Great vid. Would all three filters require replacement at the same time? Does filter 1 do the majority of the heavy lifting? Replacement price would be interesting.

Hi Greg. On this occasion we replaced all three; they were all time expired as per manufacturer’s specs. I guess it would have been possible to remove one filter at a time to observe effects on water flow, i.e., is one filter largely responsible for the reduced flow?
The best prices I’ve found show the 25 and 10 micron filters for less than €10 each, while the 0.3 micron carbon block filter can be had for €30. It’s sure to cost a little more at convenient, dockside chandleries. That’s reasonable for good tasting water for up to a year.
The first filter was the only one that had a visible change. It started off white, the other two black.
With this triple filter changeover, the new middle filter is 10 micron and carbon block. The old middle filter was 5 micron and carbon block. We’d only be guessing as to how this change will play out. I used to work with a team of scientists who could nail down which filter was losing its capacity at what rate. That’s expensive research to do and only worthwhile if something is failing, or if an expensive consumable is not providing satisfactory performance for long enough. It’s cheaper to just replace them all. 🤪 But next time I might replace them in the order three, two, one, with flow tests in between; might be revealing.

@@SailingSnowGum Hi Rick, thanks for the detailed reply. That filter pricing is not actually extortionate! Are you sure you got the marine version :)

@@gregmorgan8900 Ah ha! I think you’ve worked it out. The prices for these filters must be kept in check by their use in other markets, like motor homes, trucks and even houses. The best prices I found were from a supplier in Slovakia. I need to check on whether there’s any tax added when they’re delivered into France.

I'm interested to know if Garcia included a maintenance manual with the yacht and if you consider it sufficiently detailed. Also, when do you sail to the Caribbean? Thanks.

An Owner’s Manual is provided. It provides very useful information about operation and maintenance of systems. We also received paper and digital versions of instructions for most of the equipment installed on the boat. Manufacturer’s websites usually have good information. One exception is the Scheiber electronic management system. The system is good but the limited, downloadable instructions for it are comical. Actually, that’s an insult to the comic industry, given that one does not need Mensa level Extra Sensory Perception to be able to understand their offerings! Ha!

Any reason to filter all water and not just drinking water?

    • @SailingSnowGum

Hi Paulo. You’re making me wonder if the pop-up edit notes I included are showing in the video?? It really is just the ‘drinking water’ that is filtered, though, it’s piped to the galley, front and aft heads for basins and showers, as well as to the transom/cockpit shower. Two supplies of fresh water do not go through the filters, being the galley foot pump outlet (for redundancy) and the two, toilet flushing connections.
While it would be possible to route the plumbing so that filtered water only goes to the galley, this would require positioning the filters after the pressure pump instead of before it. Filters work best if fluid is pulled through them rather than being pushed through under pressure. Besides, the filters lasted for a year, dealing with all of our potable water needs. Do you have teenage daughters? If they and their friends are coming on the boat, ya better get some spare filters! 😆

What is the brand and model of the filter system? I was planning a slow flow rate filter for just a single water spigot but your system does far more than that. Really enjoying your videos and learning about your boat!

    • @SailingSnowGum

Hi Dale. The brand is Atlas Filtri, from Italy I believe. I couldn’t find any model information on it, but look for the one-piece, three canister model. Carolyn says that we’ve seen them on the SVB.de website, but they’re widely available. The first set we used were 25, 5 and 0.3 micron. The new ones I’ve installed are 25, 10 and 0.3 micron. In both cases the second two filters are carbon block versions. The difference in the taste of the water, using the filters and not using the filters, is very noticeable! We’ll be stocking up on plenty of spare filter cartridges. Regards, Rick.

@@SailingSnowGum Many thanks Rick! We are having a boat built and will see if we can replicate your solution. I suppose with the filter between the water tank and the pump/accumulator tank, all pressurized water is essentially filtered? I was a bit worried about the flow rate with almost all water filtered but it looks like it has worked well for you!

    • @SailingSnowGum
      @SailingSnowGum  3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DaleNewnham Hi Dale. Yeah, good idea for your next scheduled talk with your contact at Garcia. The filters might be installed under the galley, if you don’t have a third fuel tank or large grey/black water tank using up that space. As for pressure, we’ve found it to be fine at the galley and heads faucets and most importantly, the aft heads shower! It’s a bit softer at the transom shower; perhaps due to the length of the hose run? Very handy though.
AFAIK, the triple filter and transom shower are standard inclusions. Subject to change of course.
We’ve been experimenting with adjusting the preload pressure of the accumulator tank, to see if we can influence the regularity of the pressure pump coming on. Not ready to publish yet!
Do you mind if I ask, what stage is your build at? PM if you prefer.

Yikes! That makes me think that you must value these filters for what they do for you, to a town water supply that is not the best? In the cities we grew up in and lived in later in Australia, the idea of needing or using filters in the home to clean or fix the taste of water is completely foreign. We found the water in the marinas we visited in Snow Gum to be good, too. Clean water is something that is so often taken for granted, when really it is a hugely valuable resource. Wars have been fought over it. Hopefully your filters help keep the peace at home. 🙂

@@SailingSnowGum I have a well. But I use a ton more water than you. My water tastes fantastic and makes the best coffee.
