Loving your video's, thanks for sharing the knowledge you have and practice patterns you have come up with. I was with Woody at the Abersold jazz camp in 76? He showed us some very cool "warm ups"! Also he and Joe Henderson performed each evening. Blew my mind!! I am about to order your book/books. I teach at Cal Arts in Los Angeles

Jean Dury. Being extremely meticulous, I would like to mention a mistake in this Tube. Exercise 2 at 5.15 is not what you play and exercise 3 at 5.35 also but transcribe at 5.15.

Woody showed my exercises, I didn't ask him about his warmup but assumed this was part of it. Odd that they were so symmetrical and Woody's playing was symmetrical.
But it just goes to show you how rooted he was in basics and technique along with a fantastic mindset for improvising!

Just bought both of your books and I have found them very useful. There is plenty of material here to keep you busy improving your playing for years! Really have been enjoying the chromatic exercises. I like the way they work seamlessly from low to high (by breathing through your nose a la Caruso) so that you don't reset for the different registers. They're a real "face fry"! Haha! Just curious, did Woody show you those or are they your own?
    Thanks Man!

How did you connect with Woody as a student?
I used to try to emulate his phrasings.
As a guitar player, I found his melodic and rhythmic note choices incredible.
      Does he still teach?
Lastly, did he give you any methods or approaches ala Barry Harris?

      Thx Marcus,
I've taken screenshots to test the readability and if take the shot while viewing full screen the screenshot is legible but a little blurry (some better than others).
The Chromatic, Three Little Words and 4th/5th Exercises are all available in my book "A Lyrical Approach to Jazz Improvisation" in book and ePub book form (in great resolution) available here: www.richievitale.com/store
The money is used to make more videos and to upgrade and maintain camera and equipment and I'm thinking of writing a third book (3 years worth of work).
If I decide to put up all the PDFs people have requested I would have to do it on a subscription level. I may eventually do that, but I'd like to make a few more videos.

I feel like I'd like you to be more explicit concerning what about these exercises is improving your range and endurance. It might be obvious to some based on what you shared, but to me I must have missed it completely.

    • @RichieVitale
      @RichieVitale  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Benjamin, I may not have been clear enough in this video as there was a lot of material to cover, and some of it gets left on the cutting room floor :-)
1:00 minute in I mention the exercises Woody played covered the full range of the trumpet.
It's important to start mid-range but I do often play in the upper register to keep my range intact during a practice session, though I'm not obsessive about it. I think tone is, as always has been, my first consideration.
4:20 min into the video I speak about a method Woody showed me . . . that being starting where you left off in an ascending exercise. Jeff Stout also showed me this technique using the Schlossberg Method Book.
6:00 min in I mention you picking your own personal equipment (mouthpiece and trumpet) to make the best of your endurance and range.
In my book "A Lyrical Approach to Jazz Improvisation" I mention how I practice these exercises (or any exercises I use for range and endurance) and I may not have mentioned it here. That is:
To keep the mouthpiece in place and not shift it as you play higher. That is achieved by breathing thru the nose or quickly thru the sides of the mouthpiece while keeping it in the same place on your lips.
      I hope this helps . . . .
