This game means everything to me, and this haunting melody makes my spine crawl no matter how long it's been since I've played the game or heard it.

i think the reason we all miss this game and niko is because of how it was written. we don't play as niko. we play alongside niko. in every other game, we watch a story; the character we play as bonds with others, and when the story ends, we're either satisfied or dissatisfied with it, and it ends there. but in oneshot, you're part of the story. YOU bond with niko and the characters. YOU are the one that decides to return and save both. we miss niko because niko misses us.

I feel so weird about this,
This is the first time I've missed a character from something like this..
    I miss talking to Niko..
I miss helping Niko figure out things..
Or hearing Niko talk about the pancakes Mama'd make..

I think the reason why we all end up missing Niko so much is not just the amazing story has to tell, but also how it makes sure to cement Niko as their own character. Other games are all about getting you immersed as a character, but OneShot went out of its way to ensure that Niko had a voice of their own, and focused on building a bond.

it shall not die then ;). and yea this game has the impact of a meteorite colliding with earth at unhuman speeds. i think that this game is so unforgettable because it creates a special connection with the player, this is not just some fourth wall breaking, like in undertale and many other games. This game includes the player character itself in the game, you controll Niko, but not like in other games, Niko isn't you, in other similar games like Omori, you cannot truly feel like you are the part of the game, bc ppl call you Omori / sunny, but in Oneshot- you are you, people call you by the name that you go by, and there is no player model for you, in that way Oneshot is special, and that specialness makes this game the absolute gold that it is
P.S: if you would like to correct me / say your own interpretation, feel free to do that, i will appreciate feedback

    Fun fact:
In the freeware version, if you were to 'kill' Niko by closing the game out, the menu soundtrack would be replaced with 'My Burden Is Dead,' instead of the usual 'My Burden Is Light.'
It makes sense, but is also so unsettling and creepy. Even just seeing Niko's scarf wrapped around a broken sun without Niko anywhere to be seen is already unsettling, and the soundtrack just adds onto it.
Edit: On the topic of this, the message that you get when you try to exit the game after selecting Start is basically the cherry on top for how creepy this is.

This song, it's ambience, it's complex simplicity, it's soft rough melody. It makes you get the feels, especially after playing the game, it feels like your heart gets heavy, like it almost puts you back into the game, under the burden of the sun, the fate of a dying world, the duty of a child who never asked for anything more than a home. Absolutely brilliant, I love this song, there isn't another like it.

I love this game so much. I was late to the party, played it after the Solstice ending was added, but it has a special place in my heart.
If there is one moment that I remember the most, it's when you meet the robot in the alley that's surrounded by all the cats.
When they tell you you can sit with them and feel the warmth they have to offer for a while, that feeling of comfort is what I remember the whole of the game made me fell. It's the same feeling of coming home after a long, tiring journey. Joyful, but also heavy and melancholic.
I suppose that's how Niko feels returning home instead of returning the sun.

To me, Oneshot is one of the few games that fully embraces the nature of how the cycle of rebirth and continuation can effect media (As the media we consume can always be re-consumed). This is firstly acknowledged by quote of "Ad (In)Finitum (Forevermore)" as stated by the first books we and Niko bear witness to. This continues on every playthrough before ending it through Solstice. Niko is (in a way) reborn after every non-Solstice run, forever left to finish a book with no true ending.
    Wake up,
    Get Sun,
    Barrens,
    Glen,
    Refuge,
    Entity,
    Tower,
    End,
    Repeat,
Post-Solstice continues on with this, just with Niko out of the equation. And thus perpetuates this cycle, only with the World Machine. Thus demonstrating that this game is fully willing towards admitting its own cycle of rebirth and continuation.
    Ad Finitum,
    Forevermore,
    Perpetuation,
    Rebirth,
    Continuation,
Untill we stop playing the game.

Even though i finished the game just yesterday, it somehow feels nostalgic, like if i'd know it for years. Quite frankly, this piece is one of the most engaging and soul-tearing soundtracks i've ever heard. Knowing that the world is beyond repair, knowing that its residents gave up all hopes: "It wont help. Its too late".
Even after that, despite all the despair and bleak, utter darkness, we reach the summit.
    To a choice.
To save yourself or To save the world.
    But is it worth it?
Is there a hope it will live long and prosperous afterwards?
My words are few to describe how deeply touching this masterpiece is.
This game is one of a kind.
    Its beautiful.
All the great to the creators of this mind-boggling,
    unsettling game.
Its a game about tragedy, that makes us, the player, feel most indefinite about the destiny of a dying world.
I hope that it will get all attention it deserved with the release on modern consoles.
This time, it sure will, make a difference.

