Roy has such a magic, floating groove-I’ve been digging Roy since I was in high school (late 70s) and I STILL can’t figure out how he creates that rhythmic magic carpet and excitement-it’s magic. He’s a magician.

What a fantastic segment. 8 minutes was way too short for a legend like Roy Haynes; I could watched a 30 minute video of those two cats just chatting and jamming. This needs to be a regular segment even if it is only uploaded to TH-cam. Great work to everyone that produced this.

God I loved this so much. Just watching batiste do what he knows. I feel like this learning how to use him better, let him play to his strengths instead of trying to mold him into a standard sidekick. When they do it right, he can bring something totally original to the show. I'd love to see a segment like this make the air, but with a more comedic tone. It would be awesome having interview segments where instead of Colbert interviewing the guest, it's Jon in a pre taped segment.

I read Roy's interview in Modern Drummer years ago. I think he moved from Boston to NY in 1941-42 and played the original Birdland and was a part of the Harlem Big Band Jazz scene from the start. Just one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time. If I could go back in time, I would definitely go see the Bird, Monk, Mingus, Haynes Quarte!!!
