I know this is an older video, but it's exactly what I need to see. I was unsure which way the gears faced and basically overwhelmed trying to put mine back together.
Hey, I requested a Maico transmission and you didn't throw me a bone. Love your disclaimer though, Maico > Honda (yeah, I went there.) :-P That said, this footage is going to help me quite a bit when I get around to conquering my fears and trying to finish the transmission in my 3D Maico Engine project.
That's a piece of solder, soft metal. I know the head was machined before so Ron suggested make sure the squish is ok. Essentially, no gasket, by hand crush the solder with the piston in the chamber, measure the gasket and measure the clearance of the solder. Make sure the piston wont hit off the head and the gasket is going to be thick enough.
Ya, I've heard people say otherwise too. Cant comment on it myself since never rode or had one. Ya, all big bikes vibrate. I gotten so used to it dont notice but others riding my bikes do. I was looking at buying a 81 Maico 490 once that was vibrating so bad you couldn't find the foot pegs by eye.
I had my linkage apart and I felt lke Joe Mechanic then I see what u do and it reminds me my knowledge and ability is very limited ,....but thats ok...I wish I lived by u I'd pay u to rebuild my lower end.
I have a video on Maico transmission that's in normal motion, you asked for the dimensions but my transmission is already together so can't measure it!
Ya, I was just joking there. The 82 (completely different from the 83) Maico echos back to an earlier era. Essentially, Maico being a small factory only made nessecary changes so a lot of legacy in that engine. Primary chain gives more power but is more maintaince headache. The shifting plate is weird but nothing more. Clutch is a PITA on the Maico that year. Otherwise, bot bikes are designed well. KTM on the other hand is another story all together that I might sell it when Im done.
I'm just busting yer balls ,...Maico was the shit back then...and the cool thing is that u keep those old bikes running strong and doing what they're meant to do!
27 is the washer you put on the end of the shaft before you put the case on. 3 is a colar that you put on the outside once the cases are together. The outside seal has a larger inner diameter than the shaft so the colar sits on the shaft to create the seal and the sprocket pushes on the colar. So the colar doesnt go on until the cases are together.
I have those articles on my site, the Maico in 83 and Mstar in 84 were in second for most powerful! Never rode a YZ490 but would like to,almost got one before, but I have heard mixed reviews besides being on Super Hunkys top ten worst bikes of all time. Some say theyre great easy to start others, like super hunky, say you can never start them and they ping. Maybe Ill get one in a few years once Im done rebuilding my other 2 maicos next year and the KTM.
+James rutko As in how they are assembled or if you can fit a 250 transmission in 500 cases? Probably simmilar setup, but probably wouldn't be able to swap gearing between the two.
haha, well its not the same company anymore and in 81 at least they sold more Maico 490s than Honda did in their entire motorcycle line! For Japense, Honda is good bikes though thats why I have one too!

THANK YOU! A regular replay transmission assembly video!
+New KTM Glad you like it!
Thanks. Nice bikes, there actually was a CR500 AF in my area recently for very cheap only 2k. Usually you dont see them under 4k

cool videos my friend.
do the washers in betwen gears have an especific orientation?
I have a question in the last pic it shows 27 and 3 in your video I didn't see them go on

Is the 1986 cr250 and cr500 the same transmission assembly ? Or are they different ?

Haha, how is your bike running these days?

HONDA,there still in business too!Or at least they sell more than 3 bikes a year.(Sorry Tobeyo)That was on a silver platter for me
I know, I was just messing with you.
Don't even try to make like u know what he's talking about!..lol
