate not only the historical significance here, but the degree of patience, skill, and effort required to keep any rehabilitations as this structurally and aesthetically accurate. It is my wish that owners will practice in kind like methods of duplicating this masonry and/or find someone skilled who can in order to maintain integrity and homogeneity.
Ultimately, this work becomes the mortar that binds us with the hard-earned foundations of the past.

In Canada, what we call Beech and Birch are considered hardwoods. I’ve used them both in a wood stove. Of course, if I owned a property similar to yours, I wouldn’t cut them for firewood either. 😊

I am an artist who loves architecture, traveling, painting and people.
I have been a solo traveler since I was 17....(45)years..... from the west Indies to the Lap Land I have been quite a loner but have met many beautiful souls on Earth...no language needed. So I get your watermelon story.
I had a beautiful encounter last year on a bus in Paris (during the pandemic)(I think I was the only American)with a woman who had recently lost her father. She spoke no English and I spoke no French but we were friends within minutes. we understood each others pain and loses and soon we were laughing and giggling until it was her stop and then she had to get off . We were smiling and waving as the bus drove away ,until I was out of sight. I had a smile on my face and so did she.
Our day had improved over a simple encounter. And I still think of her and her smiling and waving as the bus pulled away.
I wonder about her to this day. That is just one example how one can effect another's life.
Just you sharing your day may seem one thing to you but may be different for someone else.

Hi Martjin,
I have the exact same canvascamp tent as you and here's a few tips. The stove you have is OK, but it's too small for that tent. Don't forget you have 210 sq feet of area to heat. Look for a bigger wood stove - I had one that size before in my Sibley 500 and froze with it.
Another even bigger problem is the location, I like you, put it off to one side of the tent but that's a big mistake. (too late now but, trust me, get the hole patched) and do it over, just order a new bigger exit jack and get patched professionally by canvas tent shop.
Get a stove that has at least a 5 or 6" diameter chimney and run it right up the middle of the stove at the front peak, it should be about 18" away from the pole. What that does, is instead of having only about 18" to 2 feet of stove pipe in the tent - if you run it up the middle you'll wind up with close to 9 FEET of stove pipe in the tent radiating all that wonderful heat.
It's much more efficient to have 9 FEET or stove pipe putting out heat in the tent than having the majority of it Outside. Also for the stove - the Winnerwell is cute but you're not mobile so you don't need to care about the lightness and portability of the stove. Go look at one like the Camp Chef CS-14 it's a solid well built welded stove that will outlast that Winnerwell, and yes, it's also 85 lbs.
You want that heavy thermal mass in the tent - plus for winter you can actually load it up and not have to refill the stove every hour. I can make mine last about 3 hours between re-loads. I've been quite comfy in it at -38C here in Canada. Also go look at the 3 gal water tank that hooks up to the side, you don't need it with the flash heater you have but in snow over winter its nice to have it in the tent.

It’s so wonderful there. I swear that once after the fantastical chorus of cowbells diminished for a second I could hear a Majestic Mountain Mule’s song. There are levels to the fantasticalness you experience there on a daily basis
there may still be time to put insulating foam boards between the horizontal rafters, then the sheet metal cover, then the roof stones. The fluffy insulation material put earlier is not thick enough, it may get moist, dormice may pull out the material for nesting or even nest in it under the roof. They'll find ways in, as do other, smaller animals. Foam panels would have been better. - I enjoy and admire your work immensely!