I didn't even understand what was what and therefore decided to play it. After walkthrough I sat with tears in my eyes before this choice for about 10 minutes somewhere... for me it was painful and you should have seen my face, how it lit up when I saw that there was an add-on along with the original. although, the true ending broke me more, although this time I didn't cry over Niko's departure...for me personally this music allows me to relax before the most difficult choices in my damn life

*SPOILERS FOR ONESHOT'S ENDING BELOW. IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED ONESHOT, TURN AROUND NOW AND DON'T READ THIS COMMENT.*
_Nico, what's the right thing to do...?_
I remember I just... stared at the screen, watching as Niko asked me that burning question. A question that I never can forget, years later.
Years after I finish OneShot, that one question just... breaks me.
That question makes me tear up and I just... remember what I did.
I had *One shot* to get them home. I had one opportunity, one chance.
And I didn't want to waste it. I couldn't abandon them. Not when we came so far. Not when *I* guided them to that point. I couldn't.
And so I chose the only option that made sense to me. The only option that would allow me to sleep easier.
    *Return Home.*
Was I being selfish? Maybe. But I didn't care. I couldn't care. When I remember what the World Machine told me, and how it wanted me to save Niko, I complied.
I refused to let Niko be trapped. I refuse to let Niko be doomed when the sun would eventually die again. And Niko wouldn't be there to stop it.

Personally, I chose to return the sun because I felt like the world was giving up on itself too easily. Why was it so convinced that there was no hope at all? And what about sweet Alula and her older brother Calamus? I couldn't just let them die after they had placed so much trust and hope in me. As much as I wanted Niko to go home, I couldn't let the World Machine's self-destructive attitude drag the innocent people it housed down in doing so.

@@LumosTerris I played the game for the first time a couple of months ago, and dang. It's an experience I'll never forget. I chose to return Niko home, mostly because as the world machine said, the world was fake (boy how funny that is to say now.) I didn't really think enough about it at the time, mostly because of how hard of a decision it was, so I just tunnel visioned on the world being "fake" and Niko being "real". I quickly made the decision and told Niko to leave. However I then learned about the solstice route (well it had kinda been spoiled for me but not that much, I just knew it existed). And I did not realize how powerful it would be.
I've played some games that tried to make me feel bad about what I was doing, mainly undertale's genocide route, and while I felt bad for the characters in undertale a bit, I was having too much fun with the sans fight lol (also I spoiled undertale for myself f. I still enjoyed it, and it's one of my favorite games to this day.) However I've never felt like such a terrible person for doing something in a video game as I did during the solstice route. If I had chosen to return the sun I would have no hesitation, but the fact that I was dragging Niko back to the world made it SO MUCH WORSE. And when Niko got upset at me I genuinly felt I had made a bad decision bringing them back to the world, trying to save it now felt even more selfish than the decision to save Niko. And while the game tells you that Niko didn't actually return, and that it was a dream (at least that's what I remember) I still think Niko actually did return, only to be dragged back... And it genuinly felt relieving having Niko forgive me at the library. What an incredible game.

I played through this game recently, and no game has hit me in the heart as hard as this game. I have yet to play the other major story-puzzle games like Undertale or Omori, but after playing through this game and through the Solstice ending, I don't think anything can top it. This game is a masterpiece that does an amazing job at connecting you with the characters. Not by putting you in the world, but by solidifying your importance as an outside figure, and as a guide for Niko. At the point of the game where you say goodbye to Niko for the final time, I just cried. It was so emotional, and if I played through the game again, it all just wouldn't be the same. Knowing that I'll never be able to really be there with Niko again, it's such a sad and bittersweet feeling. Even though he's back in his own world, I can't help but wish I could talk to him again. I've never felt this connected to a game before. It is such a good game. I think I'm obsessed with it now.
    Goodbye, Niko.

OneShot has forever cemented itself as my favorite game of all time for many reasons, the characters are built amazingly making you love every single one you find and the game introduces them so well you become attached to them and don't want to see them go, the story telling is also just phenomenal with every moment being detrimental to you making you feel devastated when Niko is sad or upset, it makes you feel like you're just out of Niko's Reach, having to watch Niko go through it but you can't help them, and finally the true ending is just the top of the top it's such a wonderful conclusion to such a good game and tied up every loose end and ends the game in a nice way which makes you cry your eyes out, I won't go into spoiler territory since this game must be experienced for a first time without spoilers or any knowledge of the game. This game has honestly changed my life in a way that I'm even more empathetic than I already was and I'm gonna savor every moment of my life because just like helping Niko, You only have OneShot. This theme especially helps compliment it, any theme from the game is wonderful and amazing in every way, this video is wonderful, thank you for making it.

