FUN FACT: General Zod actor Terrence Stamp played the voyce of Jor-El in the WB/CW series SMALLVILLE, and played Supreme Chancellor Valorum in a little known independent film called THE PHANTOM MENACE.

These movies have a complicated history. Richard Donner shot Superman I and II at the same time. The producers never gave him a budget or a schedule. As it went on the relationship deteriorated. Eventually they decided to concentrate on One and move the "turning back time" sequence from the end of Two to the end of One. Originally One ended with the rocket going into space, exploding and releasing the three villains. It was a cliffhanger. They thought the world-turning would be more exciting.
One came out and was a hit. But the producers decided to fire Donner and bring in Richard Lester to finish. For Lester to get sole director credit, he had to direct 51% of the movie so scenes were rewritten and reshot. Lester also put in a lot of slapstick comedy which altered the tone. The producers also chose to eliminate Brando so they didn't have to give him any more money.
Two came out and was a hit.
But over the years Donner fans wanted to see what his original vision would be like so they campaigned Warner Bros who eventually put up some money and they cobbled together the "Donner Cut" which is what you are watching. You end up with Brando restored and the slapstick cut out and the turn-back-time segment where it was supposed to be originally. Brando and Hackman only worked for Donner because their scenes were shot early in production.
It is an interesting experiment and look at what might have been. Watch the theatrical Two and close your eyes through the slapstick. Three is okay. Four sucks.
Hope this helped it make more sense.

I think it was said the '...not god...Zod' line was improv.
They also changed the ending. In the original superman gives lois a 'magic kiss' that makes her forget....(no joke).

Please watch the theatrical cuts--those were the hit versions of these movies. The theatrical cut of Superman II is especially good and its editing and ending are a bit stronger, IMO.
Supernan III was not as good but it had Richard Pryor in it and humor and Kryptonite makes a comeback.
Need to watch III--one of the villains is....an evil Superman! And Chris Reeve is awesome in 3 roles--Superman, Clark and evil Superman.
Later,, there is huge fight between Clark Kent and Evil Superman. It is definitely like the 60s and 70s Superman comics.
    BTW, great reactions!

The special effects for the original 78 film, in my opinion, where better. I saw the 78 version in the theater and we did indeed believe in the tag line that a man could fly.

The biggest difference is that the "theatrical cut" did not have Marlon Brando back. The studio forced reshoots due to the amount of money Brando wanted. So he was cut from the film and instead we got to see Cal-El's mother. There were also some very silly moments including a power that was completely ridiculous where he throws the shield logo on his chest. LOL. Still very much worth watching, but I prefer the Donnor Cut.

I actually think both the Lester and Donner versions of SUPERMAN II are excellent, I think the Salkinds were some of the most inept filmmakers, and were also a bit of con artists. The way they did Richard Donner was very dirty. They expected him to film two Superman movies simultaneously, and to film them new technology had to be invented, which caused production delays and the fim to go over budget, then they paused production on the sequel to focus on the first one. Donner turns out one of the highest grossing movies, and, the best super hero movie ever made, yes, even better than the best of the MCU, and their "thanks" to him for weathering the storm they put him through and turning out an excellent movie wasto fire him, and hire a new director to finish off the sequel. Morgot Kidder had actually spoken out considerably about the Salkinds, which is why she was almost completely written out of SUPERMAN III. On one of the discs for the first movie, I think it's the special editio😅n disc, there is a three part in depth documentary on the making of the first one and partial making of the second one. Also, the Richard Lester cut of SUPERMAN II is actually equally good as the Donner cut, and is considerably different enough to be also worth watching, and probably doing a reaction on.

Superman 4 elements are used in the Justice League animated series. The first episode has Earth getting rid of Nuclear weapons and trusting Superman which did happen in Superman 4. Nuclear man is actually a version of Bizarro. A bad version of the character though. Superman 3 tried to do a version of Brainac but that was done badly too.

    1. I saw this when it first came out, IMVHO it's better than the first one.
    2. Lois should have fingered out Clark is Superman from the first movie.
    3. Regarding Superman III, Richard Pryor (who was in it) on the Johnny Carson supposedly to promote it, said that Superman III sucked, and I agree with him. Do that one at your own risk.
    4. I'm a little bummed that Valery Perine didn't get more love.😍😋😈
    5. Am I the only one to think Lois is a bit of a bimbo? I guess not🙄
    6. He went through all that, and only got to "hit it" so briefly.😪
    7. Robin Williams 😇was Reeves' best friend and was at his bedside when he passed😇
    8. The theatrical cut is better.
