I honestly think that if this game didn't have so much history behind it Florida wouldn't have won, but since this was the only loss in the best season in school history is why we played so good
Florida lost Will Grier the following week to suspension for a banned substance. He says he got it at GNC but didn't check with the trainers and whatever it was, it was banned by the NCAA. McElwain handled Grier poorly, Grier transferred to WVU and did well in 2017. McElwain and Florida won the SEC East in 2015 and somehow again in 2016, but really, following this game the Gators never were the same. McElwain got fired following the UGa game in 2017, the team went 4-8 and could have just as easily been 2-10 without the miracle against Tennessee and Kentucky forgetting how to play defense....twice. Oh what could have been with Will Grier at UF. I know he didn't play as well in other games as the Ole Miss game, but given who UF has had at QB since him, he would not have been nearly as bad.
It was unfortunate, and at the time, it felt like the world had ended. However, McElwain would probably still be hanging around right now and we wouldn't be witnessing Mullen building a potential dynasty; something McElwain is incapable of doing.
I'm a little late to the discussion, but how the Will Grier situation was handled back then wouldn't have "fixed" the ongoing issues with the football program over the last 13 years, in my opinion. This all began with Meyer losing control of the locker room towards the end of his era with the Gators and the hiring of Muschamp. Like Meyer, Muschamp knew the lifeblood of college athletics is in your ability to recruit. Muschamp was a tireless recruiter. His inability and stubbornness to allow his offensive coordinators (that changed EVERY season) to actually do their job finally filtered down to not being able to sign top offensive players coming out of high school. Who remembers that both Dalvin Cook and Travis Rudolph were once verbal commits to Muschamp and the Gators before flipping to FSU??? The 2 head coaches after Muschamp in McElwain and Mullen were simply too egotistical to accept the fact that recruiting matters. They thought that "Football IQ" was more important than having superior talent and wanted to prove they could beat 5 star talent with 3 star players. I'm hopeful that Napier is doing it the right way thus far. He has put a major emphasis on recruiting. I hope as a fanbase we can be patient with him as this is going to be a rebuild that may take longer than expected, but in time, will be well worth it.
This pisses me off so bad because we have never recovered from losing Will Grier. It was like a domino effect. When we lost him we went downhill. Florida had so much talent on offense but we had no QB up until Trask and now Richardson. We had defenses that were good enough. I am convinced that Alabama has two less National Championships if Will Grier remains at Florida. Florida was only one of few who actually played with Alabama. Especially in those SEC Championships.
