CCP don't care! They will just send their fishing boats to other seas (such as within the EEZ of Ecuador (including the famous Galapagos islands), Argentina, East & West African states, etc. and deplete the fish stocks there. Unless countries become more forceful, such as sinking the Chinese boats, in protecting their fishing areas & EEZ (as they are entitled to, under UNCLOS) then the CCP will continue to lawlessly their illegal practices.

Yes, China has built artificial islands in the South China Sea:
      Scale
China has built artificial islands on seven coral reefs in the Spratly Islands, creating almost 3,000 acres of new land.
      Method
China uses a process called land reclamation to build the islands. This involves dredging sand, sediment, and sometimes rock from the sea floor and depositing it in shallow water areas. The dredged material is then compacted to create new land.
      Purpose
China claims the islands are for improving living conditions for people stationed there, and to provide aid to ships passing through the area. However, some analysts say the islands are military bases with runways, air defenses, and long-range radar installations.
7 islands together form China South China Sea government.
This is the status quo. China has the largest navy in the world. No issue for self defense. China is here to stay. This is the reality.

As regards the USA, they occupied actual islands (not underwater reefs) which they took from the Japanese Empire during a war which Japan started. Japan officially relinquished any claim to those territories in 1946 and ceded them to the USA. Perfectly legal. Any questions?

This video tells one truth is that Vietnam controls much larger number of small islands in South China Sea, and China is trying to catch up.
Why less conflict between Vietnam and China but more between Philippines and China?
    One reason: USA.
Philippines allows USA to setup military bases on its territory ,which become serious threat to China and its goal to unite Taiwan.
As for building islands , Vietnam has been making solid progress recently but few reports about it.

  • @nobodysfool-c7y

Watch the video from 2:00 to 3:00. See the number of outposts in the most contested area, the Spratly Islands: Vietnam 50, Philippines 9, China 7, Malaysia 5. Out of the 7, China has 4 bases built on them while Vietnam is actively doing the same on their outposts without problems. If you look at this objectively the reasons for China doing this is to 1: Secure the most important trade route from China to the world (which the video mentioned) and 2. Extend the defense perimeter beyond its coast. China learnt from its past when gunboats from a faraway empire closed off its sea forcing it to surrender the lands. Now look at how the current empire from faraway extends its defense perimeters way way beyond its coast in addition to carrier strike groups that can go anywhere, you will understand reason #2. These outposts and existing constructions are not going to disappear or change hands, and they are grouped closed together with possible overlapping supply routes. May all neighbors talk it out peacefully without instigation from someone faraway.

Here’s a good analogy for this. Imagine modern Italy today starts claiming all of the Mediterranean sea with no regard for UNCLOS or international laws despite being a signatory and a beneficiary of it for decades, and their argument for why these rules don’t apply to this dispute is based off of “historical claims” of Roman Empire maps… All of Europe, Middle east, and North Africa would’ve been against this. But that is exactly what is happening in South China Sea, the difference is they actually have the military might to enforce this claim and the fact that too many countries are economically dependent on them. Until enough countries can decouple with China, they know no one’s gonna stop their might makes right foreign policy in the region.

@@John_Smith_86 I already stated what the difference is, and that is their combined military and economic power which Italy is nowhere close to. The point is, that at the end of the day China’s claim is essentially backed by military strength, numbers, and economic size. Their ‘historical claims’ is not only vague and disputed by all the countries in the region but even those outside it (europeans colonisers and sailors), knows China never legitimately owned SCS. What their ‘historical claims’ essentially is, is merely a distraction/smokescreen, or a crutch to cause confusion and buy themselves time. They used to claim the 12 dash line, then 11, then 9, and now 10 dash line… They can’t even be consistent about it and it really makes their “historical” claims quite questionable.

@@pipiqiqi4010 Laying a “claim” vs actually owning that claim is different. Any country can “claim” that all of Antarctica belongs to them, or we can go back to the colonial period where any European settler can claim all of the Americas. But these are empty ‘claims’, you have to actually live on it, settle, and build outposts to prove you’ve actually owned those territories long before these rules existed. The problem is, China did none of those, they only did it on Hainan island or near their coasts but nowhere as far as spratly’s or scarborough. No one disputes the fact that Europe had more naval presence, power, and claim in SCS during the colonial period (1500-1900), none of them had any records of China owning SCS including the muslim traders who freely sailed and traded there. It has always been an international water for centuries not one country owned all of it just like the Mediterranean sea is.
They even used to claim Indonesia’s Natuna islands, which is conveniently beside the malacca strait. They got scared after being threatened of war by the Indonesian navy and all of a sudden their 11 dash line became 9-dash line. Really convenient how their lines changes depending on the situation.

