ASL is surprisingly easy to learn. I suggest taking it at college if you ever plan to go to college (as most colleges require you to take another language).
Perhaps the hearing roommate had a deaf friend or relative growing up and learned ASL earlier. Many people who grow up in families with a deaf relative become interpreters later in life.
Goddamn. I’ve never heard of someone getting offended by sign language. It’s people like that piece of work in the second story that gives people like me, who has a disabled sibling, anxiety about even going out of the house with them. Anyone ever complains about my sibling with a stupid argument like that and this Aspy is decking them right then and there, full stop.
Amanda M I feel you, bro. Though I don’t have a disabled family member, I am very close to several people with disabilities, including my Deaf ASL teacher. His daughter is also Deaf, and a pretty famous streamer on Twitch. He’s very proud of her (we all are tbh), and likes to show off her content to his classes. One time, he was a bit angry when we came in, (which is odd since he is a VERY patient person) and when we asked why he showed us a post she made on Twitter, which included a video of her signing (with subtitles). Most of the comments were about ‘gang signs’, and how she shouldn’t do them. Some people are just so.. ugh.
I'm from the UK and this is a story from my University days. I was once out with a friend from my dorm, this was in the early 2000's when I was studying and my friend had a joint and spinal disability. His spine was extremely curved, so he couldn't stand up straight, as he was almost doubled over with his spines curve and his joints didn't work properly, so he couldn't walk very far at all and even then it was with crutches. Most of the time he was in a wheelchair. During this outing, to the local shops, we met a Mega Karen who was "Offended" at the sight of my friend in his wheelchair and made a scene. She was asked by nearby police to leave us alone and as we walked/wheeled away we could hear her STILL complaining that something as disgusting looking, as my friend, shouldn't be allowed outside to scar children and "normal" people like her. These idiots are everywhere.
I've noticed that people like this EM just like having an excuse to yell at people. They see someone do something innocuous, formulate outrage in their heads around it, and proceed to throw a fit. They don't actually care if it makes sense or not. I've been yelled at for the stupidest things by extremely outraged Karens. It's comical. The last one screamed non-stop at me as she crossed the crosswalk in front of my car because my front tires were on the white line (I was in a turn lane and had to stop abruptly when the light turned red and couldn't back up. It's a hard intersection to turn through.) It's a very wide crosswalk. She had _plenty_ of room to cross the street. She didn't even have to veer around my hood as she spit insults at me...she was able to walk straight from curb to curb. I just smiled and waved and told her to have a nice day.
Imagine the conversation between the kid and the mom... "Mom, they use their hands to speak because they can't hear that's so cool." "WHAT THEY OFFENDED YOU IN ANYWAY POSSIBLE? I'M GONNA GET THEM FIRED, EVEN IF THEY DON'T WORK HERE"
Tell the teacher! Snitches get stitches! Beat up your aggressor, get knifed later. Pay a bigger dude, thrown to the principal. Pants him in front of girls, never speaks again but either death glares or gets suicidal.
@@soulessslime433 *nods* Sooo true! Ignore the bully get, slammed in the head with a chair. Honestly, schools make so many excuses for kids bad behavior/take the easy way out the kids eventually they believe it until they mess with the wrong person in real life and get arrested.
If I had a child and they were attending that school, I would take my kid out of that school and put that school on blast. That school would be investigated for so much shit, it would be shut down before the next semester.
I cant stop thinking that the parents are at fault too, if you barely can afford that school, your kid will stand out in a bad way. In my country some people get to choose a college that the government will pay, it includes the more expensive ones, and the public ones. Most people chooses the expensive ones (is a program for the people that cant afford college themselves), then they come to the realization that the people who go there and can afford it, make fun of them, and cast them out, I still believe is pretty stupid to choose those places even when you know you wont fit, and most of all, you wont have all the equipment to work out your college degree, this is what I was thinking when that story came out. Of course, people should know better, but you don't have to be a guinea pig to understand that there is a problem
Tania - That's wonderful in theory, but the funny thing about people with a lot of money is they also tend to have a lot of influence/power. "Hello, police? The principal of this prestigious school hurt my daughter's feelings" wouldn't roll down the sidewalk, let alone fly. It wasn't until a large number of rich people got together and decided to do something that anything at all got done. Camilo - 100% agreed. They tried to do right by their daughter in getting her into a "good school", but didn't realize the social ramifications of being the "poor kid". My husband went to a school like that in California. Thankfully, he was a gentleman to the girls -> girls liked him (usually as a friend, but that's ok) -> guys didn't pick on him for fear of losing out with the girls. But he was always the "poor kid", so it was a struggle to be accepted.
Sadly private schools in DC are like that. And the public schools in DC are beyond awful. If you researched the private school options first though it would make way more sense to put your kid in a private school in Nova or something, Arlington for example has great private schools that would be like 15-30 minute commute on the train each morning and a lot of private schools just outside of the District itself even have buses to pick up kids and take them to a non DC private school.
@@Draiko1998 Not necessarily. I went to a private school when in high school. My parents definitely aren't rich (my aunt paying for half tuition), but the classmates never looked down on me for not being rich. It comes down to the entitled rich kids and entitled rich parents completely. Teach your child to not be entitled and they won't have the need to look down on someone not as affluent.

