Love the Check Out videos. Never have enough time (or money) to check out all the potential gems. Keep up the good work. Immensely enjoying the content.
I'm rather amazed that you played this demo and made a whole video on it. I am very happy to see Chinese and wuxia games getting more mainstream representation in the occident.
I think the language barrier often still remains a problem. Many Chinese games still have a lot of translation issues. Often they release on Steam without an English localization, and it only gets added in a later patch, and often it's of rather low quality. For example, I'm quite fond of the game Tale of Wuxia, but the translation is undeniably wonky. Even the Steam page looks very dodgy, and the game appears as "侠客风云传(Tale of Wuxia)" in my Steam library instead of just having an English title. It's a shame, cause I'm sure there's plenty of undiscovered cool Chinese games out there. And at the least, the translation of this game seems pretty alright so far.
So nice to see someone else do their own adoption of Octopath's art style, but with seemingly a pretty big gameplay shift. Also Mortisimal.. You're a machine or something? How are you pumping out so many videos, wow.
I was hoping it would be lower fantasy Wuxia than higher power level Xanxia, but still interested in this kind of setting which doesn't get enough coverage in the western market. Enjoyed the demo, though there was some rough edges that I hope they improve on for launch. Looking forward to playing this on SteamDeck
@@DoggyP00 Yeah, I was also under that impression, definitely a little disappointing if that isn't the case. The Xanxia stuff is a litter more dense and hard to get into if you're not familiar with it IMO, and I also prefer more grounded stuff.
Thanks for the video. An open world would be impressive. Linearity can break RPGs and make them veiled puzzles. Onward to 200k. All glory to the algorithm.
I hope the localization is good. There are a lot of new and promising chinese dev, but as for now most of them really is stuck with bad localization like japanese game back in the 90s.
I've been on a bit of a China lore streak lately since I've been watching Kingdom, so this definitely peaked my interest. I see this either being really good or a massive disappointment, but looking forward to its release anyway.
If you're interested in Chinese RPGs you HAVE to play the absolute classic Sword and Fairy released all the way back in 1998. An absolute classic and there's a Fan sub English patch floating somewhere. It spawned an equally popular TV adaptation as well and is every Chinese millennial's childhood nostalgia.
I personally don't think it's a very good game, but the nice thing is that there is an open source implementation for it called SDLPAL. It's ported to a ton of platforms, so you can play it on all desktop platforms, but also on your phone, even your 3DS or PSP.
I'm sure this is a joke but I have always felt that jrpg is about the style not the country of origin. Dark souls is an RPG from Japan but is not a jrpg. Edge of eternity is an rpg made in France and it is a jrpg
Get familiar with cultivation. It's all over animation from China and I'll bet it will be an influential game mechanic. (Note: I don't play phone games so I'm probably way behind on how ubiquitous cultivation already is in the West).
I just can't get into TB or sidescollers after too many decades of them Mort. Every now & then I try, but the older I get, the shorter my attention span becomes, as I've turned into a Grumpy Old Bastard (GOB tm) gamer! Hey, I should start a channel for my kind! ;) Much prefer RT with pause or just arpgs these days, eh. Some days I'm lucky to get 10mins of uninterrupted gaming, if any... :(.
I've said ever since the release of Octopath that I'm not very fond of the graphical style of that game. The idea is solid, but the execution is not good. The devs just BLAST every scene with extremely overdone lighting effects, vignette effects, shimmering, etc etc, and it ends up looking awful and blurry. Everything is either under of overlit. And I think they dropped the ball once again in Triangle Strategy by making the same mistakes while further blurring the various sprites. So I'm a little disappointed that this pretty mimic the EXACT same style as Octo. That being said, this still looks like a fun game. At the very least, I think the gameplay and story here looks a lot more interesting than Octopus Traveler, which I personally thought was an incredibly overrated game.
Ooh lucky me. Looked at TH-cam just in time for a Mortismal video hot off the presses.

I'm really looking forward to this one. It looks like it's gonna be a real treat for all wuxia/xianxia fans.

