Tom 1's tenure as host may have been rather brief (July 1999-September 2000), but he still lived through at least two pivotal moments in Toonami's history: the premieres of the Funi dub of DBZ in September 1999 and Gundam Wing in March 2000. These two shows ushered in that early 2000s era when Toonami ruled weekday afternoons for us kids.
Don't forget, they... resurrected him... as part of The Intruder II. A gruesome fate befell our friend; he died and he became the villain...
Oh, yeah! He was the TOM who debuted the final episodes of the Namek sagas.
1999 I was 18 2000 I was 20 I remember these days where everything was simple and toonami the good memories I have that time missed him it's not the same anymore. And right now it's 2022 and I'm 42
Pretty sure 99.9% of us was sad Tom1 bite the dust. But when Tom2 came outta the chamber we all had a sigh of relief when he upgraded to the new body. I even remember Toonami did the poll on what engine to go with…LIVE. Man the memories lol
I think we had to wait a week or something to see what happened to Tom. Damn, this is some undiluted nostalgia right here.
I remember watching these live and being creeped out by Tom 1 being destroyed by the Intruder. I was happy Tom wasn’t actually killed off but I will say for a while I liked Tom 1 over Tom 2. The animation for this era of Toonami is just pure, concentrated nostalgia though

still remember tom getting killed by intruder(especially his hand rising out in his last moments that i thought was his hand getting melted to the bone and the intruder being basically sentient lava.)being the biggest scare to me as a kid and thought it was so awesome seeing him come back/the music when the absolution is repaired.
Joe Boyd Vigil was a good composer for Toonami, Wish he was still around for today's era of the block, but artists gotta pursue future endeavors. And that TOM 1 death seems to be a genuine childhood trauma for some, You're certainly not the only one around that's shaken by it.

I remember calling that number and voted for the Talon ST's too. I went with that design, because it looked like the Absolution, and even if I didn't win anything, I was glad seeing the Absolution fixed with the engine I chose.

@@natedeanmaan2 I couldn't believe it either. After 19 years, Toonami is back where it belongs: Aboard the good old Absolution! I also loved seeing anime classics from back in the day on the monitors.

This is still my favorite Tom. It was horrifying to see him destroyed. First Tom will always be in our memories

God this is such a throw back i remember when i school was out and i got to spend days with my dad and when they announced this event i remember my dad woke me and my sister up early so we could get our chores done, make breakfast, and had cartoonnetwork pulled up so we were ready to go when the event started and we tried to make sure we were able to record each one sadly tho my copy of the tape got ruinined when my parents had a fight and my mom thought it was a good idea to take a random tape and throw it therefore smashing it when she was fighting with my dad-sighs- lost 4yrs of sailormoon episodes with that one but im so glad someone was able to find it and put it all otgether since i had missed some of it back then. Oh the memories RIP daddy you would have loved watching this with me

This was an iconic series for me. When TOM was killed, I was taken aback, like, 'Wait, the host of the show is actually dead? That's dark, but in a really awesome way. How are they gonna continue with their main character dead?' It got me obsessed with TOM and Sara's adventures behind all their anime broadcasts. I _had_ to write fanfiction for them (and after all these years, I still haven't given myself enough time to complete my adaptation of Endgame).
Omg I remember this I was heartbroken with what happened to Tom in the end. I was also surprised cause I never saw this side of tome and his ship no one had

I thought this was the end of Toonami when I first saw this. The destruction of T.O.M. 1 scared me. I stopped watching Toonami for a while thinking it was the end. I came back about 2 weeks later and saw TOM 2. I was like, why'd they have to get rid of my big man TOM 1 like that? lol
From what I've gathered, It was because Sonny did his work in Texas, whilst CN is in Atlanta and Burbank. They needed someone more local, and Steve Blum was just that guy.
...Was probably also cause the creators tend to get bored, which is why they made these, out of boredom and out of their desire to keep renewing the concept.
I watch a half of this but didn't seen enough like i was little, but now i can't finally watch this series now. Fun fact i got a funko pop of tom 1 for good memories and my collection's.

Totally forgot the vessel was called The Absolution. Cool.
Unusually, the characters in this special almost entirely spoke via noises. (only SARA and TOM 2 spoke in clear English) TOM 1 has high-pitched scat singing, known as “Toonamish,” Grado, who was created for the remake, has Sinatra-esque crooning, TARA (a character created exclusively for the remake) spoke in a voice resembling Cyndi Lauper, Clyde50-B has static-sounding radio chatter, RUBY, who originally appeared in Toonami Swarm, has a pop star voice that sounds a LOT like TOM 1, albeit much higher pitched, and EBBY (who, like TARA, was created exclusively for the remake) spoke in vocoded meowing that one can hear in some virtual pet games. SARA issued an intruder alert, and TOM 2, to add to being a rebirth, spoke in English.

Just watched the Forge and this is the first time I'm seeing this, at least in whole. These a very cute! Back in the day I missed big belly Tom but now I appreciate at the slightly less Y2K look. Perhaps if Toonami last another the years, I'll think the current Tom too angular because some new design trend. That old ship is WAY Y2K.

Is tom an explorer? Why is he out in space besides watching cartoons and movies?
The Absolution was originally a Broadcast ship from Ghost Planet Industries. It was designed to air Toonami across the galaxy. TOM was the ship's janitor/maintenance bot, but took it upon himself to host the block when Moltar retired. Moltar (and his voice actor) are long gone now, but TOM continues to broadcast as the head of Toonami.
Technically true, But TOM didn't exactly start off as part of the Ghost Planet Industries. He was saved by the absolution after an swarm of an alien species attacked his boot camp, If you ever read up on Toonami Swarm, which explains his origins.

Wouldn't be too harsh, Toonami is struggling due to Sony's stronghold over the anime market, They're scraping for what they can get their hands on. Wouldn't be surprised if one day Toonami has the plug pulled again.
