      Alan himself said it's never too late for learning about new stuff.
      Of course you won't learn through osmosis, but as enthusiast in auto mechanics and electricity, i have to say that Alan is very good at explaining stuff. If you don't get it at first, take a deep breath, a sip of lemon squash and rewind the video to the right point -- and try again. The most important thing in the learning process is taking your time. Every person has his/her own pace, and nobody should be ashamed of it.
      Cheers, mate!

    I know the brakes where never that good, but if you replace all the rubber bushings with new poly ones and put new springs and shocks on these it's amazing how well these things handled stock. And also what made a huge difference on my 76 torana was changing the two ball bearings in the steering column, which is often overlooked

  • @mysterymete

    @The Skid Factory Fusible links are just a piece of smaller gauge wire with a coating of more heat-resistant insulation (and often fiberglass impregnated to prevent the link burning in half). You can buy "fusible link wire" with the better insulation in spools or short pieces and build your own.
    Or, you can just use a smaller wire size and judge the need for additional insulation on your own. Standard sizing for a fusible link is 4 AWG sizes smaller than the wire being protected. So a 12 AWG circuit would be "fused" with a 16 AWG link.
    Fusible links really are beneficial. They can "soak up" normal amperage spikes without failing, such as when starting a car; whereas a fuse just pops.
    I've built about half a dozen fusible links, because I ran into the same issue as you - I couldn't get replacements - and all are still in service. Two of them replaced fuses that people had installed, because said fuses continued to 'pop', even when the fuse was massively over-sized for the circuit.

    • @theskidfactory
      @theskidfactory  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mystery Meat Good info mate. We can’t buy the wire here anymore afaik. Went through multiple suppliers.

    • @mysterymete
      @mysterymete 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd suggest one of my American suppliers. But after shipping, it would probably be cheaper to buy a scrap car for a fusible link.

    On the surface, the apparent love for the AU Falcon came from a place of irony - I'm not so sure that's the full story.
    Digging deeper, it's symbolic of traits that us Aussies value. We back the underdog, appreciate quiet achievers, blindly barrack for our local team, and find beauty in the ugly duckling.
    It's us car lovers giving the AU a "Fair Go" - because we didn't appreciate what we had and now it's gone.

Legend engines.. gearboxes.. meh... diffs.. meh.. mechanics kept them going... best I got from an AU as a Taxi passenger (I always ask the KM's when I climb in... it's a thing I have as I love how long cars go for when treated like shite...) 896,000km!!! Let that sink in.... thing ran.. ok.. gearbox shifted ok.. 7th overhaul no doubt... diff whined harder than fran drescher from the nanny... but it ran...they that drove it, owned that poor car...

    Ute & a manual 30'- every time!
    Longer wheel base hits that sweet spot (Ackerman Ratio?) for stepping them out of line on corner entry like a 2-stroke dirt-squirter...
    Feedback through HX/Z geometry & the 10to1 steering take a LOT of the understeering "float'n boat 'n' hope" out of the equation! :v ;)
    Now we've had a peak at this HJ, Im even more excited/curtous about what is to come with the engine project...

    Nice car, Kingswood use to be the name of a Chevrolet estate wagon in the early 70's, the front end on your car was used on the 1971-73 Chevrolet Caprice big boat cruisers and they all mostly had 350 cubic inch,5.7 litre V8's and 4 barrell carbs on them, and the tail lights look like a 70's Buick tail lights, Gm/Holden always used whatever they had in the parts bin right down to Cadillac power window and door lock switches in chevy and Buicks, Pontiac always got their own style, nice car and sounds sick, the Police cars here in Canada/US always had dual straight through exhaust and sounded so good as good as Camaros and Firebirds

      I love LS's but you'd be amazed at what you can find for SBC's these days on the cheap. I just grabbed a new Dart Iron Eagle block, Dart 11degree little chief heads and a few other parts to build a 450ci small block for $3750. He got it for a build years ago and now the car is finished he's going with a Texas Speed 427 LS3 instead of a carbed big SBC. He was asking a LOT more but nobody wanted it for MONTHS. I told him what I could afford and if he needed to sell it fast to call thinking he'd never go for it. But 3 months later he told me to come get it ASAP. The whole time we're loading it he's saying I hate to do it but I want fuel injection and it was like he didn't realize you can put EFI on anything. I just ordered new custom pistons and a cam for boost and started building a custom intake. But it should be in my S10 by the end of next month with my current turbo's pushing close to 2k hp. Granted it's not junkyard cheap but I've seen good SBC heads like AFR heads go for $250-300 and so on because of guys going LS. So there's deals to be had.
