Wow. I've seen Gabriel three times. The first time, a few friends and I were in the foyer of the Forum, rolling a fairly large joint, when PG, head shaven and in looked some sort of astronaut's jumper, came walking right by us. One of our group caught on that it was Gabriel and followed him, just as other people around had the same flash of recognition. I've heard that he used to do that: go walkabout in the audience before the show, to pick up the vibes of all the people. I think that was 1980.
He was completely Head-Shaven for the 80' American Tour. Witness to this by writing here on TH-cam's Search Engine, "Peter Gabriel Live Uptown Theater 1980". I was at that Concert. Enjoy !
SoulGunMetal n I even quoted it to him once I said there’s too much stimuli I can do without the stimuli when I was speaking with somebody else on a project and he got it believe it or not! I really get in myself the quote and petergabriel songs that’s pretty sad next time I’m in a pull out some ABBA know I think that the tonality and the part where he says stimuli and it goes stimuli again is immense. I did have it on dropbox once because it wasn’t playable but if you can put your iPad up to your smart television and use parameters the sound is 1000 times better and you can just close your eyes and listen to the sound which is on believable
This is by far my favorite version of this song.... I've had a bad vhs copy of this for 20 years or so. Glad to see it in better quality. But it's really the music that makes this so good.
that 82´ album of gabriel is so bloody great, at this time gabriel really was the one who very nailed it, the sound and the songs, so intense, really undiscribeably strong and unique gabriel really is a living legend
ce clipe je le regarde tout les jours la voix de peter est superbe j adore la combinaison qu il porte le maquillage est magnifique un geni tout simplement
Shame he never released this version as a single. This is the only thing I've ever seen it used it, and I like it better than the studio version (except for the way it ends). With any luck he'll release this and other alternate versions in high quality during his next remaster release phase.
I can only vote "I like" when I would vote "I adore" (w/ the great yeeeaaaahhhh sung by Roger Daltrey/THE WHO on 'we won't get fooled again' ! Don't ask me why... or I might add ... w/ RAEL/Peter's voice that time : "YAH !... & IT GETS INTO MY BLLLLOOOOODDD !!!" ("Excuse me please" : "I HAVE NO SELF CONTROL ! " I do remember !) I had these videos on my huge vhs tapes from all the world : looks great to now absorb uh swallow them now by a web link. Many thanks for sharing these rarities !
For what it's worth (not much consolation in it, I know) when this aired in Italy in 1983, they still played actual music videos on TV in the US. Even on MTV. MTV didn't play any Peter Gabriel solo stuff on their first day (they did play Genesis' "Turn It On Again" and - 4 times - Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight"), but when the video for "Shock the Monkey" came out it was their #1 video for 9 weeks... they played it so many times every day that even die-hard PG fans were getting sick of it.
ask yourself why we need to go back so far to see such independent creativity?-peter,david,brian,adrian,fripp,murphy,heads,iggy,etc....no one to replace these icons
This is by far the most emotional Pieces I have ever watch Gabriel play He comes out of character like a David Bowie and he really becomes comfortable with that I don’t particularly like the song but the song and the genre that is being played in is outrageously magnanimous. If I were to tell anyone not to go to sledgehammer not to go to his in your eyes work, I would say pick up this obscure piece of layyou hands on me in And a quick tally and broadcast Italy Never again will you hear these harmonies that were plugged the long At aschombe house. All the fibers were ready but I think Gabriel was being the showman that was a little bit afraid to be a showman and a sex simple way. He was going through marriage issues at the time and he just embarked on a solo career. I would love to see more of this and I got this at the Bristol recorder and thankfully this TH-cam account
This is a great version of the song - the video shows the clear evidence of Laurie Anderson's influence (see her "Oh Superman (Oh Massenet)" video for comparison. Thanks for posting this.
@binnyman AGREED! :) Wonder what it was like in 1983 to watch this in the West (if you ever ever got a chance to watch italian television bootlegged or whatnot). must have been a real trip, treat, or something else entirely.
j adore cette version le clip est magnifique il se deplace en souplesse la voix est magnifique pas de cri inuile depuis on n as pas fait mieux le maquillage et le noir lui vont bien peter gabriel est un geni de la musique
WOW! this version of lay your hands on me really kicks ass-i love the "real" drums and the vocal harmonies. I wonder if there is a MP3 available of this version-if there is what is it called?
And "Sledgehammer" is the most played video in MTV's history. Early on, the creative & visionary bands were almost the only ones who really "got" music video. Almost. The other people who got it were marketers, not creators, and they were singularly lacking in vision. It's obvious which side of that divide MTV chose. It's ironic... MTV's first video was "Video Killed The Radio Star", and within a few years MTV almost killed the music video. If the internet hadn't come around we'd be doomed.
It's a shame that all we have is this slightly chewed drop out version from the same heavily bootlegged video tape... I was really hoping this was going to show up on Flotsam & Jetsam
@BeatmakerzUp I recieved this on a dvd from one of the trading groups I'm in 4 yrs ago. I have no idea where to find a cleaner version of the audio. It certainly is a great version of the songs though. Maybe you can use the youtube downloader programme to download the video, and if you have any knowledge about audio editing you can clean it up yourself. Glad you liked the video
@john hamilton I've been watching your video for almost 9 years & I love it a lot John! It's very psychedelic, colorful & atmospheric looking. & it's been giving me lots & lots of music video ideas I'd love to create for my Classic Rock Cover band Sonic Impact. Once I get my band off of this dreadful, damn rotten hiatus we've been on since September 2009. This video is a total keeper. Please do keep it on youtube & don't remove it. :D ;)
+john hamilton Oh WOW! You did? Pardon me 4 asking but, do you know who the musicians are who played with Peter Gabriel in these videos? They don't look like David Rhodes, Tony Levin, Larry Fast & Jerry Marotta to me.
The musicians miming to the tracks were The Electric Guitars, Peter's support band during the late 1982 US tour (the one where Plays Live recordings came from)
[In a super excited & relieved Tenor voice] WOW! Thanks 4 telling me! At last I have now finally found out who the backing band was for this music video, 10 years later! Thanks again 2 you, The Intruder! :D
@sober8 Actually yes... There's a Porcupine Tree Song Called "The sound of Muzak"... hear the lyrics... Is exactly this post but in a retorical Way....
Wow !!! Italian TV is JUST like TV here in the USA. We, too, have music videos play on the tube. Except, over here, they are of talentless "urban youths", mouthing words to a mindless beat, gyrating around half-dressed, and the only lyrics you can make out is something about "aight' and "my bitches'. Oh, yeah: And Britney lip-synching to drivel. Also half-dressed. *SIGH* Terminal pollution of the airwaves. Thank God for PG, as he balances out the talent deficit all by himself. Peace:-)
This is absolutely my favorite version of Lay Your Hands on Me. I've had this on a bootleg VHS for a long long time.
Greatest "live song" of all time.To see Peter drop into the crowd as they pass him around. It blew us away well before Biko

