  • Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson tells us her plans to solve: the skills gap, teacher's pay needs, early years childcare provision, further education underfunding, the children's services crisis, the rising demand for SEN services, the forgotten third and how we can make sure schools prepare young people for the world.

From a purely rational perspective - it seems that investing into secondary and FE education and reducing the number of universities and places would be a good start. Local secondaries and FE can provide local mini-universities where you can do all sorts of qualifications already and most people study at least until they are 16 and many to 18. Universities just want to keep charging more and more whilst sidelining students and focusing exclusively on their publication record and research grant awards. For universities it’s about a guaranteed income, spending on buildings, prestige, and not facing any consequences for mismanagement. But secondaries and FE colleges do an amazing job for more people and focus entirely on teaching.

A lot of jobs that require a uni degree currently don't actually need a degree. The 3 year degree is often just a way for employers to figure out who is smart and hardworking Vs lazy and not having matured sufficiently yet.
With a bit of incentive, employers can provide a lot of on the job training.
E.g. a 2-3 year training contract subsidized by government followed by 2 year contract at high pay (keeps employer honest) but where young person cannot leave without penalty. So kids turn 23/24 with 0 debt and and 4-5 years relevant experience to set them up on their career

There are some universities more focused on research, but tbh that is a primary function of theirs so I have no issue with that. There are also some that are more focused on teaching students and they're great as well. The worse ones deliver on neither and essentially just offer a 3 year deferment on adulthood for the bargain price of £60k. That's where the money is really being wasted

@@plagiarisedwords Thats very industry specific. Go to almost any engineering company in the country and theyll tell you they have more success (longevity, ability, integration) hiring from highschools than they do from universities. Students from uni have a very warped mindset of the world that highschool students don't have yet.

I totally disagree that you can’t spot children on free school meals. They tend to be the only ones getting food. Most kids who are not on free school meals take Sandwiches because the cost of school meals is so high.

Apparently the breakfast clubs don't extend to special schools, so my son won't benefit from that.

"pay decreased over the last decade" .... "The last Labour government did alot of work to increase teacher pay" ...."Very different economic climate" ... Just stop. The last Labour government set in motion the path to a ZIRP environment which is why the value of money has been trashed and why pay would never keep pace. I know the Conservatives continued this and global events played a role but New Labours deregulation, expenditure and kicking spending into the long grass with schemes like PFI, was a complete mess! it is utterly disingenuous to open the discussion trying to frame that period in a positive light.

Education is going to suffer when there is instability in the home. The government should encourage two parent homes and provide support to families so that e.g. you don't need to have two parents working. Then build up from there. What this minister is describing is just tinkering at the edges that is not going to work.

    • @henghistbluetooth7882

Why do we have to have a two parent home? That sounds more ideological than a real issue.

@@henghistbluetooth7882 It is one of the best predictors of academic success (albeit many would debate correlation vs. cause). I'd argue though, that in many cases there is only one parent for a good or unavoidable reason (e.g. parents who argue all the time can be even more detrimental) so we'd be better served addressing the reasons why that affects academic performance than trying solve everyone's marriage

Education can be fixed if the government appoints a competent minister. She is not competent but fits perfectly into Starmer's cabal of clowns

A ‘cabal of clowns’? As opposed to 14 years of the most corrupt, damaging and incompetent government in the history of the British isles or alternatively a guy who would have been happy working with Oswald Moseley. I’ll keep the clowns thanks.
