That's what out of sight out of mind looks like, Never worked before doesn't even work in North Korea. Cops ignored it because it's not a high priority neighborhood, It depends on who's complaining. Ewwwwww! Bed bugs, lice, cockroaches, water bugs, mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, bats, rats, and every bug imaginable. There's no way I would party back there. Omgosh I'm sick from looking at this.
That whole area of Southwest Philly used to be called, "The Meadows", years ago. I remember going there in the sixties with my Dad to visit his aunt (who was like a mother to him), many times. Way before Lindbergh Blvd. and the surrounding area was developed. I used to laugh at my dad, because he said, "C'mon, we are going to take a ride to the city". If anything, it was not the city at all and could have been a scene from any part of rural USA. Very wet area and kind of swampy. My dad told me, when they were kids, they often trapped muskrats there to make money. They often told me and my cousins to stay away from an area that was some type of trailer park. They said that the gypsies lived there and a lot of shady stuff was going on there. As someone else mentioned, there were always people looking to make some extra cash with a side hustle. To single out Philadelphia for this is total BS, as it goes on all across the country and the world. For the people who cannot believe this, it is proof you have lived an entitled and sheltered life with blinders on. Nothing is what you perceive it to be in this world.
A speakeasy is an illegal bar that don't have a license that's usually held in a building but the patron knows a password or a specific time to go. They figured why not do it outside.
Did that doofus say that a speakeasy is weird? Obviously someone that hasn't been around actual real people for a long time. I'm guessing not only is that not the only illegal bar in Philly, it's probably not the only one on that street.
Why is this even news? Little after-hour or illegal bars have always existed and still do even in nice neighborhoods let alone the ghetto. There is one in my city where it's in a hair salon, it serves as an illegal under the books after-hour for people to drink and listen to music and I seen people make a business out of their own basement.
I'd like to know how the good officer uses the word speakeasy. By 'illegal drinking', does he mean underage drinking is going on here? I'm curious why the interview didn't include questions like these.
Serving liquor (for money, I seriously doubt anybody there was just giving it away or sharing, like it was a party) is illegal without a license. If couldn't get in without paying, then that's illegal, as far as I can tell.
I grew up in SWP. In the woods(we called it the fields) behind Elmwood Park all the way to 74th Street we always had a spot back there set up with couches and chairs set up with a fire pit. We would throw keg parties all the time. It couldn't have been more fun as a teenager growing up in that area. This is pretty normal in that section of SWP guess. I miss it.
Observation: Squatters rights,.. would remove them by identifying the area such as a Speakeasy. Simple investigation. Who owns this vast area one calls a " SpeakEasy " ?
The neighbors had been complaining to the city but the city failed to react. We are really going to have to vet on who we want to politically lead us. There is no excuse for the city's actions.
I'm not understanding how this is news worthy? Seriously? A speakeasy? There are more then 15 kids who went missing in North Philly and I haven't seen it once on ANY NEWS BROADCAST! I guess this is more important? SHIT IS SAD
It's a homeless encampment. Outdoors is the only place they have to drink after a long day of pan handling. They can shut it down all they want. They will just find somewhere else to go.
That's definitely Not a speakeasy. While the underground parties in Philly do happen in other areas. No one other than the homeless would go there. Maybe some teenagers who have no where left to chill but that spot is too dirty even for most teens today.
I was just about to say that this isn’t anything new. There is another speakeasy in SW Philly near 71st greenway Ave. Police have been called, but nothing happens.
So all the high school field/woods partying I did back in the nineties was actually done at a “speakeasy”? Maybe where I was didn’t qualify for that title because we didn’t leave as much garbage thrown around.
