I think the reason I like your guys’ discussions so much is that you’re both very opinionated but yet fundamentally very agreeable too, so the conversation is spirited but I can also tell you’re trying to let each other speak your thoughts, but also have a lot to say too. idk, it’s a pleasantly chaotic dynamic to me xD

I watched this movie with my 8 year old and I think it works really well as a family movie, for her the history and feminist message as well as the depictions of poverty were quite compelling. Personally I would have preferred if it was a financial/government conspiracy rather than the Moriarty they went with, it felt unnecessary and detracted from it being an Enola story. I did enjoy it though and we are now planning to pick up the books.

The fact that you guys disagree so often makes me really love your reviews, its so much nicer to hear two opinions on something gives me much more perspective on the things you review. Plus, when you do agree, it has a much greater credence :)

Sherlock Holmes stories aren't usually fairplay mysteries, they are usually he thinks hard and comes to insane conclusions that are correct. Their appeal comes more from the character drama or comedy of the client's issue. He is more of a platonic ideal of a detective, we are not supposed to figure it out before him. Fairplay mysteries weren't a thing until The Poirot/Marlowe era of Detective stories.

my problem was that all the plot twists were so uninspired that i knew them the moment they were established, like the moment Moriarty talked to Enola at the party i knew she was behind everything and that this was our Moriarty; the moment the young guy showed up at the party i thought to myself: hope it's not like the older guys are the bad guys and the young guy is actually good! and that's what happened, and especially with the girl at the party being Sarah Chapman - i thought it was somehow established that the girl at the party was working with the young William and when it was actually a huge reveal i was veeeery confused
The only good thing that came out of this movie is that we saw Tewkesbury jungle house and now i know what i want to do with my own flat I'm moving into rn

The last thing you mentioned especially was super weird. I swear when Enola went into the ball, she sees "Cecily" and has a thought (shown in the drawings like several times in the movie) of Sarah Chapman with the red hair entering the ball. So I thought Enola actually thought that Cecily was Chapman already. It was really weird when she was surprised later on.

They should make a movie or show about Moriarty trying to get away with crimes and trying to outsmart sherlock whos hunting him

I recommend you guys check out the original Nancy Springer books. They are teen books but they are good and fun fairplay mysteries. They were also adapted into beautiful graphic novels. The movies are loose adaptations. I like the movies though!

I think Sherlock's portion of the mystery was a bit forced and felt shoehorned in as a reason for him to be there but I thought Enola's part was more straightforward and did a good job of laying out clues for the audience to be able to figure out.

Though to be fair that might be because I was already familiar with the whole "phossy jaw" issue that matchstick girls historically suffered from.

Lmao the third scene reveal of moriarity as this black feminist character was a lame and cheap attempt to imitate the novel. What a waste.

@@joseaguilar3323 You probably don't know that Conan Doyle invented Holmes and wrote a number of novels which were popular at the turn of the last century and have produced countless films and series for many decades. Ask your mum or father or teacher at school.

@@stevkyt2374 LOL Buddy, I've been part of Sherlock Holmes forums and conversations since before Tumblr culture ruined them.
I ask because imitate the novel needs more context as to what novel the reveal tried to imitate. Unless they meant "adapt" in which case they wouldn't be talking about ACD's books but Nancy Springer's.
