This is my Hometown. I lived on Salem Ave in apartment number 4 at 1039 Salem Ave from 1976 until 1985, Then we move to Five Oaks Ave for 6 months, then we moved on to 134 Rockwood Ave until I went to Central State University in Wilberforce OH in 1988. I then left and joined the US Army in 1989. I was just in Dayton a few months ago to visit my mom.

First off, thank you for your service Sir!! I am a fellow Veteran as well. I joined the Air Force in June 1993 exactly a week after graduating from High School. I grew up in Dayton as well, in the mid 70's, 80's and then we moved to Kettering the last 2 years of High School after I had an altercation with a gentleman at Belmont High School with a firearm. I grew up on the East Side of Dayton, off Linden ave, by Xenia Ave and then moved off of Wyoming Ave for about 7 years before the move to Kettering. Bussing wasn't a popular decision by alot of parents no matter what race you were when I was a child. As you know, alot of parents didn't like the fact of having schools in their neighborhood but having to send their children on a 30-45 minute (sometimes) bus ride to school (one way) everyday. But my parents thought it was best thing to ever happen to our city (and cities everywhere). Dayton had been segregated for many years before I was born (1974). Dayton was basically split by the river. Or if you were close to the University of Dayton, the city was split by crossing the Stewart street bridge, again, crossing the river. I don't know how all this came to be but Dayton as a whole was a beautiful city. Some of the most beautiful homes, the grandest in size and just all around beauty, where on the West Side of Dayton. But back to bussing. I enjoyed going to the old Wogaman school, then MacFarlane (now just an empty lot) for 7th and 8th grade. I made so many friends that grew up and lived on the West Side that I STILL am friends with to this day. I am almost certain that I would have never met these people and friends had I never been a white kid bussed to the West Side of Dayton. I was around and old enough to witness the crack epidemic of the 80's. As someone who didn't have family members or know anyone personally who did crack at all, it was easy to see that crack was destroying the black community. I'm not saying that no white people did it, it just seemed like just on the way to and from school in the mid to late 80's, there were alot more black people in the street/corners/curbs, etc "strung out than I saw on the East Side, and I lived in some of the "worst" areas in the East. Knowing what I know now, I truly believe that crack was somehow "put" in the black community to destroy people of color. Now unfortunately, it has come full circle. At least the past 10-15 years I've witnessed the East Side of Dayton getting more and more destroyed as far as urban decay. More vacant houses, EVERYWHERE. Junkies all over the place. But it's a totally different situation than the 1980's. This time it's White people addicted to Heroin, and Fentanyl. Or people thinking that they are getting heroin but it's actually fentanyl and dying. Or they actually want fentanyl. Another thing thats different than the crack epidemic in the Black communities, I truly believe that the government DID NOT put this Heroin and Fentanyl in the White community. I believe it just manifested because it was a cheap high and people just didn't want to believe just how powerful the addiction was. So now the city of Dayton is seeing it's 2nd huge drug epidemic in the 47 years since I've been in Dayton (minus the 8 years in the Air Force seeing the world). I still have mad love for this city that I was born in. I have family here, and I have 8 family members buried in Woodland Cemetery by the University of Dayton. 3 of those within 7 months of each other, and 5 within 5 and a half years. The sad part is 1 of those people is my baby brother, who died at the age of 24, from a heroin overdose. He was with 2 other "friends" at the time and instead of calling 9-1-1, they stole as much as they could fit into their car and then just left him there. My Dad found him the next morning when he drove by my grandpa's house (who just died 5 months before so my brother was staying at his house until it got sold) and the garage door which leads right into the house was wide open. This literally broke my Dad's heart. My Dad retired the year before (he took an early retirement from the government after working there for 32 years). Since my Dad was retired, and my Mom and him had been divorced for a few years at that point, all my Dad did was get up and cry all day and then go back to sleep. My Dad was a Marine who received a purple heart for getting wounded in combat in Vietnam. Once healed he went back to the front lines. I never saw my Dad cry in all my life until my little brother died. My Dad fell into a deep, dark depression. After doing this and constantly saying he just wanted to die so that he could hug my brother again, my Dad's health turned for the worse. 3 years after my youngest brother died at the age of 24, my Dad passed away at the age of 60. 60 fuckin years old. I don't know but to me 60 is too young, hell, 24 is wayyyy too young. I have had a fiance cheat on me when I was in Saudi Arabia, and a wife cheat on me after 10 years. I've had (like alot of people) to bury half of my immediate family in a 5-6 year span. Sorry, so very sorry for the novel that I replied to you. The moral of my reply is this to anyone that might read this;
I have had enough bad stuff happen to me while I have lives in the City of Dayton to want to put this city in my rearview mirror. The City of Dayton is falling apart, literally. On the East Side, West Side, North Side, and the South Side (even though I've never heard someone say that they are from the South Side of Dayton). But if you really take the time to look, there is some beautiful homes in Dayton. It doesn't matter where you go because they are everywhere, Eastside Westside, etc. Most importantly, there are some beautiful and very nice people in our city, ALL OVER, I truly mean that, Dayton used to be like North and South Korea, you all know what I'm talking about if you are over the age 30. If you were a certain color, you would stay on this side or that side, except for school. Fuckin Bullshit. I don't know when but like the Berlin wall that shit got tore down. Move freely, we have a constitutional right to do so. Anyway, I'm just glad that it has gotten somewhat better than it was when I was growing up, alot more work needs to be done in our "Gem" city. But as long as it's forward progress instead of moving backwards I guess we will take it. Much love and respect to all!!