great raw mix & the multi-vocals all being at the same level was cool idea. Lay your hands was fantastic.
Unbelievable! I can't fathom the shocking greatness of this video! PG is my favorite vocalist of all time!
Best version!!!!

The Who Forever! I love Peter in Genesis, and by himself, too.
Great performance!! Great Peter !
Bless you for putting this up.
Always been one of my favorite songs...This is really cool to see and hear
The Italians have great musical tastes, and they also are some of the greatest musicians themselves.
For what it's worth (not much consolation in it, I know) when this aired in Italy in 1983, they still played actual music videos on TV in the US. Even on MTV. This is what I call ART

Sad, isn’t it? But we know how to dig.
This is without a doubt the sexiest version of Lay Your Hands on Me, dark and strange, how can one person be so fascinating?
Proud to be Italian...
Great song a ritual, Peter Gabriel the Great.
Without words...
simply fantastic
if anyone can come through with a higher definition upload of this i would appreciate it more than i could ever say

I don't know why. I've had that happen to me with some other videos I've tried to watch from this site
@binnyman
AGREED! :)

Sublime unique Peter gabriel
Definitely a nice call back to his genesis days with the make up.
GRACIAS PETER!!!
strange music but hypnotic.
When I think of PG this is what i think of in my mind's eye not the dull as ditchwater ballads he trots out now with his voice shot to pieces.
j adore cette version le clip est magnifique il se deplace en souplesse la voix est magnifique pas de cri inuile depuis on n as pas fait mieux le maquillage et le noir lui vont bien peter gabriel est un geni de la musique
coolness!!
I couldn't have said that better.
Amen to that!!

So is there a cleaner audio track of this version? I like the energy of this one, it has a nice contrast with the album version.
Jerry Marotta!

You are very welcome.

l'Arcangelo Peter.........
Yes! Jerry Marotta! This drumming hits! (And who the hell is in charge of the removing of all this great live stuff from POV?!?!)
It's a shame that all we have is this slightly chewed drop out version from the same heavily bootlegged video tape... I was really hoping this was going to show up on Flotsam & Jetsam

WOW..What a cool CLUB-VERSION of this song! Has this ever seen the light day as an official release?
love it. When will he release it on CD?
Simpler times.
Was this version of the song ever released to the public outside of this appearance? It's definetely a studio recording.
@john hamilton I've been watching your video for almost 9 years & I love it a lot John! El Arcángel Gabriel...
was this version ever released? This version should have been on the album!
@AFirmKickInThePants me too
Best front man ever. Sorry, Freddy Mercury fans.
Yes, but we've all heard that line many times before. Don't mind me, I just get impatient.
@binnyman None of that crap was on the TV in the USA in 1983....
No, it's true. He does take ages and the funny thing is he knows it. That being said though, he does think Kate Bush is slower!
PETER GABRIEL MADE IN ITLIA
