How Russia stokes tensions in Gagauzia to win Moldova | DW News

- European Union member states are currently discussing whether to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. The European Commission announced last week that both countries have met the necessary requirements to begin these talks....
However, the process is far from straightforward. In Moldova, pro-Kremlin parties are actively working to prevent the country from joining the EU.
DW reporter Grzegorz Szymanowski visited the autonomous region of Gagauzia, where a pro-Russian governor is staging a fight with the pro-EU Moldovan government.
For more detail on this, we talk to Grzegorz Szymanowski who produced the report in our show. He joins us from Riga.

It’s ironic that Russia might be paying Moldovan pensioners more than they pay their own pensioners.
I think it is ironic that Russia tries to increase its influence by acquiring lands that are economically destitute, aged, and that require funding of pensions. But Putin is secure in power as long as he doesn't cut pensions!
Same with Ukraine, as long as the pensioners speak Russian. Russia takes care of its own.
@@masterlightjames950 but why Russia pays peanuts to pensioners in Russia? The only ones who get decent money in russian standards are war veterans and military officers, the rest get ridiculous money. They pay to those who can be exploited for their own gain.
Also don't compare a country that is small and landlocked that doesn't have any resources with a country who has the most natural resources but who's people still live in poverty. Russia has created a reason for moldovans to be poor, not allowing them to unite with Romania and join EU. This is all about the F16s. They need long runways. Russia has just made such airbases in Ukraine unusable, and will continue to make them unusable. So where will the F16's be based? Moldova has a few suitable runways and bases. NATO is aiming to use these.

The treacherous governments in Romania have done nothing for Moldova and it is surprising that only 25% of Moldovans would like a reunion with the mother country. This while about 40% of Moldova's population left the country because of corruption and lack of future. This is actually the problem with the regions that do not want to listen to Chisinau. Also, Moldovan politicians have no interest in reuniting with Romania and losing power, they would perhaps prefer a back door entry into the EU, but also keep the advantages from Russia. That's what they've done for the last 33 years, like a calf sucking on two cows. I only see idealistic comments here.

With the strong identification for Russia in the Gagauzia and Transnistrian regions, trying to take Moldova into the EU is asking for trouble, and is unnecessarily destabilising. The wiser course of action is for Moldova to remain independent of both the EU/NATO and Russia.

In April 2024, a case was brought to court in Chisinau against Gutul and the head of the Shor party office, alleging that Gutul, serving as the party secretary, imported money daily from Russia from 2019 to 2022 to support the party's political activities, totaling almost 42.5 million lei ($2.34 million).

Should they join yes!!! ASAP In reality their should be both a western european union and a eastern european union. That is because there seems to be some different points of view on some issues. As it would be a newly created Ukraine should be allowed to join as well as all Eastern Bloc countries except Russia and Belarus. The alliance is more likely to stay together if your core beliefs are similar. Then you can create a group of leaders of nations. The E.U., the Eastern E.U., the U.S.. Then you can work on Asia and the U.S. should work on Central America and South America.
If there is to ever be a New World Government it should be built on the U.S. Constitution and its Amendments. It has proven to bring the most success to a nation. Moldova should reunite with Romania, just like east and west Germany did in 1990.
