From what I understand, at least in the past, is that this ferry is basically a booze cruise for people from Helsinki. Because alcohol is very heavily taxed in Finland, its much, much cheaper in Estonia. So its like this amazing experience of getting really drunk for cheap while buying cheap booze to get drunk again later.
As a Finn I can confirm that. In the past bringing cheap alcohol from Estonia to Finland was a thing, but not that much anymore because the prices aren't that different anymore. Of course those ferries contain a lot of cargo too. There are always a lot of trucks on board. And the truck drivers have their private deck where regular tourists have no access.
@@artoeloranta2810 Yeah maybe now, im talking about 15 years ago when I last went to Helsinki. Im from The Netherlands and its not a cheap country too, but I was kind of shocked how expensive beer was in the city back then. Its the same now here with sigarettes. Taxes went up by alot here but not in Germany so now you have "bus tours" from here to Germany that are basically just buying the maximum allowed quantity of tobacco. I buy it in Germnay too and its totally worth it. The same 30 grams Pueblo tabac I buy in Germany for 5,99 but over here I pay 15,20. So yeah, I just buy 20 every 2 months or so and make it a nice daytrip to somewhere in Germany. I can totally imagine the situation used to be the same in Finland and Estonia.
A lot of estonians work in Helsinki. And many of them go to Estonia for the weekend so if you were onboard on a friday it is possible that some of the sleepy people were them, just waiting to get home and not on a joyride cruise.
Well, they had it on the ferries between Finland and Sweden long before Estonia broke away from the USSR and it seems the ones running ferries between Finland and Estonia (and Estonia and Sweden) thought they should have the same standard.
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld M/S Gabriella was launched in 1991 so its pretty old at this point. Newer ships/ferrys that do Helsinki-Stockholm or Turku-Stockholm routes are way bigger and have MUCH more activities.
I visit Tallinn a couple of times a year. My favorite places to go: Telliskivi area, for example F-hoone, Fotografiska, many nice cafés, Balti Jaam marketplace and the Surf café, Hell Hunt for Hele beer, Vegan restaurant V, Røst in Rottermanni area for cinnamon buns and of course the small streets in the old town. Just enjoy your stay!
I really liked this little video/vlog. Thank you for taking us with you on this ferry. Looks like you had a good time. Decent food, a nice room and won some money on the slot machine! I guess when you arrived in Tallinn you first had a 12 hour sleep? Extra thanks to Nate who despite his eye infection worked around the clock to get these videos done. Oh, was that cola in these wine glasses, has Nate started to like wine or was Katrina extra thirsty? One day you will lose your phone. Keep it up!
'Drilling platform' is one name for those ferry cruises 😅 Try Helsinki-Stockholm-Helsinki (or vise versa) 2-night cruise at weekend...it's a party! 😂 -Finn
The overnight ship is a specific way of going between Finland and Estonia. Because the actual trip takes 2-3 hours. So they just run around the Gulf of Finland for several hours just to make you able to party at the ship (which is the idea of overnight boat). If you just want to cross, take specific ship that just goes directly over.
Buffet is way more cheaper than in a ferries that goes from Finland to Sweden. Little over year ago i travelled to my aunts funeral in to Sweden and the buffet costed 55€ or 58€. It was also Viking Line vessel. But of course, people in Estonia have lower income so the prices have to match in that.
They sell certain sailing as “overnight” and let you rent a room that you can stay in until the morning. We were sailing for about 2.5 hours or so, and then we slept in port on the boat u til morning when they get ready to sail back to Finland.
O K. Tallin Is actually a very beautiful and historic country. Many of these buildings are from the time when Tallin was ruled by the Sweds. The most ugliest and disgusting architecture will be from the Soviet era. It was a misery for our Estonian brothers and sisters. Finns and Estonian have actually the same melody on their national anthem, and we Finns and Estonians are brothers in blood.... But we Finns are really the big brothers to the Estonians. Finland actually sent soldiers to help Estonia to become independent from the Russian rule in 1920. Finland had just recently become independent from Russia, during the Finnish civil war, where Finland defeated the Finnish and Russian Bolshevik bastards in 1918. Slava Ukraine from Finland 💪🇺🇦🇪🇪💪🇫🇮🙏
I don’t think people realise how cheap these ferries can be. I live in Helsinki so would rather take an early morning ferry but these overnight ones are a good and affordable choice for tourists who would have to pay for a room in Helsinki or Tallinn + the ferry anyways.
Such bullshit. The ferry over H to T takes some two hours. Practically from centrum to centrum. The ports are just smack dab in the middle. You are actually been hijacked on that boozing ferry without escape. A moving mall. Enjoy!

Gives idea how busy and workaholic people are in Finland. Will get so tired.
I'm amazed that the ferry has all that on it! That's amazing 😮

It was cola. 👍
It's weird if someone sleeps on the floor of the ship but totally normal if you do it at the airport?
Fair point!
this was nice and also interesting at the same time.
Much appreciated!!

Save 1. Hotell night

Is that the "e" version of Stonia? Because what about the trees? They seemed totally "e" to me? And how tall was that inn, actually?

As the price of freedom, Finland gave up Karelia, that's why Finland escaped the Russian occupation and wasn't the part of the Soviet ..
