So thanks for posting this...very helpful 👌 ☺
I have a 2017 Impala, and I wondered what the "M" on my shifter meant. I know how to drive stick, but this is all new to me. I looked everywhere on how use this feature but no results. So, thanks on showing me how, even if its on a Mazda, I assume its all the same. Thanks, man. Late.
I don’t understand why a lot of people hate on automatic transmissions when a good few of them have manual modes. The only difference between this and an actual manual transmission is that you don’t have the need for a clutch pedal to disengage the engine from the drivetrain.
So I have a Mazda that has this feature, and I have to ask - is there any real advantage to this or is it just a driving preference? At what point would it make sense to use the manual transmission on an automatic car? Can I preserve the longevity of the transmission by going manual in certain situations? I've never driven manual, but I'd like to try this feature. Seems like its just something you would do for fun, but are there any other advantages?
It’s highly beneficial if you’re going up or down hills. One of the main reason to use it is to utilize “engine braking” to ensure your brakes don’t overheat especially when you’re descending a mountain or going through bendy roads. Using brakes on every single corner will make it wear faster and it might overheat to the point it may cause brake failure. You can shift down to 3rd or 2nd and let go of the throttle when you go through corners, it will slow down the car without using the brakes. Your car will make some interesting noises but don’t worry, that’s just it keeping itself within the high revs. It doesn’t damage your transmission nor your engine; contrary to popular beliefs. :)
Meor Hariz thanks for this info!! i like checking out the mazdas around my area for sale and they all have this feature. I can’t trust myself to stick shifting. Especially on a highway LOL
Best part: no need for a clutch like on an actual manual car :) So for people who feel like driving manual in an automatic, an automatic transmission car that has the feature gives you the best of both worlds, without the clutch of course :D
I can note that when you downshift you don´t do any match revs, is that ok for the gear box once there is a significant increase in revs (when driving fast)?
Automatics are a bit sloppy on the road. The braking distance is too abrupt and jerky, and I notice with automatics I get more irritated with other drivers more frequently. I feel manual transmission gives a smoother drive overall, and better braking distance that feels more transitional into idle (when you need to use your brakes to stop), and back into motion. Also they are better on gas mileage. I personally don't have a manual transmission on my current car, though but drive it like a manual.
what do you mean when you say the braking distance is jerky? like are you braking a little late, is the brake very sensitive, is all of the above happening when your in manual mode in your automatic transmission?
I agree, auto shifts faster so it a less smooth experience, driving in manual mode is so much smoother, I don't feel the need to break so much and it's so satisfying to upshift
I have a question some friends of mine said that using the automatic transmission like a manual will be bad or for the transmission and I’m scared of using it what do you guys think or is it true or what can I do so it never go bad
I have driven a manual car most of my life, now I am driving an automatic with the automatic to manual feature. So my question is, is it safe to start in automatic and then switch to manual while driving and switch back to automatic drive (I tend to miss driving a manual sometimes and need this)?
In a automatic you cant screw things up.. even in the "manual" mode.. you just tell your computer what gear you wanna be in, if the computer isnt happy with it, it sais "scew your command" and shifts itself again..
Hello, I have two questions for you? 1. Is it going to damage the gear box if i continuously drive in manual mode in long run? 2. My car automatically downshifts the gear and i hardly downshift the gear. Is it ok? please reply
For people that want replicate the clutch like he said just ease off the gas for the next gear and when you wanna power down shit rev the gas a bit before you shift down . As a guy who drive stick fr that’s the closest feeling to a clutch driving it that way
@@ラッセル9728 yes actually, when you do what he says about letting off then changing gears it sounds like a manual, still feels like shifting in semi-automatic but you can get good at making it sound like a manual

Do we have to release the accelerator while shifting from D to M ? Second. Going at 80km/hr in D if I shift to M will it go to M1 or M5? Finally is it allowed to shift from D to M while driving? Really basic questions, sorry for that.
I'd check the actual car manual. The option to manually shift gears, in most cars, isn't so you can drive like a manual; it's really there when you want to limit the gear for some reason. Snow, towing, hills, hard corners, etc. Not really intended to mimic a manual car in most cases. Some sports/muscle cars have paddle shifters for that reason but most cars have it for more specific purposes
My 2011 Kia sorento has this feature. I wanna learn to use it but how do you know when to shift gears? Do I do it at a certain speed or wait for a sound?
I’ve heard you don’t need to let go of thr gas while shifting and I do both, however letting go makes my car jerk forward. While shifting down you should hit the brakes or else your rpm will sky rocket. I say try both and practice it, normally you want to up gears 2,500-3000 rpm and downshift takes a bit more practice
I have a 2009 Volvo C30 which has a similar set up as this video. It would have been helpful to have the camera close up showing gear selection, rpms, and speed

So...just to clarify you can still leave foot on gas while shifting gears? I know you said it feels more like manual when you take your foot off gas, but I don't want mess something up lol
This can't be safe for an Auto transmission though to keep down shifting can it? Wouldn't it be better to switch to drive while stopping? Then back to manual
My Benz C230 goes straight into 4th. I have to head it to the left four times to bring it into first. I was wondering why they did it that way maybe because if you’re going like 50 miles an hour and hit it to the left’s mission by going straight into 1st gear at 60mph lol
3.16 You didn’t have an exhaust so we couldn’t hear it lol. With an exhaust, If you let off the gas you can clearly hear the pause in exhaust tone similar to the real manual transmission.