I've been singing songs for one-two years, and I have some questions. Does EM at 4:33 not know what being deaf is? Can she not grasp the fact that some people have problems hearing and/or can't hear at all? Does she not know that ASL - although it has it's own grammar - uses *English* terminology? Not to mention how PSE (Pidgin Signed English) uses direct grammar (regular English reading/writing grammar)? That lady just pisses me off. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Thanks I've been wondering if ASL had a form which uses English grammar given that BSL (just guess what the B stands for) has a form like that called SSE (Sign Supported English) but it doesn't specify anything about what sign language is actually being used for the vocabulary (is this the right word in this context?)

All too true about hearing these stories preparing you. My boyfriend got me a Switch for my Bday last September and i was reading and hearing do many stories of EMs and EKs trying to steal Switches. Its something i worried about constantly when i went out with it until a brilliant plan popped into my head that i have since acted upon. I wrote my Switches Serial number down in my phone and took a screenshot with the DATE showing. So now if some EM or even an EP (entitled person) tries to take it i have rock solid proof that its mine
You should definitely print that out and keep it in your wallet. Otherwise, the EP will claim you photoshopped it, or some nonsense. Because they are usually just knowledgeable enough to know photoshop exists, but have no idea how it works.
The last story: something like this actually happened to me! Here I'll just tell the story. A backstory I'm pretty young 12 years old and I've been saving up for 4 months just to get a gaming PC. I shaved up to around $2,500 and built my computer.it's really cool looking has RGB lighting water cooling system, with RGB ram. My mom's friend's son is two years younger than me and comes over to my house sometimes. He saw all of the cool features on my PC and went to go get his mother. Is mother tried to persuade me into giving him my $3,000 computer. I say no obviously and goes to tell my mother.surprisingly my mother agreed with her and told me that I should give her my PC.Once I told my mom how much money I spent on it and how ridiculous this isshe snapped back into common sense mode and told her that I wouldn't be giving her my computer that I built myself. She was angry and then storm downstairs to the party and then told everyone that I was selfish because I wouldn't give her my PC. Everyone at the party didn't really care and then she stormed home. I have never seen her since.
Why would your mother demand that you hand over something that you clearly love, no matter the cost? My mum accidentally donated a book I loved to charity that had originally cost me nothing (Garth Nix, world book day skinny book - we got vouchers from school for either 99p off a book or a special skinny book for free) and went out of her way to buy another copy for me. That's absolutely horrible of your mum, whether she changed her mind or not :/
Dang, I'm 16 and currently building up money for a new pc, my current one is too weak to edit a video 1 hour long, and have currently got 200$ for it, but after reading this, think I just going to use all the money on buying light novels and stick with my current one XD
So proud of this kid. And their parents. Not only saved the money but built the PC. And then, handled very weel the situation and at the same time, protected his belongings. I'm just worried with his selfsteem. I mean, little dude, it's NOT a bad move to do your games while there is family there... look what they can do, anyways, but, well, this must be discussed with your parents. And about the "mind" something videos, it's not true! What you do for your recreation is as valid as studying, working, etc.

Goddamn. I’ve never heard of someone getting offended by sign language. Anyone ever complains about my sibling with a stupid argument like that and this Aspy is decking them right then and there, full stop.

I feel you, bro.
Hold my beer. 😉
@@neilprice513 People like that shouldn't be allowed to reproduce because they are the kind of people that would abuse their own disabled child

It is time to make a dedicated emergency karen protocol.
If I had a child and they were attending that school, I would take my kid out of that school and put that school on blast. That school would be investigated for so much shit, it would be shut down before the next semester.
Tania Bams I googled DC private school sexual misconduct and found an article from The Washington Post. All I could say was "whoa" and "wow".