Of course "The Philippines has every right ". But the issue is never about "right" - it's about power. How is Philippines supposed to defeat China? The European colonialists, for example, had also "illegally squatted" in the territory called North & South America. Since the indigenous people were unable to resist the "squatting" and defeat the "squatters", the "squatters" took over, changed the fact on the ground, and give birth to new sovereignties such as Canada and the United States. Even today, 500 hundred years later, many indigenous people are still angry, still calling the Americans "squatters", still dismissing America's sovereignty as illegal. But the reality is they had already been pushed into the "Indian Reserves"- Nobody cares about their complaints and Americans are here to stay.
Likewise, if Philippines cannot physically defeat China, all talks about "illegal" or "squatting" are just jokes the Chinese will laugh at.
China' might is far more relevant a determinant of what's really going on on the ground than Philippines' right. Keyboard warriors' sarcastic talks have no impact on China's conducts and those conducts are what's changing the reality.
(I am from Canada- I have no love of China but reality is reality - it's only changed by Power. Talks are just empty words. That's the sad truth.)

These occupied territory in South China Sea was supposed to go back to China (ROC). This was before the civil war saw the victory of the PRC over ROC forces for leadership of China. ROC retreated to Taiwan. All the other claimants at the end of WW2 were colonies of France, Britain, or US. China (PRC) inherited Taiwan's (ROC) claims (because Taiwan was and is China) and today PRC is enforcing these claims. By the way, French and English documents fully acknowledged this territory was Chinese territory hundreds of years ago when they first entered the area and took over the S. China Sea themselves.

This video conveniently omitted the most recent joint communique and positions of ASEAN (sans Philippines) regarding the territorial disputes in this area, rejecting USA's machinations. IT also did not note the countless attempts by the USA and its allies, in particular Australia in trying to engineer fear and anti-China coalitions amongst the ASEAN nations, but are consistently et with a resounding response of "do not create trouble in our backyard" . All such external attempts failed to gain traction because ASEAN nations can see the geopolitical brinkmanship the USA is trying to forment. Just string keywords like South China Sea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, USA and Australia, and take a read of the room
ASEAN and China's consensus has always been on of respecting the status quo and maintaining peace where possible. But add too that USA's belligerence and machinations around China, its not difficult to understand China's sudden interest in cementing their hold on what their already de facto controlled. Long time observers would have tracked China's expedited construction of military installations to the Obama administrations pivot (shift in USA interventionist policy) to the East. In fact, one can also spot the coincidence in Philippines reactionary responses to break the status quo during after this shift in US policy to ring fence China. In fact, the ROC (or Taiwan) created and still maintains a eleven-dash line, while China did not specifically start to patrol the area vigorously before this US threat.
You just have to read Singapore's Mahbubani's and his US diplomatic counterpart's memoirs and diplomatic accounts on the root cause. One thing that the video got right is that when it comes to territorial disputes, no country is rational, China and Philippines included.
But coming from each nations' perspective, Philippines is citing a 1980s UNCLOS to stamp its rights, while China is citing its history beyond just 1930s to stamp its territory. So each has its own. This video only presents a lopsided perspective of the South China Sea disputes.
To really fathom the depth, length and breath of the whole issue and seek the point of contention of each of the claimants, then they should study this, Google, " Diplomacy on the Rocks: China and Other Claimants in the South China Sea "
Hasty generalization based on the narratives promoted by this video is a recipe for prejudice and war. This video reads like the same script of American-geopolitical fear-mongering, radicalization and anti-China rhetoric. Case to point, they omitted the fact that the largest island with military installations in the Spratly, Itu Aba, are held by the Taiwanese military, as well as the Vietnamese held installations, are also inside "Philippine's EEZ"

Pretty pathetic that Business Insider didn't see fit to note that all the South China Sea claimant states don't limit their claims to their EEZs. The Philippines, for example, claims the entire Spratly Island group of islands, many of which are outside their EEZ, and within the EEZ of other countries. Or how Vietnam claims around 70-80% of the South China Sea. I guess facts don't matter when trying to claim China is the bad actor.

Vietnam, China and Taiwan had its claim established way before the Phiilppines made its first claim during Marcos Sr. 1978.

EEZs aren't sovereign territory, and they do not belong to the country which has them. UNCLOS said nothing about sovereign territorial claims, which is why everyone signed it.
But if you want to get into particulars, every single South China Sea claiment state claims and occupies territory in another country's EEZ, including the Philippines and Vietnam. Also, When the Philippines signed UNCLOS in 1986, they invoked UNCLOS article 298, banning all forced arbitrations, and so did China in 2006. In 1956 Beijing protested Philippine remarks that the South China Sea islands in close proximity to Philippine territory should belong to the Philippines. China's Declaration on the territorial Sea, promulgated in 1958, says in part,
The breadth of the Territorial Sea of the People's Republic of China shall be twelve nautical miles. This applies to all territories of the People's Republic of China, including the Chinese mainland and its coastal islands, as well as Taiwan and its surrounding islands, the Penghu Islands, the Dongsha Islands, the Xisha Islands, the Zhongsha Islands, the Nansha Islands and all other islands belonging to China which are separated from the mainland and its coastal islands by the high seas.
China reaffirmed its claim of sovereignty over the Zhongsha Islands in its 1992 Law on the territorial Sea and the Contiguous Zone. China claims all the islands, reefs, and shoals within a U-shaped line in the South China Sea drawn in 1947 as its territory. Scarborough Shoal lies within this area.