I don't think Octopath art style is a thing. It's how JRPG looked ever since game boy era
If you like these types of games then play suikoden 1 and 2 and also Eiyuden Chronicle
Played the Demo on Steam Next Fest, It honestly impressed me and I just cannot wait for the full release .
Are you going to do a 100% of this?
Will do, Mort!
Any plans to do a "Review after 100%?"

I would call this lower power level wuxia myself...
@@DoggyP00 Wait til you get closer to the end game. It's not quite cultivation immortals, but the power levels are very much over the top

def on the wishlist. thanks for reviewing.
Loved the demo. Great 60/70/80"s martial arts movie vibes.
Looks interesting for sure.
I will keep my eyes peeled
sounds really tempting
Looks pretty interesting, espeically that battle system, added it to my wishlist lets hope it lives up to it's potential!
OMG! I love the genre and tried the demo last night because of this video, can't wait to buy the game
Meridian system seems really shallow, but I'm loving the flow so far.
I'll keep an eye on this one, looks promising.

If you like the HQ2D aesthetics, you might like Octopath Traveller I / II (just released) as well.
Octo 1 is one of the best games ever made
Octopath Traveller II releases Feb. 24th. Best Buy has the steelbook as a incentive to purchase from them.
@@johnwiser71 Gotcha, was under the impression with all the reviews it was already out.
Oh this looks cool, gonna give a go right now. Waiting for Like A Dragon: Ishin! To unlock in 3 hours at 7am. The combat demo is out on Steam
RPG game with fishing. Game of the Year Nominee.
Looks fun!
I hope the localization is good. There are a lot of new and promising chinese dev, but as for now most of them really is stuck with bad localization like japanese game back in the 90s.
Looks damn good! Good show sir🥳
Holy waffles this one is a treat for the eyes.
Looks like that "Live A Live" game that came out last year.
Octopath traveller was the biggest gaming surprise in 10+ years for me
If Octopath Traveller did that for you then Chained Echoes will blow your mind.
Very interesting chill game.
I'm an absolute sucker for games that look like this. Instant buy for me. Just so pleasing to look at.
Man so many good games targeted for 2023 release. Hope it releases sooner than later so it doesn't get overshadowed.
I need some death animations for those fights.
I've been on a bit of a China lore streak lately since I've been watching Kingdom, so this definitely peaked my interest. I see this either being really good or a massive disappointment, but looking forward to its release anyway.
I was able to recommend this to you. It's Chinese fantasy wuxia and very authentic to boot
I’m a sucker for good pixel art

HELL YEAH IN THE FIRST 250
Strong Octopath vibes
So if a Japanese rpg is a jrpg, then is a Chinese rpg a crpg? :P
I'm sure this is a joke but I have always felt that jrpg is about the style not the country of origin. Dark souls is an RPG from Japan but is not a jrpg. Edge of eternity is an rpg made in France and it is a jrpg
Looks awesome. Is it coming to console?
I had played the demo and generally liked it. One criticism I have is that I was underwhelmed by the meridian system just being stat buffs.

Are there some JRPGs that is fully voice acted?
Really fun game, spend about 20 hours on the demo.
I'll buy any half-decent wuxia or xianxia game. Love it
Release it!
Pls review fear and hunger
Looks kinda like radiant historia
It looks similar to Octopath Traveler.
I would be good if this game on nintendo switch play its like octopath traveler
it looks BEAUTIFUL, and the Wuxia flavor is a huge plus. I wonder if there are any plans to include PvP?
Reminds me very much of Octopath.
Great game also in real time you only control the main character with ai controlling the rest.
oh this was 100% made in Godot 3.1
Will the game collects my personal data?
free comment.
Promising apart from the pixelarts. Is this an Octopath Traveller rip off?

Early, but not first. :D
I'm so tired of 2D chessboards, bring on more xcom style maps 😢
Love the artstyle though

I don't love the artstyle, tbh. Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, the Live A Live remake... I'm getting a bit tired of it.
look good and interesting, a final fantasy tactic with sword and china jiang hu lore
