Not a bad spoon. It reminds me of a spoon for a water pail that someone would have before orange coolers were on every work pickup. It was certainly more interesting than another ice pick. One thing I noticed was at 2:29 if it were a little bit larger you'd have a nice goblet. Maybe this could be the start for a matching wooden place setting?
I really like the overall design. The construction method of making two different pieces and gluing them together, Im not sure about that. I could be wrong but my gut tells me the grain orientation of the handle to the bowl needs to be considered. If one was to actually use it and the handle swelled because of moisture, I see the side of the bowl possibly cracking if the if the grain was parallel to the length.
Nice project, Jimmy. Neat idea holding the vacuum along your chisel when doing some of the rough turning. Never seen that before (I'm not a turner, though, so I'm no expert!)
Beautiful ladle, nice work and looks like it will have great function. Just a thought from experience; vegetable oil can/and does go rancid. Butcher block oil is a choice.
jimmydiresta That always kind of confused my why you'd use the push lever on the table saw but free hand on the band saw. although, I guess there really isn't another way to do that...
I am amazed by your works! a huge fan!...but a) that's what we call a ladle and b) yah, use mineral oil...then linseed, then even baby oil before vegi oil.
For my woodworks, I use either the following finish: Scrub/clean away the dirt and debris, sand, and apply a water-based polyurethane. Scrub/clean away the dirt and debris, sand, stain, and apply a water-based polyurethane. Sand away the old varnishes, dust off, and apply Flood's CWF Wood Oil. After whittling away the rough edges on freeform wood pieces to make crosses, I either use oil-based gloss polyurethane, water-based polyurethane, or Flood's CWF Wood Oil. :)
I have some questions in the range of lathes, i would like to get a lathe to do metal and woodwork, is it fine to get a metalworkinglathe to handle wood aswell? And if yes can you tell me wich lathe is a good one ?
Bubinga is naturally resistant to rot and contains a high amount of natural oils, the vegetable oil would be more of a surface treatment after working to clean it up rather than a conditioner.
love the spoon, awesome and entertaining work as always, quick question i noticed, the brass plate around your bandsaw blade, did you make that, love brass and i picked up on it right away that it looked like a addition
What did you coat it with at the end there? Also I remember when I took woodworking in high school you have to coat it with food safe varnish or something, any good brands you could suggest?
I have a stupid question - can you actually use it? For hot stuff, for example - it will endure the hot and moist food? I'm not a woodworker, I'm just curious. And nice job nevertheless.
Karl Liljeström oh , thanx !! i couldent get eny description even if i pressed on it or went back and forth to the link so i assumed it wasnt in! once again thanx!
but but didnt he use it to clean up the oil "excess" ? so he has to be carefull where he is going ? Ö,.ö i mean he made it dirty on purpose... isnt that like burning it ? xD jks
Cancun771 For something being turned, precision isn't a must have as the lathe will take care of that. By the time the blade was changed and everything lined back up, you can have the cut done and being turning the piece.
Looked like vegetable oil which you would think would be OK but it's not, you would want to use mineral oil because vegetable oil goes rancid where mineral oil does not.
I thought it was a great idea. Good way to make some custom shaped scraping tools. If you're not comfortable pushing the limits with your tools, you're not doing it right. ;)
earzcd I totally agree. However, I would have kept my thumb a little further back. If the blade happened to spin in the pliers the way he was using it in this video it would have been a trip to get some sutures.
You can make nice lathe tools for detailing from old spade bits. But I'm careful with bits wider than about 3/4 to 1 inch because of the thin 1/4" -5/16" shank.
Cool spoon/dipper. Could a pair of identical spoons be made on the lathe in one piece? A ball and handle cut in half, then scooped out. Of course it can, you can do anything, I only make a mess. I have lots of ideas but not the talent you have.
That spoon almost looks like a ladle. In fact a scoop of that spoon into some batter would make for perfect mini-pancakes! MMMmm... Maple syrup and buttery pancakes... Gotta go!
jimmydiresta Great looking spoon, and a razor bade scraper! Whoa!
Finally wood turning!!!! well done DiResta.
Love it. I've been sort of bored with my lathe for a while. This has stirred up some new ideas. Thanks for always inspiring, Brother.
Another great little project love all of Jimmy's uploads
Spoon? That's a bowl on a stick! Man imagine eating soup with that!!! Awesome work Jimmy!
Oh I need a lathe. That looks so good. Nice work Jimmy.
Excellent Spoon Jimmy...!!!
Greetings from Argentine.! Steve.
New to turning - love your videos.
dude that's so simple and so cool!!