well good reason why it calls oneshot though. pay attention for what you see, as it will be the last ever time you remember it, along with getting the true feelings from what you see then you will be left with very nice memories or sometimes bad ones
TLDR: dont forget the good things you see, maybe sometimes you want to but just keep it at a "low level"

  • @UncleOleg_Z

When I finished the game after the true ending, I cried. I literally cried for the first time in 8 years. Now I understand why. The character of Niko is made in the way that he not only interacts with the game world but with the player as well. Through the game it builds a friendship with the player. Niko and the player have something in common, they're both from different worlds and particularly in the same situation. This connects them even stronger. Eventually the player starts to see a friend in Niko. They talk to each other, tell about their life, ect. That little scene at the cafe in the city where Niko tells about how much he misses home and his mother really hits deep in heart. After saving the world and before going home through the portal, Niko says goodbye as well as the player. They both understand that they'll never see each other again and the only thing left is to remember and never forget.
The friendship between the two is ended at the top before it started to degrade. That is why the game is so beautiful.
Farewell, Niko. I shall never forget you.

I kind of regret playing the game the way I did. I watched a youtube about 4 years ago play this game and they decided to save the world. Afterwards I thought Niko died and was extremely mad at their decision. Recently I played the game again and felt the same way. I went in on a heavy bias towards saving Niko, and I didn’t get to experience as much a hard decision as most people faced. Rewatched that youtubers playthrough and fell in love with the characters all over again. Still think I would save Niko, but it would’ve been much harder for me to do it

    • @LumosTerris
      @LumosTerris  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Personally, I chose to save the world, but I didn't do it just because of the characters themselves. I felt like destroying the lightbulb meant giving up hope for the World Machine and everyone in it. Even though there was no promise of the world ultimately being saved, I couldn't just abandon it.

When I was playing through, I really listened to people and how they said that the sun wouldn’t save them and there’s one guy who talks about how he thinks a quick death would be better. Not to mention, the world machine WILL destroy everything if Niko isn’t in the world, so it was always doomed. I decided that Niko was the priority. He didn’t deserve the burden of that choice

    • @ezergilechimekazikura6855
      @ezergilechimekazikura6855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Question of saving many at the expense of the few or other way around is great for that exact reason of being a tough one. I will say that it is a great feat for you to recognise the bias you had, and you should not regret having it, as long as it allowed you to learn something about yourself. Although I would admit, that such bias can lead up to clouded judgement of the individual. I actually saved Niko first time going in, but my bias was rooted on predication that I am not the one to doom a child as a sacrificial lamb for tge greater good of 'the many'.
Funnily enough, few years before this, when I played undertale for the first time, compassion towards the few, who were turned into amalgamations, coupled with the fact that monsters, as implied, killed children not only out of desperation for having no other way out, but out of resentment and lust for revenge, led me to disgust towards them so hard, that I reset the save file right before finishing up with the true lab, and for the next two days I went on a genocide route.
What it taught me, is that lots of compassion left unchecked is not necesserily good, because that might lead to disgust, resentment and revenge, bringing forth the worst qualities of the individual. When I played oneshot, I recognised it happening in me again, but this time around I had humility in myself to recognise, that not everyone could be stoic in the face of demise unavoidable, and so I should not be hasty in judging those who are desperate. That said, decision to save Niko seemed right, since in my eyes humility in the face of mortality is the way, and perpetuation of a world's agony through suffering of an individual is wrong. While the decision I made was similar, the reasoning is what mattered. In Undertale I lashed out associating myself with 'the few', but in OneShot I saved the one who I was not associating myself with, because if I would live in that world, I would much preffer acceptance of the inevitable rather than agony of the innocent.

Since everything that has transpired begun.
I still remember. As I promised to Niko, and to everyone else.
It hurts and burns to look back, just as it would hurt and burn to wield the sun of the world itself.
Nonetheless, I cherish that feeling, as though with searing heat comes scorching pain that never quels completely, so does warmth and light, that are progenitors of life and hope.
So take heart, as when things are grim and miserable in our own world for many reasons that come in no shortage, you must not falter and never give in to despair. As you did not let someone else to.
Light is also our burden, and after all it's up to us to make sure that it won't be extinguished.

I’ve never played OneShot but i came across this song while playing Minecraft when it was late at night and I had came across an ancient city and the energy this song gave off perfectly matched the ancient city aesthetic. Every time I hop on Minecraft or when I just want to think about stuff I put this song on loop just to get in the moment.

