I put all my focus into my own solo play... but not flitting from system to system as each new thing comes out. I run three solo campaigns (and probably about 20,000 pages of journals, battle reports, photos of in game action, stories and novelettes (all printed and bound on the shelf so I can read them and smile as noatalgia kicks in.. or my friends from my group games can pulldown , read, and enjoy when they want to learn more), and I literally pour all all my love and devotion into this life long project. My shortest solo campaign has been running 19 years, and the longest has run since the late 70`s. When I play with the group its in the same world(s) I use for my solo campaign, so there is an ongoing continuation and familirity to it all. Your words "singularity of focus" is very apt, and I find is incredibly rewarding. But it does take years of focus and single minded gumption for it to take on a life of its own... IF you stick to it without being tempted away by each new thing that hits the shelves :-)
PS of late I have taken on Silver Bayonet and Devilry Afoot, so now have a new campaign which I plan to delve deeply into for years and years to come :-)
I'm getting "Say Anything" vibes here: "I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed.”
Love the ramble from the super smart. I absolutely understand your comment on "such a fractured set of interests". Flitting between projects not because of procrastination but boredom. Painting armies of rank and flank in the same way, hobby session after hobby session just fills me with dread. I've learnt to break things down into small manageable chunks (2-3 hobby sessions) so I can focus and complete. But I'm not creative by nature, I'm an engineer by trade and so everything becomes about the process and efficiency not the joy of creative process.
Hmm well my first question (to the engineer) is: do you enjoy efficiency-ifying processes, ‘cause that can be it’s own creative reward right? I don’t have a second question, it’s early lol. This army painting thing is probably why I stick to skirmish sized games too 😂🍻
@@tabletopalchemy It can be but I do feel that with my many years of experience, the error reduction/ right first time, is more of a "follow a process" rather than "be creative". It's the creative types that give me "work to do" as they think result rather than process and seemingly never understand why the checks and balances are in place for the result to happen, each time, every time. They enjoy the shortcut, I enjoy the "told you so". I have more perverse fun than them. I just have to wait. It's why I enjoy gaming with random chance with different game systems. that's where my creative side comes out dealing with the randomness. It's why I detest 40K with it's huge dice pools which means you get a standard distribution every time. You might as well play Yahtzee or Tenzi. Have a great break and enjoy the New Year. I'm glad TH-cam dropped you into my feed.

No script videos are the best of videos, especially when you talk about things that make you inspired. Nothing like a good, meandering story about things that make your heart go a bit faster 😁! I hope you had a nice Christmas and enjoying the snow and cozy fires with warming drinks! I also hope that in 2025 we get to see more progress on the movie and if stars align maybe even a trailer 😉. Many good wishes to you good Sir, may your dreams come up short in comparison to your achievements in the New Year, stay cool and smiling and may your pants never be soggy and filled with snow!
This is very relatable indeed, too many interests and not enough time or focus to dig into them enough to make anything *substantial* to contribute :/ Thwn once in blue moon enough energy and focus is mustered to make «something complete-ish»- and then it’s on to something completely different - all the while seeing amazing things being created and being inspired to create something myself, only to get sidetracked again … But you have your youtube videos, and those are little gems of creation and they are something to «put on the shelf as a finished product» - and this is what I found myself when I started my channel and made videos - it’s actual projects I get to «finish» to a certain degree, improving incrementally but still finishing and putting those «products» out there - so in video production I found a way to actually make something, and the weird part is that it’s enabled me to finish other projects as well to then make videos about. So after faffing about for 35 something years I am now working on things long term, while documenting them, and the documentation part and the potential video it will result in has been the catalyst for making that happen - not sure why, but happy it turned out that way :)
Technology is so cool. Here you are an ocean away. BrisVegas to Los Angeles. 11K km. 7K miles. And yet you can speak a truth to me about how I choose to live my life. I played Gloomhaven. Twice. I flit from hobby idea to hobby idea like a bee in a lavender patch. I have hundreds of those dungeon tiles from Pathfinder. I'm alpha testing my own TTRPG. I have a lot of irons in a lot of fires and I love it. A little frustrated that things haven't been completed. Yet. I am easily inspired. Typically, after watching your latest video. Thanks! Have a good one.
I wrote a table top miniature war game in the 90’s - published 2 editions and a range of miniatures that probably 25 people played. I recently dusted it off and have started to bring it into current style of play. Most of it was tossed but it was the inspiration for a new game that I’ve been working on. I totally get the inspiration/desire to create a package of your thoughts and ideas to share with others.
Here's to the many scattered interests! Someday I'm gonna start that game store cafe, just after I finish my own independent film, record that album, and patent that new pressure cooker I thought of... also I need to spend more time outdoors. I also have a small mountain of rulebooks and games that have not been played too much (or at all), but are definitely there because they are inspiring (cross ref: the Cheap Dragons Holiday Special song lyrics). One thing I've found is that since starting to write my own rules for our gaming group, these books and the lore become even more of a fun thing to reference- as I'm not at all burdened by the feeling of regret for not having played something that I bought. It turns out I am playing the parts of it I like the most, channeled through the mishmash of years of other gaming experiences and a zillion pieces of lore. It's Pan-game-onium over here! Great video, thanks!
Ok I'm a bit late watching this video. I was swamped with work. Just how many after Christmas sales and events can you get? Holy crap! I had more copy in my in box then I could even want to think about. They got done and my voice is a bit sore. The pay check will look good. I loved the ramble. There are times when ADD is an advantage. I am glad you have a handle on things. I would love to see a video on those D and D tiles. That just game me some ideas. Now to plan them out. Who knows maybe they will make me famous or something. Happy New Year!!! I hope next year brings you some success!!
I have the intro Jaws of the Lion, played the tutorials sessions and the first 3 actual game sessions and then boxed it up. I know there are lovers of the game system, I just didn't get enough enjoyment from tracking all the stuff that you needed to track. I found the overhead attached to the gameplay excruciatingly boring and sucked what little joy that was to be had from the game. Controversial view, I know. I also realised at the same time, that I like sandboxes, not game puzzles. I love cribbage and backgammon but dislike chess, go and checkers where responses are almost choreographed for perfect play. I struggled with Spirit Island until I picked up the Branch and Claw expansion which introduced another level variability to disrupt the perfect response to any situation. I can while away many an hour playing 5 Parsecs from Home, a solo sci fi sandbox where you create the narrative for your crew. You should get Gloomhaven out and play it or move it on. It takes up too much space and has a value that you can divert into "less intimidating" projects. Your choice, your fun, your business. Have a great 2025
I was wondering how long it would take you to get sucked into this like the rest of us. I have spent the last five days cutting up corrugated cardboard and toothpicks! 😂

Still writing my novel at 61 😂. You will get there with the movie, it’s such a cool thing and remember keep calm and carry on 👍🏼

I am right there I buy the game knowing that I will never play , I just like having the books on my shelves.
This is what I am doing with my little neighbourhood terrain and map making business. I'm very proud of the work I'm putting out.
Excellent! That’s ca good feeling to have, keep on creating 🤙🏴☠️🍻

I too am a collector of rules. Sometimes for the background/lore, other times because I am intrigued by the system itself. Same goes for RPGs;
Yes I like to pick up some books just cause I like ‘em as books lol but always inspiration to be found