Dayton born 1963, Dayton used to be a Industrial city, Where jobs were plenty, NCR, Frigidaire, General Motors, Mead. And so so many more to name. People moved here from other states to find good solid employment. When you got a job at one of these places you were pretty comfortable with money back then. My dad retired 40 yrs at GM when it was still GM. I miss all the good ole days never will forget. Dayton at one time was a booming place both, job wise an entertainment wise, Many stars came from Dayton an singing groups.
To many to name. Tears come to my eyes when I drive down some of the places that used to be great areas, now nothing but torn down buildings or buildings that are worn out an never taken away. One that recently hit hard was Good Samaritan Hospital. So Sad.

There's more than enough to keep me busy. I grew up in much fancier neighborhoods because my parents had survived the depression and they got college degrees and worked hard to have nice things. But I don't need all that, a simpler life is better for some of us. I'm not really bored; what lots of younger folk think of as "boring" is just an opportunity for me to play with my dogs, read a book or do some gardening. Life is sweet. I love Dayton, Ohio.

We lived in Residence Park in the early 50s. 413 Verona road. We walked to kindergarten and first and second grade. There was a park around the block with swings and slides. A candy store called the Boulder sold candy and little toys. It was a great place to live for a little kid. I was 6 when we moved away.

We'll see I know where I live on the east side of Dayton the hustle is the mom gets a new section 8 house or apartment which is free or damn near free and collects as much welfare as possible while the dad works under the table and isn't reported as living in the household so they pretty much have it made more people do that than sell drugs these days around here. Most of the people my wife and I grew up with (we're 29 and 31) are doing it that way. Playing the system. White folks black folks they all do it.

Born at Wright Patterson AFB in 1956. Raised in Fairborn, Ohio, but have been to Dayton many times. When I was a little girl my mom would take us downtown to shop at Rikes Dept. Store. And the two brothers from heatwave who past away Johnnie Wilder and Keith wilder lived in Bass courts as babies in Dayton ohio. But times were so different back then. @@R32R38 Its one of that last remaining projects left. They Torn Down the Projects I grew up in called Summer Courts, Also Edgewood Courts, Parkside, Hill Top, Are all gone. They all look pretty similiar because of they were own by Dayton Metropolitan Housing. Desoto Bass has always had the highest crime. in the City, The westside of Dayton is where you better be strapped.

I came here to Dayton, Ohio to retire after living in Washington, DC. Old North Dayton has some peaceful and very inexpensive neighborhoods for people my age. The real stats for crime are charted out on maps online so anyone can tell how safe or dangerous their neighborhood really is, and I'm much safer where I live now than I was in DC and I'm not paying a high rent or mortgage for the privilege of big city rudeness and snobbery.

I was born in 1971, raised in Dayton during a time where our people thrived on the west side, Grandparents still live right near the Bass. I moved away in the late 90's to Arizona, returning to Dayton in the mid 2000's, only to leave five years ago to New Orleans. I absolutely HATE the way my beloved city is today with no opportunities for our people, but at least I have memories of the good times.

I miss the days when I lived there too. I was there during the 70's, 80's and first part of the 90's. It was a great place to live. It was voted one of the best places to live back then. Everything fell apart when NCR, Frigidaire and GM left. It was the beginning of the end of Dayton.

Born and raised in dayton thru the 60s in Parkside homes glad to see it gone.got really bad late 70s until they tore it down. They turned the old liberal grocery store into a police department just for Parkside. Bad bad bad place

This is my home I lived in the bass for a few years but moved to miamisburge 20 mins away now. I lived on riverside and Gettysburg Dayton is ok alot of jealousy if you own nice things mostly cars other than that it's your typical black majority city really.

My friends used to make that trip up 75 daily. I'd get begged for rides up there a lot. This was 2002-2006. I still remember 35W exit then Abbey Ave and use a payphone there. Gettysburg, 3rd, Shell stations lol.
Sometimes we'd go up the back way up RT4 and stop at Napoleons, a little store or something

Had to move to Dayton from Dublin, OH for work. We moved to Beavercreek which is about 20 min east of downtown dayton. It's sad seeing how much Dayton has declined since the factories and companies shut down / left.

I was near Dayton only because the USAF sent me to WPAFB (Ohio). My first impression was wow, rust belt, jobs gone, factories closed. Seems like that in the industrial & inner city areas. I left after my tour was up.

Dayton is...well...Dayton lol. I live in Centerville a little down 675 from WPAFB. We have a great music scene around here but as far as "city life" goes not much other than UD and Brown street and the Oregon District. I don't hate it here by any means but I would certainly leave if my situation allowed me to.

I forgot all about that. I hadn't planned on going there, I went there at the last minute literally while I was passing through. I have someone who sends me addresses in situations like that. I wouldn't have had time to search for that email. This is only some of the address locations, was only there for about an hour.