flippin' fantastic.
amazing I will totally try this so inventive
Another amazing project. Anyone have any tips for making shopping and scrapping tools?
Nice

I've got to find some wood that doesn't come from a big box store to try some of these projects. Gorgeous.
love it!
Nice!

How the hell do you still have ten fingers?
i have 9 that work, the left pinky was severed and re attached in march of 2010 , Table saw accident.
jimmydiresta Your work on the band-saw as a crafting tool is impressive as hell. ...and scares the hell out me.
jimmydiresta My dad sawed off 3 of his fingers about 2 years ago, i barley remeber he acts as if it never happend...
jimmydiresta That always kind of confused my why you'd use the push lever on the table saw but free hand on the band saw. although, I guess there really isn't another way to do that...
10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain... And his logo everywhere so you can remember his name =)
diresta you are the one
I've never seen anyone do so much on a bandsaw besides cutting material. You could teach Yoda to become one with the tools!
Curti esse canal só por causa do Diresta.. =D
Awesome. I am going to try making a coffee scoop.
I am amazed by your works! a huge fan!...but a) that's what we call a ladle and b) yah, use mineral oil...then linseed, then even baby oil before vegi oil.
nice spoon! ps I like the rolex!
That's a real nice ladle.
nice work, do you cut the end of he handle, that appears inside the spoon?
is the glue food grade ? how does it react to heat and moisture?
can it be used in cooking (or at least serving) or is it for decoration only?
Beautiful work! Does anyone know the significance of the red bandana? He seems to always have one.....just curious..
+Sollym4 Obviously he's a Blood Yo
Bubinga is a beautiful wood.
"What's he talking about? That's a tiny bowl, not a sp... ooohhh, cooool"
Will the wood glue hold up in high temps?? I am looking to do this with handcarving, didnt know if that would be a problem.
For my woodworks, I use either the following finish:

ok qwat if the item is to be used with food wat then?
Good job
Good job. Soup taster?
Interesting type of wood, what kind is it?
Bubinga wood, it's in the description ;)
"...your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should."
Can you make a decorative Jack for purchase ?
Very cool
Wheres the diresta logo ? ;)
Its in the work itself watch closely :3
Evren Uçar Yeah ;) it is
With wat a mashine direste hole out the spoon?
I have some questions in the range of lathes, i would like to get a lathe to do metal and woodwork, is it fine to get a metalworkinglathe to handle wood aswell? And if yes can you tell me wich lathe is a good one ?
Beautiful work, yet again! Vegetable oil finish, though? Why not mineral oil?
well it is a spoon...you put that in food. I would think vegetable oil would be a little less cancerous. Apparently mineral oil is bad for you health.
Cheezus Vegetable oil will go rancid. Mineral oil is safe for human consumption (commonly sold as a laxative, actually) and will not go rancid.
***** Is olive oil ok for use?
***** yes people use it as a laxative but it doesn't mean it's healthy.
Bubinga is naturally resistant to rot and contains a high amount of natural oils, the vegetable oil would be more of a surface treatment after working to clean it up rather than a conditioner.
que le pone a la madera para que tenga esa terminación?
love the spoon, awesome and entertaining work as always, quick question i noticed, the brass plate around your bandsaw blade, did you make that, love brass and i picked up on it right away that it looked like a addition

