  • A beautiful Red Tailed Hawk disembowels and eats a mouse on my back porch railing. I recorded this with my iPhone camera through the double pane glass of my deck door, so there are some reflections and the clarity is not great, but not too bad either. I didn't dare open the door because the bird would have surely seen/heard and flown away. The gut pile is to the right of the hawk on the railing. After he flew away I looked at the guts and it was the entire digestive tract of the mouse - stomach, small intestine, large intestine. A theory as to why they don't eat the guts can be found here:

Very amazing footage there! I read the blog as to why this Red Tailed Hawk discards the digestive tract. I can pretty much conclude its a texture factor. The more "hard" it feels, the more bacteria it has. A hawk wouldn't be able to tell the difference based on taste. However, if the hawk had a choice, it would rather just eat the mouse in one bite with the small intestine and everything. I've seen videos of hawks in New York City and other urban areas eating a whole mouse in one bite if its small enough.
