This is wicked! love the way that the signage was caught aswell. shows the miss mash of the old school serif signs along with the newer standard typeface ones. The subway was really facing up to its problems back then.
I was 10 years old in 1986 and nothing beats this era in New York City! New York was so grimey and had a edge to it that it just doesn't have anymore! Sure the crime rate was high but just the aura! im getting nostalgic just typing this!!!!
So, what do you think about the crime now? It's 5x worse!!!!
As a kid I remember when R32s were on the K train.
3:05 ...damn that platform is narrow
MISSSSSSSSSSSSS MY 80SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Bellissimo!! :)
Thanks for the video. Seeing some of the old tyme schemes and the grafiti brings back memories from my youth.
Das sind ja wirklich sehr Stimmungvolle Aufnahmen. Beim Betrachten musste ich sofort an den Film "The Taking of Pelham 123" von 1974 denken. Klasse Aufnahmen.
Yessss, I remember when I was a kid, not all of them But I still remember when they looked like that
They were just starting to replace the old cars with the newer graffiti-resistant skin units around this time...Thank the Maker!
I'm listening to Amor Fati, by that group Washed Out while watching this video. The chill wave sound of the music mixes well with the trains rollin' by.
Damn. The dirty subway makes the people look dirty.
Schöne Aufnahmen. :)
Holy Sh*t! I was born and raised in a completely different NYC =/
Ahh 1986... My year!!!
23 seconds in, you'll see one of the first R62A to run on the 1 if you look closely, also both at the 1:45 and 1:51 mark, you see the first of the rebuilt "Redbirds" as the 2 was the first line to get them. A's besides having R44's, there were some that did have graffiti along with R38. R32's was the main figure on the K badly graffitied.
NYC boreing now
It's pretty much one huge Disneyland
Shit! This vid took me down memory lane to the max! Was 22 back then...MISS THOSE DAYS, YO!! :-)
to the MTA....Thank you for giving the world & youth culture a voice & an amazing art form that once upon a time was SEEN & judged to be petty mindless, worthless vandalism....but has now grown into a beautiful butterfly.....
@BMT An 'expert' has spoken. Bravo. Of course it's a 'voice'. Its been a 'voice',a form of 'expression' and a means to 'protest' since the caveman era and continues to be so today in modern times. Come back once your alittle more clued up on the subject. You might have noticed that we are currently in the middle of a pretty screwed up and uncertain situation globally right now. I have seen the creation of many many pieces revolving around the current Covid 19/Coronavirus pandemic highlighting it on various surfaces and throwing support behind the medical staff such as our hard working, amazing and dedicated front line NHS here in the UK yet our very own government has failed them dismally and 3 years ago dismissed a pay rise in the Houses of Parliament and actually cheered at that fact when it was decided that a pay rise would not be agreed yet our very own Prime Minister is now ironically in need of their care and nursing back to good health after being tested and diagnosed with Covid 19. As mentioned previously......many graffiti artists are visually showing their support in only the best way they know how. That kind of destroys your idea graffiti is not in no shape or form being a 'voice' or a 'message'. Yes agreed it is also out and out vandalism. Kids rebelling against authority and 'doing something they legally shouldn't be doing',inflating their own personal ego's and originally it was all abit of a sneaky game getting your name up in as many places and locations as possible. It naturally moved to the trains in the early 70's and then the competition really hotted up. They had stand out more than the next person....go bigger, better, brighter, more colourful and get up more or the most on every line. Going 'All City'......www.redbull.com/us-en/films/wall-writers?fbclid=IwAR20baMIBmu4y2jy-VjoUy17duLUyu5BJVA5tHstqiW6El5ppCzPpmyySFE
@BMT th-cam.com/video/v9jBcgumtd0/w-d-xo.html From NYC's MTA in the 70's and 80's to worldwide in 2020....the most f*cked up,uncertain, crazy times I've ever in my 46 years on this earth ever known.
@BMT th-cam.com/video/45i8m8SR5uY/w-d-xo.html
@BMT th-cam.com/video/gvewKHhAj80/w-d-xo.html It had no 'message' or a 'voice'.....
That narrow platform at 2:54 is scarey
i would kill for sound!! thx for the upload tho. good shit.
Approved... by Homeslice
wow the K train
Did you film this without audio or am I the only viewer who can not hear any sound with this clip?
He filmed it without audio
Yes, and just realized that the R33's before rebuild did get the metal door window bands on them.
They date to when AC was installed.
And you are not even giving credit to the person who actually filmed it nice🤦♂️👏👏👏👏
The subway today is brand new compared to back in 1986.
People forgot to mention that these trains ran faster and had more speed then these new ones. They should makes all the trains letters and numbers white with no grafitti but the same speed and power like before
Wooooooooooooow im feeling this video the K line wow !!!!!
@Psychedelia1969

@Beanz920 someday, someday. We can't really do much to make the real and alive colorful graffiti art trains come back but we can always hope it will somehow happen again.
When Did they stop using tokens?? I left when I was a kid back in 92 and I went back back in 07 and so on and it was these metro cards.
2004
Geil Alter 👍🏻
Best era lots of fun bombing trains
Prez one?!?!
NYC subways were still a little bit like this in the late 90s
HaiiDex3 They were nowhere near like this in the late '90s or any part of the '90s. The last graffiti train were retired from service in the Spring of '89.

I have never been to New York, by it looks like in India or somewhere in the third world.
This Old Footage of what the NYC Subways used To Look Like.
*Its Much Better Now. Clean and New Subways and Stations
westport17782010 I miss old nyc
it's just like eastern Europe now in 2011. Especially Hungary.
Ah c`mon dont be so negative sure there were some bad aspects to life back then but it wasnt all bad. We had a great music scene hip hop etc. We really did survive our youth back then. Sure Kochs New York was crazy but it was real and not the gentrified Candyland we see today. To summers in Bay Ridge ....
No they werent
1986 a very bad year for most writers cause it was the start of the crack epidemic on NYC and destroyed the best generation the world has seen. The Hip Hop pioneers, the graffiti writer, the rapper & DJ and break dancers were now under attack by our racist government. But our work became a phenomenon around the world and and it's still with us today......
Whut?
This was the crack years, the system had hit rock bottom by then, but started to rebound by the 90s. I left in '87 and it is no where near like this now. Noting the change in demographics, the people mix is no longer lower and middle class with diversity. This was NYC, it will return after the affluenza outbreak ends.
No Metrocard. TOKEN.
GTA IV
Hideous.
Really? Interesting. I left the city in 1995 and even returning 4 years later to visit found it so clean. I guess they tried to bring that art form back.
themansayz It's anything but clean .
bommmba jak huj :D takie filmy = łza w oku się kreci ~!~~
I was born in the wrong generation, I would have loved to be in those good times and not these all ugly. WHY I HAD TO BE BORN IN THE 90 `S WHY?
Arransadler dude you know how bad nyc used to be right?
sustained!
This was the bad ol' days because graffiti vandals covered the entire subway with their tags. (Except the train at 4:03)
Hahahahahahaha!!! Classic.....
just a crying shame the trains in 2012 now look like hi tech, super shiney spaceships....lifeless, no zest, no urbaness, no nitty gritty,no character.....sooo borrrring!!!!!!
