I've always loved this song simply because of the beauty and the depth of emotion in George's voice, but I misunderstood it until I lived it, and the meaning became crystal clear. I felt it in my heart and soul. The reunion of two lovers where one foolishly let true love almost slip away...to then return with the promise of forever and lessons that have been learned. And the most beautiful part of all...her forgiveness and willingness to trust and try again. This song is a masterpiece...truly beautiful songwriting, and no one could possibly sing it the way that George Strait does.
@vadennotbaden I’ve wondered the same thing, but the way I hear it now is that they were together until George “acted like a fool.” Now he’s coming back to her as a changed man, which is why she says “I don’t recall seeing you around here.” And when George is reflecting on his past mistakes saying “what I'd give to be back in her arms” she replied “the invitations open.” That’s my thought on it, anyway. Thanks for commenting, it reminded me to listen to this song!
It's clear that it's a conversation between exes where the man is trying to make a fresh start and fix past wrongs and the woman is letting him know that she's opened to it. In any case, it's a beautiful song.
I have been singing this song for the past hour and needed to hear it, so glad it was available, thanks for posting!! This is another 1 of George Strait's great songs!
I tend to think that George is coming back after straightening out whatever problems he was facing when he “acted like a fool.” Now that he’s not the same guy he was, the woman wants to give him a chance but is uncertain. She says “I don’t recall seeing you around here” so they can meet anew. Once she's sure he's changed she says "the invitations open" to "be back in her arms." But that’s part of the beauty of this song, it tells different stories to different people.
She said I don't recall seeing you around here. You must be new to this town. Said I'm just passin' through but girl from the looks of you I could see me settlin' down Then she smiled and said the invitations open. Cause you look just like what I've been waitin' on. So I said why don't we take this matter somewhere else and get to know this feeling that's so strong Lead on She said I had a love once but he just up and left me I said I bet it broke your heart I had a love once to but I acted like a fool oh what I'd give to be back in her arms Then she smile and said the invitations open cause you look just like what I've been waitin' on So I said why don't we take this matter somewhere else and pick up right where everything went wrong Lead on She said I don't recall seeing you around here you must be new to this town
I've always wondered about the irony in this song. At first I thought they were strangers but now I wonder if they used to have a relationship. A lot of good ol' George's songs are like that...
She said, ''I don't recall, seeing you around here, You must be new to this town.'' Said, ''I'm just passin through but, Girl from the looks of you I could see me settling down.'' Then she smiled and said, ''The invitation's open, 'Cause you look just like what I've been waiting on.'' So I said, Why don't we take this matter somewhere else And get to know this feelin' that's so strong, lead on.'' ------ She said, ''I had a love once, but he just up and left me.'' I said, ''I bet it broke your heart. I had a love once too ,but I acted like a fool, Oh, what I'd give to be back in her arms.'' Then she smiled and said, ''The invitation's open, 'Cause you look just like what I've been waiting on.'' So I said, ''Why dont we take this matter somewhere else, And pick right up where everything went wrong, lead on.'' She said, ''I dont recall seeing you around here, You must be new to this town.''...

"why don't we take this matter somewhere else, and pick up right where everything went wrong" sounds like george is singing about a old flame, not just a random girl
@WinstonFreedman Plus you think of many of the great country music artists like George Jones, Merle Haggard, etc., they all had chaotic personal lives. Not so with George, and that's another thing I've always liked about him.
The song is a ballad which at first seems to indicate the beginnings of a love affair. As the song continues into the second verse however, it is revealed that the man and the woman had already in fact been lovers and his appearance in this new town is his admission to being a fool and an offer to settle down .... :-)
Its a conversation between 2 strangers,, "She said I dont recall seeing you around here, you must be new to this town" though I guess its possible its between 2 exes.
Robbie Stewart I just looked it up online, and the answer is yes. This lovely song was co-written by Dean Dillon and Teddy Gentry. I will soon verify that on the CD packaging itself. I do not know if one wrote the words and the other wrote the music, but they are both credited.. I love this selection.. :-]
Lead On makes me remember a love I lost in 95. We were so great. I never fell in love again. I was 30 yrs old at the time.
This and the "The Cowboy rides away" are my favourite George Strait songs. Pure country@western bliss!
I saw This album tour in Indianapolis. Faith Hill opened for him! Memories still as fresh as wet paint!

One of my favorites by George Strait. New beginnings, new possibilities. Such emotion in the vocals. Just love it.

Just the best.
She said, "I don't recall, seeing you around here
You must be new to this town"
Said, "I'm just passin' through but
Girl, from the looks of you, I could see me settling down"
Then she smiled and said, "The invitation's open

Winston, this selection did not reach number one. It peaked at number seven for one week..the week ending Saturday, September 2, 1995..
Probably a rodeo man who has finally come to his senses.
Is This Sonng Is Written By Teddy Gentry From The Supergroup Alabama
