  • The Iliad Summer School 2024: “Exploring Digital Twins of the Ocean - New Tools for Innovation and Sustainability” was an immersive and innovative program designed to explore the cutting-edge field of digital ocean modeling. The summer school brought together students, researchers, and professionals from diverse disciplines to examine the dynamic and transformative concept of digital twins in ocean science.
The course targeted graduate (Masters/PhD) students and early-career scientists in fields such as Marine Ecology, Oceanography, Environmental Monitoring, Remote Sensing, Marine/Oceanic Engineering, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Participants engaged with leading experts through a series of lectures and collaborative projects, gaining valuable insights into the latest technologies and methodologies used in creating and utilizing digital twins of the ocean.
    Summer School Program
The programme covered topics such as:
Data acquisition, processing, and management: Participants learned about the data life cycle, different types of data involved in a digital twin of the ocean, and how to make them interoperable.
Numerical modeling: This included ocean modeling with heterogeneous data and various tools for ocean data modeling.
Tools for creating a digital twin of the ocean: An introduction to some of the frequently used tools along the value chain of digital twins of the ocean, such as OGC standards, Python, Docker, and others.
ICT technology (platforms, AI, machine learning): The Iliad Summer School introduced participants to platforms like NextGEOSS, Global Ocean Platform, and GeoMachine.
Whether participants were marine scientists, data analysts, environmental policymakers, or technology enthusiasts, the Iliad Summer School 2024 provided a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field.