I knew it. Diresta is a Blood.
+helsinki Straight outta Piru Street, Compton, CA. dawg!
Moi
so wonderful
Jim you do super work for a NY'er like me
I have a stupid question - can you actually use it? For hot stuff, for example - it will endure the hot and moist food? I'm not a woodworker, I'm just curious. And nice job nevertheless.
that was really a beautyfull piece of wood !! what type if you could tell?
as allways ,nice work!!
***** and its softer wood then this i guess
try reading the description........ Bubinga
Karl Liljeström oh , thanx !! i couldent get eny description even if i pressed on it or went back and forth to the link so i assumed it wasnt in! once again thanx!
Holy shit diresta is a blood
We all saw the bandana.
but but didnt he use it to clean up the oil "excess" ? so he has to be carefull where he is going ? Ö,.ö i mean he made it dirty on purpose... isnt that like burning it ? xD jks
Why do you use such a wide blade on the band saw for such tight radii? Wouldn't it be much easier and more precise to use a narrower blade for that?
Cancun771 For something being turned, precision isn't a must have as the lathe will take care of that. By the time the blade was changed and everything lined back up, you can have the cut done and being turning the piece.
Cool !!
I'm not a web video producer or nuthin' but a little Barry White during the oiling process would have really made this video shine.
How can I get one of theses spoons? I'm a chef and would treasure that forever! Help!!
make one
did I mention I was a chef, not a skilled laborer.....lol
+Chris Moxon find someone who owns a lathe and knows how to use it, then get them to build it
I always heard that vegetable oil is bad for sealing, because it goes rancid. anyone know for sure?
I must ask have you used the spoon you made in this recording?
какое дерево вы использовали?
Spoon or dipper?
Does vegetable oil not go rancid?
What type of stain did he use???
Looked like vegetable oil which you would think would be OK but it's not, you would want to use mineral oil because vegetable oil goes rancid where mineral oil does not.
A Laythedle?
DRINKING GAME: everytime you see the name diresta take a shot
i must ask; is the spoon safe to use because of the wood glue?
Emi Kat yes wood glue is non toxic
Thank you!
You should try making a pipe. That would be an interesting build.
I'll agree that ladles belong to a subset of spoons but I have some reservations using the word spoon to describe this object.
SilentS Well really a spoon is just a tiny bowl on a handle :D
great
we've got similiar things like that in indonesia, we called it "centong kayu"..
nice wood
Double power tool in 4:40 is nice, but project is more scoop than spoon :)
I want one.
would have made an awesome goblet at 2:30
Now make the giant cereal bowl to go with it!
Wood Ladel, MADE WITH LATHE!!! (And A Bunch Of Other Power Tools)
If you wanna go to the satisfying part, skip to 3:35!
I should really start to revise 😂😂
I've seen you do some funky stuff before, but I gotta admit the blade on the locking pliers had me sweating. Don't try this at home, kids!
I thought it was a great idea. Good way to make some custom shaped scraping tools. If you're not comfortable pushing the limits with your tools, you're not doing it right. ;)
I can't argue with that, it just seems dangerous is all.
earzcd I totally agree. However, I would have kept my thumb a little further back. If the blade happened to spin in the pliers the way he was using it in this video it would have been a trip to get some sutures.

Diresta could do a gandalf type pipe?
A little up angle on the handle would have given the bowl better lift dynamic. Looks like vegetable oil finish.
But titebond 2?
You didn't put your name on it. I was expecting the stencil and spray can at the end. ;-)
Отлично. А можешь сделать ложку из целого куска древесины. Чтобы не сверлить и клеить? Слабо?
That spoon almost looks like a ladle. In fact a scoop of that spoon into some batter would make for perfect mini-pancakes! MMMmm... Maple syrup and buttery pancakes... Gotta go!
You should make a wooden pipe next
Add some hand and legs.
Voila, it's called "Jaelangkung" haha
More like ladle on a lathe!
and where did you wrote DIRESTA on that spoon? haha but anyway, excelent job!
Cut a slot in the handle so that it can be hung from a hook.
Looks like a mini Stanley cup around 2:20
Nice:-)
He didn't put his name on it!
makes me want some chili
Классный черпак.
It would have made a nice goblet also...
sos un groso jimy- you are fuc...g awesome
So far I'm seeing a small bowl and a tiny baseball bat... Ohhhh