I don't think any game has made me more emotional than this one has. That first time on the computer sent chills down my spine and gave me this awful feeling of existential dread the rest of the playthrough, as if I was gonna miss something important, screw it all up, and reach the end without having fulfilled some key objective...and then the decision came and this music freaked me the hell out. It makes me want to cry listening to it. Soon I'm gonna have a thousand doodles of Niko in my notebooks, lmao. (Spoiler below)
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
I ended up deciding to throw it all and save Niko, since if I were in his shoes I'd argue saving a world you didn't even know about a day ago wasn't worth the cost of your life. But man, did I feel awful about that. This reminds of when I played Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors for the first time-every choice felt like a mistake and it all stacked up to crush you. OneShot is downright terrifying how it plays it with your feelings.
    .
On another note, did you hear about the mod Eternabyte is making? It's a fan-made sequel called OneShot: Aftermath, and it looks like they're shooting to have it out by the end of this year. I'm pumped for its release.

    • @LumosTerris

Ooh!! I have heard of it before and probably looked it up a couple times, but I don't know a whole ton about it. However, if you're interested in mods, Oneshot: Fading Memory is pretty sick!! It's not quite finished yet, but it should be good :DD (also they're using this looped version of the song :O )

I recently finished playing this game.
But it feels more like i had actually said goodbye to a dear friend, that friend being Niko. And not in the pathetic parasocial sense like "in the real world i may have no friends, but at least here i have Niko", not at all. But because, fot how this game is made, i legit cared for Niko as much as i care normally for my, you could say, real friends, like Niko was actually a real person and not just a character of a videgame... Or maybe it would be more correct to say that It made me feel like I was part of the game, like Niko does, instead of just being the one playing It.
There were moments were i was genually screaming and in general talking to the characters in game, like they were able to hear me or something. This game legit feels more real than modern AAA with current gen graphics i swear.

    Somewhere in our hearts......
    ......
Feel a missing part. And we know well... It's a friend. That has cat ears and eyes. Doesn't admit it's a cat. That has good and cheerful behaviours and personality...
    We're the one.
    Who sended Niko to eternity.
    With our hands.
Niko said Niko won't forget us.
    As like we do.
And that moment. Niko broke the wall which Niko has been stuck in a while, and went into home......
We know well Niko can't come back with it's own. We have to wait for devs to bring Niko back. But we know.. this is impossible.
All we can do is wait Niko with or without hope.
*We should be one to thank you, Niko. Thank you for bringing us to your journey. Thank you for this valuable memory. Thank you for remembering us. Thank you for million times.* _Thank you for everything._

I am that person and as someone who's sad and depressed consistently my light was hard to find and it's there but it's a battle to keep shining like your the last light in a hopeless world

    • @LumosTerris
      @LumosTerris  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks man!! I'd love to give you a quick rundown :D I'm no audio expert but I think I can explain it correctly haha.
(jsyk this turned out LONG, so you're getting what you asked for and more 💀)
Basically all digital audio recording and playback use what are called samples. In the recording process, each audio sample takes a _really_ small amount of audio (like, about a 44,000th of a second) and then writes down how loud it is. Then, when you squish a LOT of those samples together, you start to see a pattern called a waveform, and that's how we get sound (I promise this is relevant lol)
The cool thing is that you can edit this kind of file with what's called a digital audio workstation, or DAW for short. For this one I used Audacity (which is free!).
Now for this song! (Sorry it took so long to get to this point 💀) The only reason I was able to fix the loop at all is because the music actually does loop correctly before the pop happens. I actually didn't create any new audio on my own; I basically did advanced copy and paste 😅 Essentially, I had to "zoom in" to the part of the music just before the pop so that I could see what the pattern of samples looked like. Then, I went to the part of the music that looped correctly and looked for the pattern of samples that matched what I found before the pop (which was WAY harder than it sounds lol).
The last step was cutting a bit of the looped part, pasting it on top of the popping part and doing a fade-in and fade-out. I thought that I could just copy and paste, but it turns out that it actually won't work; even if you get everything lined up perfectly, there's still a liiiiiittle bit of offset. I'm struggling to explain this well, but imagine it like this: if you took two pictures a tenth of a second apart from each other on the same camera, you'd get _almost_ the exact same picture, but with a few really small differences. The thing with audio is that it's WAY easier to hear what those differences are and when they happen... and they sound like pops 💀 To fix that, I basically had to take a lot of the lead-up time and lead-out time of the loop, slap it on top, and fade it in and out so that the difference is spread out over a few seconds, making it almost unnoticeable.
ANYWAY, this comment was absolutely overkill, but yeah! This is basically how I fixed the loop. I really appreciate your interest!! It took me SO long to figure out how to fix it and no one else has been interested in how I did, so it literally made my whole day to get your comment lol
      HAVE A GREAT DAY :DDDD
